There are certain fashion rules that have withstood the test of time, and not wearing white after Labor Day is right up there near the top--if not at the top. However, winter white is a fashion savvy way to bend this rule, and what fashionista doesn't like bending the rules a little bit? I know I do.

With that disclaimer in mind, this past Saturday afternoon found me at the nail salon for the very first time since my baby girl was born in November (don't do the math--let's just say that my nails were long overdue), given my dearest friend India's engagement party on the books for Saturday night. In standard practice for me, I was planning to wear all black--dress, opaque tights, and Tory Burch booties--so my nail color options were accordingly limitless, but I had a cheerful red in mind. Yet, as I examined the rows of polish, my eyes fell upon something totally different, totally unexpected for me: white.

My usual approach to nail color is threefold: (1) opt for something that really pops; (2) go with something dark and neutral since it will compliment virtually any outfit; or (3) when in doubt, go French. To pick something subtle and light--if not barely there--is not my typical style, especially during the dreary winter months. Still, I was stuck on Essie's Waltz. The Essie website calls Waltz an "elegant, sheer white," and it is precisely that. Having my manicurist apply three coats instead of two gave my nails a light, bright look that was refreshing amidst the dead of winter. Sans summer tan (usually the only thing that makes white an appealing nail color choice), Waltz still gave my fingers a pretty, feminine feel that was the perfect counter balance to my black outfit, though not competing with the blinged out ropes of pearls and rhinestones at my neck.

Don't get me wrong, I would never abandon my go-to punchy pinks and cheery reds, or the moody greys and blacks that I so love, but I suppose that sometimes less really is more--and as far as nail color is concerned, Waltz makes a compelling case for winter white. Brrrr.

Dearest fashionista friends, after what I considered a heroic feat of thirty posts in the thirty days of November, I confess I have been totally remiss in sharing my fabulous fashion adventures this past month! So, with the dawn of a new year upon us, I thought it would be best to finish out 2011 the right way, which means reflecting back on the year's fashions--some new, some old, but all fabulous. And not to be cute, but it seems appropriate to count down (in no particular order), n'est pas?

10... Barbour. Ahh, yes, the iconic British lifestyle brand. It is also a brand that I grew up with. My beloved Daddy, the king of cool, even had his own Barbour that he beat up over the years--but it only made it that much cooler and more iconic. Yet, I've never had a Barbour of my own. The injustice of it all! But what I do have is the most amazing husband in the world, and this Christmas he gave me a Barbour of my very own. Yay for staying warm in fabulously British style this year!

9... Lulu. Despite some bad press lately, I remain faithful to Lululemon and their amazing collection of yoga and running clothes that can be worn for both exercise and play. In fact, their apparel is so versatile that I was able to wear my regular old Lulu all the way through my pregnancy, thanks the seemingly magical stretchy properties of their signature luon fabric. Not to mention that one of my favorite styles, the Groove Pant, is available with a tall inseam. They don't call it "the Holy Grail of yoga pants" for nothing.

8... Lollipop. This summer, Essie's Lollipop was my go-to nail color. For a bright, cheerful red, nothing beats it. While on vacation in the Outer Banks this summer with my husband's family, even my 10 year-old niece remarked on what a perfect shade of red it was. Of course, she is absolutely a fashionista-in-the-making, but still. When it's right, it's right. And on the upside, since it's winter now, I think Lollipop could qualify as a "candy cane red." I know Christmas has come and gone, but you get what I'm saying.

7... Cupcakes and Cashmere. I came upon this blog quite by accident earlier this year, while doing a Google image search for the Fairfax Catseye sunglasses by Elizabeth and James that I was so coveting--and what a happy accident indeed. I have returned regularly to read about Emily's fashion and lifestyle inspirations, which include absolutely gorgeous photos taken by her and her fiancé. It is now one of my favorite sites when I want to be inspired, or sometimes insanely jealous (this girl has fashion in spades). To sum it up, I want to be like Emily when I grow up.

6... Alex and Ani. I received an Alex and Ani bangle as a birthday gift from my lovely and stylish friend, Sandrine, this summer--and I have been a convert ever since. Their bangles and other jewelry are designed with the intention of of celebrating each wearer's unique essence. My silver bangle features a single turquoise bead, which is said to promote peace of mind, as a symbol of generosity, sincerity, and affection. Harnessing positive energy through clean and simple design is definitely something I will continue to embrace in the new year.

5... Maxi Skirts. This year brought the return of maxi skirts were all the rage, which was a true fashion gift for a tall girl like me. During the summer, I embraced the white, gauzy boho chic look, which brought an elegance and sophistication to my summer wardrobe--while also allowing me to stay cool in spite of a growing baby bump. Then, with the transition to fall, I was excited to see that the maxi transitioned as well, with heavier knits taking the place of light, bright cottons. In fact, during the month of October, I basically lived in my striped jersey maxi skirt from Anthroplogie, and I am happy to report that it will continue to serve me well throughout the winter.

4... Nymphette. Now now, don't get the wrong idea. Another cosmetic hit from MAC, their Nymphette Tinted Lipglass (not to be confused with lipgloss) was definitely one of my new favorite beauty products this year. Nymphette, which MAC calls a "sunny golden pink," adds a subtle golden glow to your lips that infuses your overall cosmetic look. Regardless of your coloring, this girly neutral lip color is definitely one that you want to add to your beauty arsenal.

3... The Brooklyn Flea Market. This past summer, while visiting my lovely and amazing friend, India, in New York, I had the opportunity to attend the Brooklyn Flea Market. While I always insist that I am "not a New York person" and "prefer to visit," this artsy outdoor market had me singing a different tune. From the refreshments (corn on the cob and limeade has never tasted so good) to the artsy antique vendors (we were on a mission to find the perfect steamer trunk), I was reminded of Coco Chanel's sage wisdom: that fashion exists everywhere. If only I hadn't taken the bus to New York, I would have likely returned home with a lot of fabulous new furniture.

2... Double Rainbow. Well, only if you count both feet. They might not be footwear that Rachel Zoe would approve of, but sometimes a fashionista has to give her feet a break--and the zillion pairs of Rainbows I have owned over the year have never, ever let me down (and that counts for something, doesn't it?). At least for a while, they were more of a West Coast surfer phenomena, but perhaps because their simple and comfortable leather design is so ideal for summer, over time they have made their way across our great nation. And thank goodness for that. So, not only are Rainbows a 2011 fashion favorite, but they have been a favorite of mine every year since I started wearing them during my college stint in LA--and I can say with surety that they will find their way onto a 2012 list of favorites too.

1... CHANEL. Every fashionista has to have that one special item on her "most coveted" list, and the Chanel Grand Shopper is mine. With its luxe quilted black leather, chain link strap, and Chanel logo, it is the epitome of elegance and class. But, like most items that end up on a "most coveted" list, its price point puts it outside the realm of possibility (for this fashionista at least). But perhaps that is what makes it so special, that it isn't yet tangible for me, which gives me something to work towards; you know, life, liberty, and the pursuit of Chanel. And I know that someday I will walk into the Chanel boutique on Newbury Street and leave with this gorgeous handbag, but until then, it remains the best thing that's never been mine.

I Am Thankful For My Fashionista Friends Episode 30: Be Inspired

As you know, I dedicated She's Come Unheeled posts during the month of November to the spirit of thanksgiving and the people, places, and things that have inspired my gratitude--not to mention my fashion sensibilities. With all that's happened in my life lately, this 30-day pledge has been a challenge at times, but I feel fortunate to have had the specific opportunity to reflect on what I'm thankful for--and it's hard to believe that it's already the 30th! Given that today is the last official post (which is not to say that I won't share my gratitude in the future), it feels appropriate to give thanks for fashion in general, especially the DOs and DON'Ts that keep a self-proclaimed fashionista on her toes.

Yesterday, while my baby slept, I left the NICU to grab some lunch. Feeling lethargic as I trudged back to the hospital, a fellow pedestrian caught my eye: a man carrying a briefcase and wearing work pants and oxfords, paired with a purple hoodie and sleeveless denim vest. Unfortunately, I only saw this ensemble from the back and regret that I didn't think to stealthily snap a photo with my iPhone, but still I had to laugh--and I needed to laugh. It didn't take a fashionista to recognize what was amiss with that outfit: everything. Yet, I am thankful for fashion DON'Ts like this one to add a little comic relief to my day and to serve as a reminder of, while beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, there are some fashion rules that should not be broken.

Just as fashion DON'Ts crop up in the most unexpected places, fashion DOs can appear just as randomly. Today, while walking to the elevator (again to grab some lunch--I sense a pattern here), I passed a fellow NICU mom in the hallway, looking like the portrait of chic in the hospital corridor. Her outfit was simple but elegant: black leggings, a white tunic-length tee with a cozy sweater and...nude patent leather flats. Now, I've already professed my love for my nude pumps, but I never even considered nude flats. They have the same versatility as nude pumps, yet by nature of being a flat, they are inherently more casual. Still, they add a level of style and grace that is to be coveted. Simply put: I need to get a pair of my own, and I am thankful for the fact that fashion inspiration can strike at any time, in any place.

As Coco Chanel once said, Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening. In the past month, as I have kept myself especially open to inspiration, I have found this to be more true than ever before. Whether it's a DO or DON'T, a hot trend or a classic, fashion is absolutely everywhere--and I am thankful to be able to soak in it, to experiment with new ideas, and to be inspired by the fashion of others. And on that note, dearest fashionista friends, I am thankful for each of you and your unceasing fashion savvy. November will soon be over, but I'm already looking forward to holiday fashion... Just saying!

Episode 29: Because Momma Knows

Just a couple of days ago, I shared my gratitude for comfy dress up: J. Crew's Saturday Pants. After finishing up my post, I had every intention of ordering them too, but then it was time to feed baby Harper--and so the pants remained in my online shopping cart, patiently waiting to be purchased. Then this morning, with loads of laundry still undone, I wished I had ordered them and added overnight shipping (sigh). But all is never lost. Today I am thankful, once again, to my mother, who just knew--and showed up at my house at 7:00 AM with more gifts for baby...and a pair of Saturday Pants for me.

Now that I actually own these pants, I can say with absolute certainty that they are the greatest gift to comfy chic ever. They have the form of leggings, but the jaspé cotton is thick enough to push them solidly into the "pants" category. I'm wearing mine today with Uggs, a long tunic, and my favorite Lulu Lemon hoodie, and I couldn't be more comfortable if I tried. My mother selected the "heather midnight" (black, with a subtle heather effect), and it's perfect for a girl like me who generally prefers black. But these pants are actually SO fabulous that I want a pair in every color. Maybe Santa will take the hint, but in the meantime, a million thanks to my mother and her mother's intuition.

Episode 28: Creme de Corps

Despite the unseasonably balmy weather in Boston these days, the icy days of winter are just around the corner. But I suppose that's fair, given that December is just a few days away--and with it comes the constant hand-washing of cold and flu season (so not hot). Between the weather and the seasonal elements, your skin can take a beating, and with that in mind, I've been giving a lot of thought to preventative measures. Which is why I am thankful for Kiehl's Creme de Corps.

Indeed, I am such a fan of this amazing lotion that I keep the ginormous 1-liter size on the vanity in my bathroom. If you've ever tried Creme de Corps, you know why. Rich in nutrients including beta-carotene, cocoa butter, and sesame oil, this iconic body cream is designed with all-day hydration in mind. For best moisturizing results, Kiehl's recommends using it immediately after the shower. But regardless of your timing, I can assure you that you'll love the results. Soft skin is something we can all be thankful for this winter.

Due to recent events, my wardrobe this week has been rather limited. In fact, I have made somewhat of a uniform out of sweatpants, Uggs, hoodies, and drapey scarves--and I have never been so thankful for comfy clothes. Then, today my sister told me about the amazing pants she discovered--of all places, while viewing Breaking Dawn Part 1 this past weekend (apparently, Bella/Kristen Stewart rocks them as part of her pregnancy look, which seems appropriate). So today I am thankful for this much-needed tip from my sister, and for the fact that it is now possible for comfy to dress up.

I Am Thankful For My Fashionista Friends, Episodes 21-26: Things I Love

Dearest fashionista friends, I hope you all had a marvelous Thanksgiving and were able to celebrate all the things in your life that you have to be thankful for! Over the past 20 posts, I have shared some of the fashion, beauty, and lifestyle inspirations that I am grateful for. However, nothing compares to the blessing that my husband and I received when we welcomed our little girl, Harper Livingston, one week ago today. Born at just over 36 weeks, Harper has spent the first week of her life in the NICU at Beth Israel hospital in Boston to gather her strength before she can return home with us. I am eternally thankful for the precious gift of our sweet baby girl, and for all the people that have supported, encouraged, and lifted us up over the past week. There is nothing more fashionable than an outpouring of love.

So, while I was able to get a post in after Harper was born last Saturday, I have since neglected my pledge of 30 posts of gratitude throughout the month of November. I know you understand. But as my mother says, better late than never--so allow me to share a condensed version of the people and things I have been specifically thankful for (some huge and perhaps obvious, others small and simple) over these last few days...

#21: I am thankful for...my iPhone. Seriously. Dallin and I have observed several pay phones throughout the hospital corridors, and I have wondered if I could even figure out how to use a pay phone anymore? I mean, I certainly don't know how much it costs to make a call these days; the last time I used a pay phone, my age ended in "teen," and the going rate was 35 cents. Indeed, my iPhone has proved to be worth its weight in gold these days (and as a portfolio analyst, I can safely assure you that gold is all the rage). It has kept us connected to family and friends, while also serving as a handy camera, an alarm clock, and the source of countless games. I have to thank my awesome friend and coworker, Joe, who encouraged me to take the iPhone plunge when my beloved Blackberry finally died, for I am truly thankful for this little piece of absolutely crucial technology--in its irresistible Kate Spade polka dot case.

#22: I am thankful for...my fabulous friends and family. Obvi! Over these last days, Dallin, Harper, and I have received so much love from the amazing people that we are lucky enough to call family and friends. From visits with friends bearing emergency cases of ginger ale; to quality time with family and an extremely eager new grandmother; to countless emails and texts; to Thanksgiving treats brought all the way to the hospital, the word "thankful" doesn't actually do justice to how I feel about the loving kindness we have received. #23: I am thankful for...the healing powers of make up. Truly, I don't mean this in a shallow or superficial way. When I was discharged from the hospital on Thursday, Dallin and I had to face the incredibly difficult obstacle of returning home--without our baby girl. I'm not going to say that I handled this situation with poise and grace; rather, I spent most of Wednesday in tears of anticipation. But on Thursday, as we gathered our things, I decided that I needed to ready myself to face the world--and that falling apart wasn't going to do me (or anyone else) any good. In an effort to pull it together, I straightened my hair, brushed on some of my favorite Trish McEvoy bronzer, added a little Chanel eyeliner, and brought out the big guns with my waterproof tube of DiorShow mascara. I had to laugh when our nurse remarked on how much "better" I looked that day; clearly, I'm not a natural beauty. But sometimes just putting in the effort can help, and I am grateful for these cosmetic staples for making me look--if not feel--like a normal human being again. The rest will hopefully come with the healing powers of time.

#24: I am thankful for...my amazing husband. In the five plus years we have been married, Dallin has proved himself time and time again to be the best companion a self-proclaimed fashionista like me could have possibly asked for in life. He just knows. When he left the hospital briefly on Monday night to go home and grab some work clothes for the next day, he returned with (among other things) my cashmere socks and the newest issue of Us Weekly. On Wednesday, when I was on the verge of falling apart, he helped me on a walk outside to get some air and try to clear my head, no matter that I was wearing my Juicy velour PJ pants and Ugg slippers. These small acts of selflessness--not to mention every time I see him cuddling with or feeding our baby daughter--remind me of how thankful I am to be blessed with Dallin as an eternal companion. I know Harper will be equally thankful for her daddy.

#25: I am thankful for...my Lulu Lemon yoga bag. Since I was discharged from the hospital, DallinDallin's iPad, and all the normal stuff into my Burberry tote was going to result in broken handbag straps (for the third time). So we turned to the amazing Lulu Lemon yoga bag that my amazing sister, Annie, and her equally amazing boyfriend, Gil, got me for my birthday in August. Its size is big enough to fit everything we need for a day at the hospital, and it comes equipped with dozens of handy pockets and zipped compartments to stay organized. When life gets crazy, sometimes it is the simple things for which you can be thankful. I may not be toting the bag to and from yoga for a while, but that doesn't mean I can't feel a sense of peace.

#26: I am thankful for...the joy of motherhood. When we lost our baby boy, Rex Fish, last October, I had never felt such complete and utter devastation and feared that I would never have the opportunity to enjoy the blessing of a living child. While Harper is currently facing the challenges of being born early, I am thankful for the gift of her life and for the opportunity I have to be a mother. She is precious, sweet, and even a little bit feisty at times, and I look forward to watching her grow and mature with each passing day--and hope for the day that we can bring her home with us.

Dear fashionista friends, it's hard to believe that we are quickly approaching the end of November, and though my blog pledge (of 30 posts in the spirit of thanks) has been a tall order at times, I am thankful to have had the opportunity to reflect on the people, places, and things that have inspired my gratitude. While today I have condensed the last six days into one post, believe me when I tell you that I could have written volumes about the love and support my little family has received during that time. So thank you again to those who have made my burdens light--and to the little fashion tricks that have helped me make it with just a little bit of style too.

Episode 20: Family & Armo(u)r

Today I am thankful for my amazing family, who never fail to support and encourage me--especially (and most recently) over the last 36 weeks and 4 days... For me, my family is my armor, and they keep me strong. So it was only fitting that, when my brother, Ben, came to visit me in the hospital today (well, I think he was more interested in his brand new niece--but still), I was immediately impressed by his super fly kicks.

It turns out that the sneakers in question are Under Armour footwear. While I enjoy working out--particularly running and yoga--I actually don't own a single piece of Under Armour. I'm more of a Lulu Lemon or Nike sort of girl. But my brother's awesome sneakers may have me changing my tune. Their sleek design and bold color accents are precisely the features I look for in a sneaker.

Since my amazing new daughter, Harper, has me a bit preoccupied at the moment (yay!), I only had the chance to spend a few minutes perusing Under Armour's website, but I was instantly drawn to the Women's Charge RC Running Shoe. According to Under Armour, these shoes are game changers, given their two-piece body, designed so that your foot can flex like it does naturally, while compression protects your muscles so as to maximize their strength and slow fatigue. All this plus moisture-wicking fabric and a weight of less than 10 ounces? I'm certainly impressed. Yet, for me, fashion is obviously a crucial component, and these sneakers are equally impressive in this regard; available as a limited edition is a dazzling pink and cool aqua contrasting a graphite colored body. Girly and edgy: my favorite.

I have to tell you, my brother is definitely the source when it comes to fantastic footwear. While he is absolutely obsessed with working out, he does it in style, so who am I to judge? Especially after he has shared this fabulous footwear secret with me. For that--and for him and the rest of my amazing family--I am thankful.

Episode 19: In the Trench

I am absolutely in love with my trench coat. In fact, it was one of the highlights of my 25th birthday. As a long time Burberry addict, the classic trench had been on my wish list for basically all 25 years leading up to this pivotal, quarter-century birthday. Still, I couldn't have been more surprised--or thankful--when my family brought in the most enormous Burberry shopping bag I had ever seen, containing this iconic fashion staple.

A few years later, I remain thankful for such a generous, indulgent, and amazing gift. In many ways, my Burberry trench is like armor; somehow, it always makes me feel put together and presentable. So today--and everyday--I am thankful to beloved family for always spoiling me and for the timeless elegance of a trench that helps me brave even the dreariest of days in style.

Episode 18: I Am Thankful For All Things Nautical

I woke up before my alarm this morning and, not being able to get back to sleep, I found myself with a bit of extra time on my hands and decided to check my email. I was happy to discover a TGIF message from my adorable sister, containing a valuable fashion tip from our dear friend Rian: The Daily Prep, a fabulously preppy blog. The most recent post featured these amazing rope bracelets by Lemon & Line that appealed to my love of all things nautical--and now I'm a bit obsessed. So today, not only am I thankful for the lovely Rian, but I am also thankful for the inside scoop on this fun new nautical fashion.

A couple of years ago, after making a wish and blowing out my birthday candles, I opened a gift from my sister to discover the source of infinitely more wishes: a silver wishbone necklace. There are a handful of things that we wish on: shooting stars, dandelions, birthday candles... But to me, there is nothing more symbolic than a wishbone. I have faithfully worn my wishbone necklace practically everyday since; as I've said before, sometimes even the most spirited of fashionistas needs a little extra boost, and I am thankful for the daily reminder that my wishes will one day come true.

Over the last couple of years, I have encountered some bumps in the road--bumps that might be more appropriately classified as potholes or even craters... Still, I continue to wish, with the hope that each passing day will bring my wishes a little bit closer. Burberry has been a fixture in my life for as long as I can remember. As a child, as soon as the cold weather swept through Boston, I can still recall my style savvy grandfather bundling up with a bit of signature plaid around his neck. Yet, it wasn't until years later that I was able to recognize Burberry's timeless style and wanted some pretty plaid of my own. I finally scored my own Burberry scarf in my later teenage years, and I have been thankful for Burberry plaid ever since.

Sometimes I feel like no one can do proper or timeless quite like the British, and Burberry is absolutely evidence of this fact. While I held on to my original Burberry scarf for years, a couple of Christmases ago, my beloved Daddy gifted me a new scarf, and so I traded in my old stand-by for Burberry's Giant Check Cashmere Scarf. I am absolutely mad for the camel toned nova plaid; I mean, does it get more classic? Plus, the oversized check pattern of this scarf adds a contemporary spin, and because it's cashmere, it is soft soft soft like you wouldn't believe.

Not only is it a winter staple, but on a more personal note, while I would have forever treasured my scarf anyway, that was my Daddy's last Christmas so my scarf's sentimental value makes it even more important to me. So not only am I thankful for the gift of plaid and its timeless elegance, but I am grateful for the reminder of my amazing father, his generosity, and--of course- his eye for style.

Episode 15: Dry Shampoo Saves the Day

Most days, I feel like there just aren't enough hours in the day. I'm constantly dashing from one place to the next, while trying to squeeze in errands, exercise, quality time with the people I love--and the list goes on. Fortunately, there are a few fashion and beauty tricks to make life a little bit easier for the gal on the go, which is precisely why I am so thankful for dry shampoo.

If you don't have enough time for the full shower, shampoo, blow dry, and/or straighten routine, this amazing dry shampoo allows any fashionista who finds herself in a bit of a time crunch to cheat a little. All it takes is a quick spritz, and ingredients such as gentle starches absorb excess oil and product build-up, while vitamin E and wheat proteins strengthen and protect the hair shaft. Don't get me wrong--nothing beats the refreshing feeling of freshly washed hair, but like I said, sometimes there just aren't enough hours in the day to do it all. Without a doubt, butter London is one of my favorite nail polish companies. Not only is it fabulously British, but the colors are splendidly unique--and always well named. To me, the name counts, and I'll admit to being sold on one nail lacquer over another simply on the basis of a cool name. In fact, naming the colors of cosmetics would be my dream job (anyone hiring?). So I was pretty excited when my amazing friend, Annie Rose, gave me a bottle of butter London's Wallis lacquer for my birthday a couple of months ago--and I am thankful for the surprising opportunity it provided for me to learn about the namesake of this fabulous color.

I had read a while back that Wallis was all the rage during London Fashion Week--and one look tells you why. I have yet to see a color quite like this one, and that's really saying something because I get my nails done a lot. Back in the summer, I was all about gold glitter polish on my toes, but Wallis is more than basic gold. Rather, to steal the words straight from butter's website, Wallis is a tarnished metallic olive gold that heralds from butter's Fall/Winter 2011 collection. According to butter's Founding Creative Director and color trend expert Nonie Creme, the collection as a whole was designed to “reflect the 'luxe-grunge' moment, and burst of new era, ‘dirty’ jewel tones prevalent on the catwalk for Autumn/Winter 2011.” Indeed, there is a certain rich darkness to Wallis that makes it sophisticated yet irreverent--and I absolutely love it.

The butter website's description of Wallis adds that the color is as mysterious and regal as its namesake. This got me thinking, what namesake? Not being a Brit myself (shame--I would love the accent), I thought that maybe there was some trendy royal that I didn't know about. After some investigation, it turns out that there's a good story behind the name of this amazing nail lacquer, and I'm so thankful that a nail polish--of all things--pushed me towards a juicy little history lesson. It also turns out that my original suspicions weren't totally off the mark...

Born Bessie Wallis Warfield in 1896, Wallis was was an American socialite whose life story reads practically like an episode of Gossip Girl--though I venture to say that the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite have got nothing on Wallis. Her first marriage to US naval officer, Earl Winfield Spencer, Jr. ended in divorce, though she soon married again. It was during her second marriage, to shipping executive Ernest Aldrich Simpson, that Wallis was rumored to have become the mistress to Edward, Prince of Wales. It wasn't until two years later, after Edward's ascension to the throne as King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom and the Dominions, that Wallis divorced her second husband--and Edward proposed to her.

Of course, Wallis's checkered marital past was a red flag for those proper Brits; that is to say, the King's intention to wed a woman with two living ex-husbands threatened to cause a constitutional crisis in the United Kingdom and the Dominions, and so lucky husband number three ultimately abdicated the throne to be with his lady love. Following the abdication, the former king was titled Duke of Windsor by his brother George VI, and after their marriage, Wallis was formally known as the Duchess of Windsor (not quite the same ring as "Her Royal Highness"--but still). And then they lived happily ever after. Okay, maybe not--but they did hop back and forth across the pond, living the high life as society celebrities, surrounded by controversy and intrigue. If US Weekly had been around then, I'm sure they would have covered the story.

I never thought I'd learn all that from a bottle of nail polish, but knowing what I know now, the glittery darkness of butter's Wallis lacquer seems totally befitting its namesake. So thank you, dear Annie Rose, for my amazing nail color--and for the opportunity to learn a thing or two about history and scandal. Love it.

Episode 12: Boston Fashion

Today I had the opportunity to spend the afternoon on Newbury Street with my sister, Annie, getting a head start on our holiday shopping. In addition to our favorite spots, we took the opportunity to pop into stores that we had never been to before, sometimes with our own wardrobes in mind and other times in search of a Christmas gift or two. It was such an amazing day that I was reminded of how much I love my home city of Boston--and how thankful I am to have been able to enjoy it in such good company.

Boston may not be known as a landmark on the fashion scene, yet I am constantly inspired by the people who surround me, even the people I see on the street. Today, Annie and I saw both fashion dos and don'ts. Perhaps my favorite "do" was a casual fall layered look, a girl wearing army green leg warmers over her black leggings and tucked into her brown boots. While her look wasn't anything earth shattering, the comfortable ease of the layers struck me as a fun way to incorporate color and texture in an everyday outfit.

On the other hand, the most notable "don't" was a girl wearing a faux fur jacket that redefined the word "oversized," dwarfing her tiny frame so much that she looked as though was drowning. I believe she was probably channeling that bohemian Mary Kate Olsen vibe, but the thing about that is that you actually have to be Mary Kate Olsen to make it work (and even she ends up on the "Fashion Police" page of US Weekly sometimes).

As and aside, amongst the dos and don't, this was indeed a triumphant day; my lovely, flat-shoes-only sister purchased her very first pair of heels--or wedges, to be more exact. Her new Tory Burch wedges fall solidly into the "do" category, and as a lover of the highest high heels, I was proud to be a part of the buying experience--and thankful to have had the opportunity to spend the prettiest fall day with my sister in our favorite (and ever fashionable) city.

Episode 11: Best Mascara Ever

Ever since I started wearing make up, mascara has been a staple for me. While my general cosmetic look is on the subtle side, I've never been one to skimp on eye make up--and especially mascara (much to my mother's chagrin, as my adolescent mascara removing efforts often resulted in stained face towels). It is perhaps for this reason that I've devoted so many past posts to my search for the latest and greatest mascara. I have found that sometimes even the most spirited of fashionistas needs a little extra boost. I am fortunate to have amazing friends and family to support and encourage me in a number of ways, and as you have likely already noticed, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I am dedicating this month's posts to the people, places, and things that I am thankful for--and the ways in which they have inspired me. Today I am thankful for one such inspired friend, who gifted me a set of mala beads for my birthday two years ago, and I am thankful to the lovely Jo for bringing me love and light in a new form.

For those unfamiliar, mala is a Sanskrit word meaning "garland." Mala beads are a string of beads used as far back as ancient times to keep the mind focused on the practice of meditation. They are commonly used by Hindus and Buddhists, and the beads can be made from a variety of materials--each with a specific energetic effect.

I am neither Hindu nor Buddhist, yet I treasure both sets of mala beads that I have--one made out of lotus seeds and the other out of moonstone--and I find the meaning behind their materials to be especially inspiring. The former was given to me by Jo, and the lotus seed is said to signify growth and the ability to overcome obstacles. I purchased my moonstone mala earlier this year, after embarking on a 30-day yoga challenge and feeling like I needed the good luck and soothing, balancing properties associated with the moonstone.

As I said earlier, sometimes even the most spirited of fashionistas needs a little extra boost. While the beads in and of themselves are beautiful, when I wear my mala beads around my wrist, I feel inspired to push a little harder, to keep my head up, and to keep moving forward. I am thankful for their inspiration, and for my lovely friend Jo for introducing me to a fashion that is so much more than a fashion.

Episode 9: I Want to Be Like Jackie Onassis

Of all the style icons that exist, Jackie Onassis has probably been the most influential for me. When I was fourteen years old, after finally getting my very first pair of contacts, my mother took me shopping for a celebratory pair of (non-prescription) sunglasses. After a rather exhaustive search, she helped me decide on a pair by Roxie that were aptly named the "Jackie O." I remember my mother explaining to me that it didn't get more elegant than Jackie, and that big, black sunglasses were definitely the way to go. While I have my mother to thank for bestowing this style savvy sage wisdom upon me, I am also especially thankful for Jackie Onassis and her dark sunglasses.

Since then, I've upgraded from my original pair of Roxie glasses. Several times, in fact. Over the years, I've gone from Roxie to Calvin Klein, to Chanel, to Burberry, and to Chloé--holding on to each pair for years and years until a transition is warranted. With each switch, my sunglasses have gotten a little bit bigger and a little bit darker. After all, it worked for Jackie, so why not me? I purchased my current pair, the Chloé Myrte, during an epic New York shopping excursion at Saks with some of my besties, Annie Rose and India, and four years later, I'm starting to think an upgrade from here might be impossible. It's mostly a question of frame size, as I have to wonder, does something bigger even exist? Perhaps I have found my signature look, and now I need to buy up a lifetime supply of Myrtes so that I'll never have to go without...

Whatever the case, oversized sunglasses are definitely my thing--a look that I have absolutely and completely borrowed from the original source, Jackie herself--and now I just don't feel like myself without them. A couple of years ago, a dear coworker shared an amazing song with me, called "Jackie Onassis" by the band Human Sexual Response. The opening lines pretty much say it all: I want to be like Jackie Onassis/I want to wear a pair of dark sunglasses. So thank you, Jackie, for representing all that was and is elegant, timeless, and true--and for immortalizing a look that I've taken as my own.

Episode 8: Comfy Cool

My sister Annie's closet has been an ongoing source of inspiration to me over the years. From skinny jeans to pointy-toed shoes, I am thankful to my style savvy sister for giving me the courage to test drive countless looks that I never thought would work for me, including the very epitome of comfy cool: my Converse.

Back when she was in high school, my sister debuted an irresistibly cute pair of bright pink Converse high tops. Peeking out from beneath skinny jeans, her girly kicks brought an element of casual fun to her look. While I totally coveted her style, I was convinced that such a look wouldn't work as well without her supermodel height and frame. But she talked me into giving it a try, and I found my own take on comfy cool by pairing my Converse with flairs. I have yet to add a pair of hot pink Converse to my collection, but I am currently pondering my next pair... Indeed, all these years later, I still love love looove my Converse. I guess it just goes to show that comfort is always in style. Dear beloved sister, my feet are especially thankful.

I Am Thankful For My Fashionista Friends, Episode 7: Pretty In Pearls

Over the years and throughout many a fashion adventure, I have come to appreciate the value of accessories. In fact, sometimes it is an accessory that makes an outfit, for even the most basic look can be instantly transformed by the right necklace, bracelet, or ring. For me, pearls are the best example of this fashion rule, a lesson that I have learned from my amazing grandmother. Regardless of the occasion, my grandmother's inherent elegance is only heightened by the strand of pearls she wears at her neck, and I am thankful to her for being a shining example of style and grace.

Shockingly, I never owned a strand of pearls of my own until shortly before I was married, when my mother gifted me a necklace and earring set as my "something new." The necklace just so happened to be precisely what I needed to complete my country chic bridal look. Since then, that necklace has become an accessory staple, and I often rely on it to complete my look. For my 9 to 5, I wear a lot of black (I am not a morning person so it's just easier that way), but the right heels and a strand of pearls give head-to-toe black an elegance that even Coco Chanel could (and did) approve of.

The same applies for when you're running short on time. As you may recall, one of my dear friends shared the following important fashion "do" for She's Come Unheeled's second birthday post earlier this year: # 40) Opt for pearls and a ponytail if you simply don't have time for a shower. Indeed, the power of pearls is their ability to transcend and transform. Whether the situation arises when you're pressed for time; your luscious locks are in need of a wash; you're feeling generally blah; or you're craving a bit of timeless elegance in your look, a strand of pearls is all a girl really needs in a pinch. In my humble opinion, this is more than just a rule of fashion; rather, it's a life lesson that I am thankful to my grandmother for teaching me by example.

Episode 6: Jeans For Dress-Up

When I was growing up, there was a distinct separation between casual clothes and dress-up clothes. Dress-up clothes were for church, parties, airplanes (remember those days?), and weddings or funerals, whereas casual clothes were for pretty much all other occasions. This separation was just as important as cardinal fashion rules like wearing a slip under a skirt or no white after labor day. In fact, even into my angsty teenage years, I pretty much subscribed to this wardrobe dichotomy. It wasn't until I moved to LA for college that my staunch New England fashion preconceptions loosened a bit, and I discovered there was an entire style spectrum in between casual and dress-up. During my four year stint in the City of Angels, I learned a lot about fashion--not to mention, life in general--but perhaps the most important fashion message was that you can (and should) wear jeans for dress-up, and it is for this revelation that I will be eternally thankful to my one-time home of LA.

Some ponder important life questions like: what came first, the chicken or the egg? As for me, I wonder whether jeans for dress-up inspired the designer denim fad (a trend that is happily alive and well today) or if the designer denim fad made it okay to wear denim to dinner and a movie? Regardless, I learned about both during my undergraduate years, and my wardrobe has never been the same. I hoard designer denim like, well, a hoarder--and there have even been times when my husband has had to set some harsh limits for me, like no more jeans until I get rid of some that I already have (sigh). But I digress...

The beauty of jeans for dress-up is that they are as stylish as they are comfortable, and when I'm wearing my favorite denim, I never feel more like myself--which is precisely how any girl wants to feel, regardless of the occasion. Interestingly enough, denim has a spectrum in and of itself. That is to say, there are some pairs of jeans that I reserve for casual wear and others that are more appropriate for going out. The difference between the two, of course, is further reinforced by footwear choice: Uggs or heeled leather boots, Converse or Louboutins, flip flops or flats, and so on.

But don't get me wrong. Now that I'm all grown up, I love playing dress-up just as much--if not more--than I did when I was a little girl. But with the exception of church, the really fancy occasions are few and far between, and the occasions that call for just a little something special are far more frequent. And this is how I rationalize all the jeans that I already own--and all that I still want to buy... So thank you, LA LA Land, for teaching me about casual couture and the absolute necessity of jeans for dress-up. My fashion sensibilities will be forever indebted.

Like many little girls, when I was growing up, I love love loved using my mother's make-up, applying her Guerlain bronzer and Lancôme eyeliner like a pro (or so I thought). Along with other important life lessons, I am thankful to my mother for teaching me about the joys of make-up and the importance of the "less is more" philosophy. But of all the fabulous, fancy products and cosmetic secrets I have inherited from my her, perhaps the most important is the secret to a flawless face.

Chanel's Correcteur Perfection Long Lasting Concealer might very well be the most crucial product in my make-up bag. The creamy, gel-based concealer is lightweight and easy to apply, yet it stays in place all day, flawlessly covering any imperfections. Since I hate to look overly "made up," the lightweight formula is what I love most about this concealer. I'm all about accessories, but I have to admit that sometimes function takes precedent over fashion. For example, the two black hair elastics that I wear on my right wrist everyday aren't really a fashion statement, though maybe I should claim them as my "signature look." Rather, I keep them on stand-by for the million occasions I encounter during the day when I need to get my crazy long hair out of my face and get down to business. Then, when my fabulous friend, Annie Rose, flew in from Seattle for a fun weekend visit last month, I learned that there are some hair ties out there that give function and fashion an equal opportunity. These are not your ordinary hair ties--and for this (and a laundry list of other reasons) I am thankful to the lovely Annie Rose.

But perhaps the best part is that each hair tie resembles a knotted ribbon instead of your standard elastic band so you can wear it around your wrist for a boho bracelet look until it's time to put your hair up.

Episode 3: My Husband Tests the Meaning of Fashion

Coco Chanel said, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” Wise words indeed, but still, I often get caught up in the pages of my favorite catalogs, catchy window displays, runway looks, and impressive street style. Fortunately, behind many a fashionista there is a supportive husband--and in my case, an adorable and style savvy one at that.

I am thankful to my partner in crime, Dallin, for helping me keep my trend goggles on and to examine fashion in new and exciting ways. On any given day, Dallin manages to discover the most interesting--and often shocking--fashion stories, and I often find links to these newsworthy stories in my email inbox.

In fact, about a month ago, I was introduced to designer Miguel Caballero's line of bulletproof fashion. I kid you not. Apparently, Caballero first developed this concept in his native Colombia, where his wealthy clientele required protection from drug cartel hit men, but didn't like the bulky look of bulletproof vests. Now that is what you can a design challenge. Then, two years ago, the designer saw a market opportunity in the increase in gun violence in the US and took his work state-side. He has since created bulletproof gear for celebrities like Diddy, the Wu Tang Clan, and Steven Seagal. His looks include bulletproof trench coats, hoodies, polo shirts, and even dinner jackets. Perhaps this isn't exactly what Madame Chanel intended in her definition of fashion, but there is clearly--and perhaps sadly--a market opportunity for Caballero's protective vision.

While bulletproof style certainly pushes the boundaries of traditional fashion, I was even more surprised when Dallin shared an article on edible fashion with me earlier this week. Believe me when I say that this is not the stuff of a Project Runway challenge. Rather, The Fashion Food Exhibition at the Communication Museum in Berlin features the work of chef and food designer Roland Trettl, edible fashion made of pasta, fish skin, octopi and vegetables. In addition to a live exhibition, photographer and collaborator Helge Kirschberger also captured Trettl's creations on camera, and the images depict show-stopping designs like a head scarf made from the fatty membrane of a calf's stomach. Not exactly your typical runway look, but as Museum Director Lieselotte Kugler told the AFP, "The images are not salacious or pornographic but they are erotic and raise questions." Indeed, as unappetizing as this all sounds to me, Trettl's work certainly captured my attention (and sort of turned my stomach, if we're being honest).

While I won't be in the market for a bullet proof vest or a fish skin mask any time soon, I am grateful for these irreverent reminders of the meaning of fashion. And I am thankful to my amazing husband for discovering and sharing such fashion oddities with me, helping to push my fashion sensibilities and expand my horizons. But just so we're clear, if you're going to buy me a present, stick with Chanel instead of Caballero or Trettl, okay?

I Am Thankful For My Fashionista Friends, Episode 2: Why Palmer's Is the Best. Thing. Ever.

I am a lip gloss junkie. On any given day, there are at least three--if not more--tubes of lip product in my purse. Today, the zip pocket of my Burberry tote includes a Palmer's Cocoa Butter Swivel Stick, Smith's Rosebud Salve, MAC's Cremesheen Glass in Boy Bait, and Fresh's Sugar Plum. With these four options, I have my bases completely covered, as far as moisturizing, conditioning, and color go--but if I were stranded on a deserted island and could only take one with me, it's a total no-brainer: my Palmer's Swivel Stick would win every time.

I am thankful to my lovely friend, India, for sharing this vital beauty secret with me (well, that and about a million other reasons). Palmer's is nothing fancy. You can find it in the same aisle as the body wash and lotion at just about any drugstore, and the packaging is just about as simple as it gets too. But don't be fooled; what Palmer's lacks in frills, it makes up for in pure amazingness. The cocoa butter formula contained in the swivel stick that so closely resembles a glue stick (other people will remind you of this fact, should you apply your Palmer's in public) is the best thing you could possibly do for your lips. Your pretty pout will be shiny and moisturized almost instantly.

My beloved state of Massachusetts is a little confused about when exactly winter is supposed to start--what with snow in October and all--but since the official start of winter isn't that far off, chapped lips are a definite concern for many a fashionista. Not to worry, Palmer's has got you covered. While this swivel stick is actually intended for general "marks, blemishes, and rough, dry skin" (hence it's glue stick size?), I would suggest keeping your swivel stick reserved for your kisser. But if you're in need of general moisturizing, I would look to a bottle of lotion instead (of course, Palmer's has you covered there too.)

Happy November, fashionista friends! It's hard to believe that the end of the year is fast approaching, but as you may be able to judge from my recent lack of blog posts, life has been busy--and time is just flying by! That being said, November is here, and to me, that means Thanksgiving (yum!). So it is in the spirit of thanks that I have decided to devote the 30 days of November to express my gratitude to the family and friends who never fail to inspire my style and lift my spirits. And today is episode one...

Just this past weekend, Massachusetts was hit with a freak snowstorm, and since my husband and I stubbornly insist upon keeping the heat off until at least November, we sought refuge from winter's early arrival with our coziest clothes, blankets, and hot chocolate. And of course, I turned to my Uggs.

I remember when Uggs first came into fashion during my college years, and I swore that they were the ugliest footwear ever. That is, until I returned home for the Christmas holiday from sunny LA to my family's new home in the chilly hill towns of Western Massachusetts. The Uggs my mom gifted me that Christmas became a survival staple for me that year, and I have never looked back, incorporating various Ugg styles into my wardrobe year after year.

This fall, I was inspired to add a new pair of Uggs to my collection after seeing a dear friend's little daughter wearing a pair of plum colored Bailey Button Ankle Boots. As it turned out, the fun color of her boots wasn't available in adult sizes, but I am loving my Baileys in basic black with black shearling. Although, I will forever treasure my chestnut colored Classic Tall Uggs, I was excited for a shorter pair that could be more easily worn beneath pants, rather than tucking my pants in. The versatility of the Bailey style also appealed to me, as I have the option of wearing them with the shearling cuff up or down for two totally different looks. As Kira explained to me, the Tularosa offers an update on the classic Ugg boot with the addition of a removable cable knit overlay that can be worn pulled up over the leg. After my post on Hunter's basket weave welly socks last month, it probably doesn't come as much of a surprise that I love the look of the Tularosa's knit sock component. And to that point, the color pairings of the removable cable knit overlay and boot are an added bonus. While it's hard to beat the classic pairing of chestnut and ivory, I also love the chocolate with chocolate, as well as the black with grey. Basically, you can't go wrong.

So how many Uggs are too many Uggs? I'm not sure that such a limit exists, especially when each pair is cozier than the last. My approach is to always embrace variety by choosing distinct colors and styles to keep things interesting--while staying warm and cozy, regardless of plummeting temperatures and snowy surprises. I've been on the look-out for some brown ankle boots for some time now, but with the exception of the Rachel Zoe pair that I simply can't afford, I've been striking out. That is, until I spotted these wedges by Betsey Johnson in the October edition of InStyle magazine. Called the Roan Wedge, these lace-up suede ankle boots feature a 5-inch heel, as well as a 1-inch hidden platform, and they are available in brown, blue, and black--but of course I've got my sights set on brown.

I'm digging the Roan's distinctly bohemian vibe, and I love the autumnal feel of the rich brown. I envision wearing these boho booties with flared jeans or even a pair of skinnies--and with a price tag of $140, they're totally reasonable. Still, I'm slightly hesitant... I'm wondering about their versatility. Could I wear them to work--or are they too youthful, maybe too hippie? Or would they be fabulously intellectual, perhaps even professorial, with a pair of wool pants and a cozy sweater? Let me know your thoughts. After all, I simply couldn't bear a footwear fiasco.

Welly Socks

My rainboots are one of my favorite things. I was gifted a pair of red Hunter wellies last year, and their cheerful color and durable rubber design makes any rainy day that much brighter. But as an east coast girl, when the temperature starts to drop, I need a little bit more than rubber boots to keep my feet warm--and I've often traded in my Hunters for whatever Ugg design (or two...) I might be sporting that season. Call me slow to the party, but I didn't realize that stylishly arming my Hunters against the elements was also an option. Hello, amazing welly socks!

While shopping at Nordstrom on a recent rainy night, their Hunter display caught my eye (oh, those clever visual merchandisers!). A cable sock in a classic cream color was peering over the top of pair of red Hunter boots just like mine. Upon closer inspection, I recognized a new style for Hunter's own welly socks. I was familiar with their basic fleece boot liner, but I never invested in a pair, feeling that they lacked a certain je ne sais quois (that's what I meant before about stylishly arming my Hunters against plummeting temperatures). But these cable liners were different--or, more accurately, the "Basketweave" sock, which features a classic knit cuff atop their standard fleece welly sock.

In addition to the cream color that I went for, the Basketweave is available in pink, cream, khaki green, charcoal, and black so you're guaranteed to find the right sock to accent whatever color welly boot you fancy. Personally, I also really love the charcoal so I'm going to have to keep those in mind as a potential future purchase. But color aside, in my view, it's all about the knit cuff, which folds over the top of your boot and adds a bit of timeless prep to your step. Plus, they keep your tootsies warm--and you all know how much I love form and function. I have to admit, I was actually a little disappointed to wake up to clear skies this morning...

Everyday Equestrian

In my adolescence, I spent a good deal of time riding horses--and I have to confess that my favorite part about it was undoubtedly the wardrobe. I find the whole look--riding boots, jodhpurs, and all--to be so elegant and timeless. It has been years since I've been on horseback, but my feelings about the equestrian look haven't changed a bit. However, riding boots are really the only component of equestrian fashion that I've managed to embrace in my normal life to date. This is all about to change--thanks to my favorite denim company, J Brand.

It's difficult for me to pick a favorite color, but I'm leaning towards congo; I feel like that shade of army green can really enhance the fall color palette, whether it's matched with subtle neutrals or more brilliant shades like red
and orange. But regardless of your color selection, the jodhpur's versatility speaks volumes. For a more formal look, they can be paired with high heels and a blazer. Alternatively, to keep things casual, they could just as easily be worn more with boots or flats and a cozy sweater. However, even if you're opting for casual, their inherent elegance and timelessness makes the jodhpur a wardrobe staple.

My crystal ball tells me that we will be seeing a lot of jodhpurs in the upcoming season, and I'm totally on board with this trend. So this fall, bring the equestrian to the everyday. Your closet will thank you.

Booties for Fall

Earlier this week, when I awoke before my alarm (shocking, I know) to a deluge of rain and a chilly 50-degree temperature, I decided I would take advantage of the inclement weather by debuting my new pair of caramel brown Tory Burch knee-high leather boots. While I recognized that the first week of September was awfully early to venture into boot season, I felt safe with my footwear selection for two reasons: (1) Labor Day had officially passed; and (2) the weather seemed to mandate something sturdy. Paired with leggings, a black silk tunic with the same caramel brown speckles; and a tweed blazer, not only did I feel ready to take on a rainstorm, but I felt more ready for fall than ever.

More than any other season, I love fall fashion. After those scalding summer days, I find it almost relieving to think about layers, to cozy up in luxe fabrics, and to embrace a subdued yet utterly rich color palette. Oh, and I love boots.

Finding the perfect pair of boots akin to treasure hunting in a lot of ways; I mean, I can hardly describe the indescribable joy I experienced upon discovering the aforementioned pair of brown Tory Boots (I have the same pair in black) at Off 5th for a fraction of their original price. What's more, there are so many different occasions that call for different boot styles. Reasonably speaking, I believe it could take a lifetime to develop a comprehensive boot collection. At a minimum, a girl needs brown and black flat boots, as well as brown and black tall boots. So that's four pairs of boots right out of the gate. But then there's dress-up boots vs. casual boots, Ugg boots, cowboy boots, rain boots, thigh-high boots, and ankle boots... It's enough to make your head spin!

Boots are not a new topic for She's Come Unheeled. In fact, my very first post discussed the merits of ankle boots (also commonly known as booties or shooties), which remain a tried and true style today. So, some 2 1/2 years later, I have booties on my mind again. While I was catching up on my celebrity gossip today, perusing the most recent issue of Us magazine, a particular pair caught my eye, which herald from the collection of celebrity-stylist-turned-designer, Rachel Zoe. From what I know of her--all thanks to the wonderful world of reality TV--I'm not exactly of fan, but I have to admit that the girl's got style, and her Audrey Booties are evidence of such.

Made for fall, these suede ankle boots will take you to new heights--quite literally, with their 5 1/2 inch heel and nearly 2 inch platform. Since I'm practically 6 feet tall without the enhancement of footwear, it is perhaps a little bit scary to do this math, but also kind of awesome. Just saying. I love the warm, buttery brown that seems to be everywhere this season and shows well in suede. The elastic gore insets at the ankle offer some additional texture, and as far as wearability is concerned, also make the booties easy to pull on and off. I envision these booties worn with skinny pants or with a fitted skirt and a pair of opaque tights. The only downside is their $395 price tag, which is definitely steep. Maybe that's just the price we pay for turning over a new leaf and embracing the on-season trend--or maybe we'll get lucky and score them on sale as the leaves begin to fall...

Tee-shirts have always been a wardrobe staple for me. Versatility is a quality that I constantly strive for, reasoning that if an item can't give me a lot of mileage, then my hard-earned dollars are best spent elsewhere. Obviously, tees offer a lot of bang for your buck, as they can be worn in their basic form with jeans and flip-flops for a casual everyday look, or dressed up by adding a tailored blazer on top and your favorite party shoes. Needless to say, I own a lot of tees so I have been trying to clear out the old to make room for the new--and to be very, very selective when it comes to actually purchasing a new one.

That being said, it was love at first sight for me with this adorable Juicy graphic tee. My love affair with Juicy dates back about ten years to my early college days (uh-oh, I am aging myself!), and I have collected what is perhaps an unhealthy--yet utterly fabulous--amount of Juicy pieces since. However, I have tried to limit my purchases of blatantly branded Juicy items, opting instead for unadorned track pants and hoodies, sweaters, tops, and accessories that represent the girly indulgence that is Juicy without turning me into a billboard (which is not to say that I don't have some of those as well). Yet, in spite of a little name dropping, I can't help but love love love this tee. In fact, what's not to like about this simple charcoal-colored graphic, printed on a super-soft cotton crewneck in a vintage white?

The stylists at Juicy recommend wearing this tee "beneath a tuxedo jacket and a pile of necklaces." Add a light smokey eye to the equation, and I really can't think of a better look for a night out. It appears that couture is, in fact, here--and it's gone casual.

Geek Chic: the Laptop Edition

I have been dreaming of a new Apple laptop for what feels like forever, but it has been difficult for me to budget for such an extravagant purchase when I feel like there are always so many other things to buy and do. Fortunately for me, I have an amazing husband, who surprised me with a shiny new Macbook Air on my 28th birthday a couple of weeks ago. And so the search for the ideal case to protect my pretty little laptop began--because a fashion blogger absolutely needs to have the right accessories!

So, after an exhaustive online search that spanned several days, I finally placed an order for the Stardust Neoprene Computer Case from Marc by Marc Jacobs. My main priority was protecting my irresistibly thin and light computer so I was set on a neoprene case, and this one just...spoke to me. Embossed with the Marc Jacobs logo and alternating star and heart icons, this neoprene sleeve features an enameled logo plate, zip top, and a padded interior with fuzzy faux-fur lining. While this case is also available in black and violet, it should come as no surprise that I opted for the blindingly hot pink. Incidentally, based on my research, the $42 price tag that I scored from Shopbop is pretty standard for neoprene cases of its type--and $6 less than the advertised Marc Jacobs' price.

The moral of the story is that I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Now my new computer is not only protected, but it's pretty in pink too.

Cosmetic confession: I have a standing date with my flat iron every morning at approximately 8:00 AM. You see, I was blessed with not-quite-straight-but-not-exactly-curly-or-even-totally-wavy hair that is basically a hot mess when allowed to run wild. So I straighten religiously, with the help of the amazing GHD flat iron that I bought at the recommendation of my dear friend, Annie Rose. Every now and then, when the mood strikes me, I opt for curl, but I generally keep things on the straight on narrow.

The reason I felt the need to make this confession--that some might consider "TMI"--was so that you could understand how excited I was, upon opening Sephora's new fall catalog, to discover the mere existence of Living Proof's Straight Spray. Until this recent discovery, I had actually never heard of Living Proof--and shame on me, for it turns out that the company was created just a stone's throw away from me in Cambridge, MA, and the Living Proof Story is actually a pretty interesting one. The company was founded by Polaris Venture Partners (an uber successful venture capital firm) and a team of scientists that includes MIT professor Dr. Bob Langer, and it is this uniquely qualified team that allows Living Proof to utilize "advanced technology to solve beauty's toughest challenges." The Straight Spray, a styling spray designed to extend the life of straight styles, is one of their newest inventions.

This past season, I was impressed by J Brand's fresh take on summer pants, with a bold color palette that set the bar high for what they might do next. I admit, I wasn't expecting quite the same pop(!) for the fall season, as fall is traditionally equated with a more a subdued color scheme. Nonetheless, J Brand has done it again, with their newly debuted fall collection, which features luxe fabrics in irresistibly rich jewel tones.

Earlier this summer, I read a fall forecast in one of my fashion magazines that featured J Brand's Ali Corduroys as one example of the fall trend towards corduroy and velvet pants, which--incidentally--are predicted to be all the rage this season. I've been anxiously awaiting the release of the Ali ever since. While I'm typically not a high-rise lover, I'm thinking I might be willing to make an exception here. Paying homage to the 70s, the Ali features a wide leg and is made from a thin wale corduroy with a bit of spandex for a comfortable and flattering fit. The high waist is accentuated by front and back pockets, and the long inseam (35 inches) is perfect for tall girls like me (shorties can take 'em to the tailor). They're available in "toffee," a rich caramel-flavored brown, or "vintage sailor," a smokey navy blue--but I'm partial to the fall feel of the warm, toffee brown. I mean, I can already see myself wearing these pants while picking out my pumpkin at Halloween.

I first considered the merits of going nude when nude footwear began popping up like spring flowers last year, and it feels like I've been searching for my own perfect pair ever since. It's not that I'm unwilling to purchase a pair of shoes at a reasonable price (I am!), but it just so happened that the pairs I really and truly loved came at a premium. Sigh.

This being said, you can imagine my excitement when I discovered a pair of nude pumps that I loved amongst the rows of shoes at Marshall's last week. They were the perfect neutral shade, not overly beige or pink like many of the other options I've seen over the last year. That, in addition to a sky-high heel, hidden platform, slightly boxy toe, and a $40 price tag made these nude patent leather heels from Guess a total no-brainer. I immediately put my new shoes to use around the office twice last week and two more times this week, finding that they complimented an all-black business look just as well as a more casual pairing of grey pants and a navy-and-white striped sweater. Indeed, it is the versatility of nude footwear that I really love. I have a pair of amazing black Louboutin heels that I wear almost daily, but the nude patent leather adds something light and bright to my strip, while remaining utterly functional.

Apparently I'm not the only one who's all for going nude either. I recently spent some time in the Big Apple with my lovely friend, India, and nude footwear was on her radar too. With an upcoming wedding to attend, she was searching for the perfect pair of nude heels to compliment a navy cap-sleeved bandage dress. Like me, she was concerned with finding the right shade of neutral, as well as a shoe design that could transition appropriately from summer to early fall. I couldn't be more excited to attend the Savage Beauty exhibit at the Met in just a couple of weeks with one of my dearest friends, India. Since I've been thinking about Alexander McQueen and getting myself amped about his exhibit for some time now, it seemed appropriate when I received today's email from Saks Fifth Avenue, announcing the newest signature jewelry from the McQueen collection.

Sadly, the Alexander McQueen behind the Alexander McQueen brand passed away in early 2010, but his fashion house lives on, thanks to creative director Sarah Burton (whose current claims to fame include Kate Middleton's wedding gown). The newest jewelry collection is as characteristically McQueen-macabre as ever, which speaks to my fashion sensibilities through and through. In particular, the Double Wrap Charm Bracelet caught my eye. Made of chunky brass chain links that wrap twice around the wrist, this bracelet features two oversized charms: a flower and a skull, equipped with Swarovski crystal studded eye sockets.

With the balance between feminine and morbid tipping towards the latter, you have to be pretty rockstar to rock this style. Of course, I'm thinking I have what it takes to wear this beautiful bracelet--just perhaps not the spending power to actually purchase it. Sigh. I suppose a girl can always dream, and some girls dream in Alexander McQueen.

I love statement jewelry as much as the next girl, but in my daily life, I have to be careful just how "loud" a statement I make. As I've mentioned before, I spend my 9-to-5 in a conservative corporate environment so I've found that smaller statement pieces (mainly rings) or those with a traditional look (think: lots of pearls) are viewed as more acceptable than some of the in-your-face alternatives. Still, I am a girl who loves bling, and perhaps for this reason I was immediately captivated by the uniquely wearable statement of Anthropologie's Golden Renaissance Necklace.

Created by Anton Heunis, this chunky brass link necklace features glass and agate, along with embedded Swarovski crystals. The contrasting materials are what stood out to me, for I appreciate the way they work together to create an earthy yet glamorous effect. While this necklace is bold and unusual, somehow the earthy vibe allows it to make a statement without being too over-the-top. With my birthday on the not-too-distant horizon, I'm absolutely hoping that the Golden Renaissance finds its way into a pretty wrapped box. Last week, I had the opportunity to spend the week on North Carolina's Outer Banks with my husband and his family. Those seven blissful days were composed of sun, sand--and more sun and sand, which was exactly what I had been hoping for. As a result, I feel as though I have perfected the art of packing a beach bag. There are some things you just have to have--and others that only add extra weight (which is even less enjoyable while trudging through hot sand). Here are the key ingredients:

To this end, I'm in love with Kiehl's Vital Sun Protection Lotion. Each day during my vacation, I slathered it on--and completely avoided any sort of sunburn (a huge feat for a girl who hasn't spent time in the sun in practically forever), returning home at the end of my trip with that coveted golden glow. What makes this sunscreen so fabulous is its lightweight, non-greasy formula that's water resistant for up to 80 minutes in the water--and a little bit goes a long way in coverage.

Dry off. My husband and I both have summer birthdays (his is today!), and a few years ago, my mom gifted a pair of Ralph Lauren beach towels. These towels were a staple for us this past week. Plush and over sized, they were a treat to return to after braving the surf or swimming in the pool. Plus, even though we've had our set for a while, they've more than withstood the test of time; the cotton terry is as soft as ever, and there's no piling or fading to be seen.

Don't forget your hat. One thing I wish I had with me last week was an over sized straw hat of my own. There is something so classic--albeit a bit dramatic--about a wide-brimmed straw hat, yet they are so utterly practical at the same time. When the sun is strong and the temperature high, it can be a relief to shield your face from the baking sun under the indulging brim of a summer hat like this one from J. Crew. Not to mention that a fashionista should always embrace the opportunity to rock fun accessories.

While my guidance isn't exactly earth-shattering, what I learned during my vacation is the best beach bags are those packed simply. The fact of the matter is, when you're at the beach, you don't need a lot of extra stuff; after all, you're there to enjoy the sun, sand, surf, and hopefully some really good company as well. Amongst the seemingly millions of emails I receive daily from the millions of places I enjoy shopping, today's Saks Fifth Avenue email stood out, as it announced new arrivals from Marc by Marc Jacobs. If not my favorite designer, Marc Jacobs is definitely in my top five. Often working with distinct patterns, colors, or materials, I find his work is always unique, and while remaining contemporary, he also manages to incorporate a retro-cool vibe.

While perusing the new arrivals to the Marc by Marc Jacobs collection online at Saks, I had to smile, as a few choice items speak to this week's topics at She's Come Unheeled--namely neon and high-heeled loafers. So let's recap (and/or shop Marc Jacobs), shall we?

As I mentioned on Tuesday, neon is everywhere this summer. I'm generally partial to neon pink, but it was love at first sight when I laid eyes on the Candy Logo Bracelet. If you're unsure about neon, accessories like this are a great way to test the trend. Made of resin, this chunky neon bangle has the Marc logo etched all around it. What Saks calls "chartreuse" translates more along the lines of neon citrus and packs enough punch to brighten up any look. Plus, with a price tag of only $32, it's a no-brainer.

Then, as we discussed on Wednesday, high-heeled loafers will be all the rage for fall footwear, and I couldn't be more converted. Marc's revision of the classic look comes in a shiny brown aptly called "luggage" and features a stacked uber-high heel, Oxford tassels, and an exposed platform. I'm not going to lie, Marc's Stacked Leather Penny Loafers are giving my earlier Schutz pick a run for their money (though I do so love Schutz's wooden heel)--while staking claim to a bit more of my money at the price of $390 (compared to $210 for the Schutz loafers). Decisions, decisions!

Fall Fashion Preview: A Penny For Your...Feet

Although, fall is still months away, the fashion magazines are already offering previews of the upcoming trends. Since the warm, sunny weather only recently showed its face here in New England, I hesitate to think of its departure just yet. Still, fall is my favorite season, and I love a fashion preview as much as the next girl--and so I found myself devouring the pages of the June edition of Harper's Bazaar over the weekend...

I never thought I would get so excited about plain old penny loafers, but this fall, designers like Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, and Opening Ceremony have reinterpreted what has traditionally seemed uber preppy--perhaps even stuffy--footwear. The key ingredient: a sky-high heel, which elevates the loafer's look from old school to contemporary in a matter of inches.

Personally, I see great possibility in this fall's fresh take on the traditional loafer. If you'll pardon the cliché, they are absolutely geek-meets-chic, which just so happens to be the same category in which (if asked) I would classify my daily wardrobe. As a girl with a 9 to 5 gig in a mostly conservative office, I try to keep my look professional, though I also feel it's also important to represent my personal style aesthetic. The result might be best described as "intellectual with an edge," which has me gravitating towards Schutz's Penny Loafer Pump. What Cusp by Neiman Marcus calls a "neck-breaking wooden heel" ensures that this isn't the penny loafer of bygone days, yet a loafer it remains.

The Neon Question

A couple of weeks ago, while shopping at J. Crew, I was thrilled to see neon pink everywhere. In fact, while waiting in line for an open register, I noticed that the girl in front of me had a pair of neon pink shorts in her pile--which got me thinking: I love neon, but can I pull off those shorts?

Indeed, neon--whether pink, yellow, green, or orange--is tricky. I've had success with small pops of neon, like Essie's Punchy Pink on my nails or a flashy neon headband. But to commit to a full neon article of clothing is a big question mark for me; that is to say, I'm not totally sure how much neon is too much neon. The shorts I'm currently coveting are J. Crew's 9-inch chino Bermuda shorts in the aptly categorized shade of "shocking pink." I'm not going to lie, they are somewhat blinding to look at, yet I sort of love them... But would I look absolutely ridiculous? Maybe. There's also a distinct possibility that it would be impossible to stare directly at me if I were wearing such a shockingly pink pair of shorts--sort of like staring at the sun. Decisions, decisions.

So I've been having this neon debate in my head for the last couple of weeks. Then, just this past weekend, while catching up on a neglected stack of fashion magazines, I happened upon some sage wisdom from Tim Gunn in the May 2011 issue of Marie Claire. In his regular column, "Gunn Laws," he solves readers' style conundrums, and in the May issue, one reader cleverly voiced the neon question, inquiring what she should pair with a neon cardigan. Gunn advises against pairing neon with white or black, instead recommending mid-tone neutrals, such as grey or brown, to lend a sophistication that could otherwise cause the neon to look jejune. As evidenced by the accompanying photo of Jessica Alba, there is something to be said for balancing a brilliant neon with an warm yet understated neutral shade; somehow, the pairing seems to lesson the blatant shock of such a bright color while preserving its stylish punch.

After reading "Gunn Laws," it appears I have my answer: neon pink shorts can work, but only if paired properly. Of course, this only begs the question: what is the proper pairing? I guess I won't be adding the shorts to my online shopping cart just yet, but I'm definitely thinking about it. Summer Stripes

Stripes are one of my favorite summer looks. I particularly love the nautical feel of a classic navy stripe, which may be why the Barite Top by Tory Burch is calling my name. The summery short-sleeve, crew neck tee features navy and ivory stripes, but Miss Burch ups the ante by adding rope and stud detailing at the sleeves that I'm absolutely obsessed with.

The Tory Burch website suggests layering the Garine Top over the Barite, and as a girl who loves mixing patterns, I think the result totally works. The heavier weight of the roping and stripes means that they peek out from beneath the spotted cotton silk for a more bohemian spin on the nautical look. If (when?) I'm lucky enough to own both pieces, I would pair them with a pair of jeans and some high, high wedges for the perfect summer look.

Despite the title of today's post, I promise you that we're going to keep things classy...and discuss stripping--nail polish, that is. Shopping for vintage tees is one of my favorite things. Along with one of my dearest friends, Annie Rose, I have spent countless hours scouring vintage shops from LA to Seattle to Boston in the hopes of discovering the perfect tee. You know the kind of tee I mean--broken in to the point of ideal softness, exactly the right fit, sporting some fantastic graphic or slogan that either means nothing to you (my favorite, a "Compton Cheerleading" tee I discovered back in high school) or everything to you (I'm obsessed with my "Wilson Lacrosse" find). Stumbling upon these pre-owned gems is like the fashion version of buried treasure--and now you can treasure hunt for a good cause!

Just last week, my lovely friend, Sarah, forwarded an article from Good, "Repatriating Retro T-Shirts from Africa (for a Good Cause)." The article profiles the work of the Boston-based non-profit organization, Project Repat. After noticing a rickshaw operator in Nairobi wearing a tee proclaiming, "I danced my a** off at Josh’s bar mitzvah. Santa Barbara, California. January, 2006," co-founders Sean Hewens and Ross Lohr realized that many African people ended up wearing vintage tees that found their way to the secondary market after being donated to Goodwill or the Salvation Army in the US. Project Repat was born from this inspiration; tees are returned to the US, where they are rebranded and resold at vintage store prices in an effort to support non-profits in the developing world by creating a truly unique t-shirt experience for American consumers and providing a second chance at fame for the t-shirts that got away. Obviously, it is a win-win.

Never being one to pass up the opportunity to shop for a good cause, I had to check out the Project Repat Online Store myself. There, you can shop tees by size or repatriation location. I am happy to report that I am now the proud owner of a fabulous "Gymnastics Coach" tee, after it was repatriated from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. For $25, I scored a vintage tee with a story--and played a small part in supporting the non-profit organizations improving lives in Tanzania (profits from each tee support initiatives in the specific country where the tee was repatriated from).

Just last week, as my husband and I were confirming our summer travel plans, it occured to me that the summer is indeed right around the corner. After all, Memorial Day is three weeks away, and as far as my calendar is concerned, Memorial Day weekend is like the starting line of summer. So, with a family trip to the Outer Banks on the books for July, I've been thinking a lot about travel, all the fun fashions that go along with it, and--of course--the luggage that contains it all.

Not to state the obvious, but luggage is key to travel, and having the right luggage for a given situation is crucial. If I'm traveling by plane, I make it a point to cram everything I could possibly need into a carry-on suitcase, since waiting for my luggage at the end of a long flight is akin to torture for an inpatient girl such as myself. There's clearly a bit more flexibility where luggage is concerned if traveling by car/train/bus/boat, but it's still important to choose wisely. I mean, if you're lucky enough to possess a Louis Vuitton trunk, it's not going camping with you (an exaggeration to be sure, but I'm dramatic--and you get the point).

Fortunately, it's not necessary to have a separate piece of luggage for every occasion, though it would be rather fun from a fashion standpoint. Rather, there are some amazingly versatile pieces that will serve you well in any number of situations. Yet, at times I've found that a full suitcase--even one that is carry-on sized--can overkill for a simple weekend away. Wallets: Out With the Old, In With the New

I distinctly remember my mom buying me a pink Vera Bradley wallet when I was in elementary school and calling it my "training wallet." I wasn't allowed to carry any real money around in it until I proved that I was responsible enough to keep track of its whereabouts (totally normal, right?). I passed the test, and remained loyal to Vera Bradley wallets all the way until this past December.

In college, my Vera Bradley "wallet" with a key-ring attachment was ideal; it allowed me to keep my room and mailbox key together with my Colby Card, which was prominently displayed in the clear plastic window built into the wallet. Somehow, I also managed to fit all my cash, cards, and change into the small--though often overcrowded--wallet too, which meant I hardly ever needed to carry my handbag with me when I went out. Great system while I was at school, but... not so great once I entered the real world. I realized it was time for a more grown-up look AND a more sophisticated storage system. Plus, carrying a purse meant that I could have my keys in a separate place from my wallet...oh the possibilites!

After exploring my options online, I settled on the continental wallet style. With a zipper to contain everything, and slots to organize all my cards it seemed ideal. I was immediately drawn to Tory Burch's Robinson Zip Continental Wallet, but I continued to search. I then managed to fall in love with an amazing Bottega Veneta wallet, but seeing as how I wouldn't have much money left over to store in the wallet, Bottega and I had to part ways.

Back to Tory. With wallets available in a variety of colors and materials, it seems there must be a style for everybody at Tory Burch, but it was the leather Robinson that truly spoke to me. And seeing as how I wanted to have money left to store in my wallet after making the purchase, Tory Burch's pricetag seemed reasonable. I decided on a simple design: black leather with a gold logo, a classic start to what I hope will ultimately be my extensive wallet collection. And mom would be proud because, so far, I haven't lost it.

Sunglasses are perhaps my favorite accessory. Winter, spring, summer, fall--I simply can't go without them. And as I may have mentioned before, I subscribe to the Jackie O school of sunglasses: bigger is better. In fact, if I'm wearing sunglasses, I'd prefer not to see my eyebrows. Yet, despite these rather specific parameters, once I find a pair of shades that I adore, I'm in it for the long haul. To this point, the Chloé glasses that I'm currently wearing have been my go-to pair for about three years now, and I don't think I could ever grow tired of them. That being said, there's a new trend on the sunglasses horizon that has me intrigued...

The last time we talked about cat eyes, it was all about make-up; this time, it's strictly sunglasses. This past weekend, I seized the opportunity to immerse myself in the stack of fashion magazines that had accumulated on my coffee table, and it became immediately apparent that cat eye sunglasses are all the rage. But these are not the small-framed cat eyes of bygone days. Rather, the cat eye has been reinvented, now sporting a more contemporary, over-sized look, while maintaining their vintage charm.

It seems that everyone is doing a spin on cat eyes this season, notably Ray Ban, Dior, Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Valentino, and Kate Spade--but in my view, the fairest of them all is Elizabeth and James. Elizabeth and James actually boasts several cat eye styles, which hit stores this past fall when Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen's company partnered with Hong Kong-based Absolute Black Design to launch Elizabeth and James' first line of sunglasses. And as much as I'd love to hate the Olsen twins for being queens of absolutely everything, those girls really, really know their fashion. I'm basically obsessed with their Fairfax Catseye.

With an undeniable retro appeal, the Fairfax features plastic frames in either black or tortoise, with metal temples and gradient lenses. What appeals to me is their bold, over-sized look and subtle detailing that makes them stand out from the other cats out there. Typically, I'm all about black sunglasses, but I'm actually quite drawn to the tortoise this time, perhaps for its subtle geek appeal? I confess, I have yet to try them on, which is critical when purchasing sunglasses, so I can't yet speak to whether or not they can/will pass the eyebrow test, but I am absolutely going to find out. So, perhaps it's the dawning of a new era--or at least a new pair of sunglasses. Here, kitty kitty...

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Today is Earth Day, and while I'm tempted to tout all the eco-friendly beauty products I've been reading about this week (it seems all the fashion blogs have gone green this week), my Earth Day fashion message is a simple one: reduce, reuse, recycle. If you grew up in a public school system like mine, then you probably learned about the "three Rs" in second grade, but who knew there was a fashion lesson therein? Indeed, one of the most eco-friendly moves you can make is to enjoy AND share fashion that's already right there.

Truly, there is nothing greener that reducing your carbon footprint by indulging in pre-existing clothing and accessories (think: vintage, consignment shops, Ebay!). Not only is it the "green" thing to do, but the pre-owned route can save you a pretty penny. In fact, in celebration of Earth Day, my favorite consignment chain, Second Time Around, is having a special sale this weekend. Between now and Sunday, you can save 20% on all new arrivals--and if you're not familiar with Second Time Around's process, anything that isn't a "new arrival" is marked down even more, depending on how long it's been in the store. Yay savings!

Yet, even more important than indulging ourselves is the fact that we can reduce waste by recycling our cast-offs. Now, I'm entirely sure that I'm preaching to the choir on this one, but that sweater that looked so great in the catalogue but is still hanging in the back of your closet a year later (ring a bell?) could go a long ways towards helping someone. Manolo Comes to Saks!

It's official: Manolo Blahnik has arrived at Saks! This is a day many faithful Manolo-loving-Saks-Fifth-Avenuers have likely been waiting for, though I must confess that when I received the email announcing said arrival, my first thought was, Did Saks not have Manolos? I suppose a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do to her shoes, allegiances or not. Nonetheless, I was excited to shop Saks' online Manolo Blahnik Event to see what styles might end up on my wish list...

The BB Studded Leather and Python Pumps are it. Featuring an intricate pattern of studs, a pointed toe, and a metallic python heel, this shoe is undoubtedly edgy, particularly by Manolo standards. Nonetheless, the gunmetal-toned studs are tiny and bead-shaped, maintaining an air of sophistication that might even be considered demure amongst those who have a penchant for studs and spikes. Princess Pucker

I have a confession to make: I just don't care about the Royal Wedding (gasp, I know). Sure, Kate Middleton seems like a lovely young woman--and how exciting to be a real live Princess--but what's it to me, really? Nevertheless, when I received an email from butter London, the name of the shade of their NEW lippy No More Waity, Katie was just too cute and clever to resist.

Lippy is apparently what we "Yanks" know as lipgloss, and it is butter's first--and long awaited--departure from their line of amazing nail lacquer. The soft, sheer lavender gloss with tiny flecks of lilac glitter promises to help you land a prince of your very own. But don't feel that you have to pass on No More Waity, Katie if you're already living happily ever after with your Prince Charming! The light-reflective glitter will supposedly make your lips look fuller and more snog-worthy, and what girl (regardless of her bloodline) can pass on a claim to fame like that? So the truth is, while I could care less about the upcoming Royal Wedding, a princess pucker is definitely something I can get on board with.

Pretty In Pink

A cocktail ring is like a handshake, a first impression that speaks volumes about the fashionista within. As a ring, even the largest and flashiest of cocktail rings is still, compared to your overall look, rather small in size so I feel that if you're going to wear one, you had better make it count. Now that spring is here, this task is far from challenging; like spring flowers, pretty rings in bright colors are everywhere for the picking. And my pick is pretty in pink.

I am obsessed. There is no other way to describe how I feel about the Lollie Ring by Kate Spade. Aside from the fact that it seems to be named for me (shame that they opted for the "ie"--Lolly packs so much more punch), it is the most amazing ring I have seen in quite some time. Made of 12-karat gold plated metal, the Lollie features a brilliant beacon of color in the form of a hot pink enamel bauble (I think my heart just skipped a beat), surrounded by clusters of multi-colored rhinestones. Kate Spade calls it a top-shelf cocktail ring--and I couldn't agree more. I want, want, WANT it.

So who wants to buy it for me? Any takers? It would fit so nicely in an itty bitty Easter basket. Just saying.

Pants That Pop!

Warning: this post is not for the faint of heart--or at the very least, if you're afraid of color, consider yourself warned. In past posts, I've raved about the glories of color, suggesting a little pop(!) of color for your nails or perhaps your shoes. But today is different; today we're going all out with pants that really pop!

Isn't color exactly what you need on this snowy APRIL day? J Brand to the rescue. Their new line of Haute Hues is where bold color meets go-to classic. Made of Japanese luxe twill and fitted from hip to ankle with a slightly higher-rise, the 811 Mid-Rise Skinny Leg is available in pretty much every color of the rainbow. More On Hippie Chic For Spring: The Maxi

Tall girls, rejoice! This spring and summer, long is in and maxi dresses and skirts abound. In my opinion, it's about time. Thigh-grazing hemlines are basically a tee-shirt for me so seeing lots and lots of length on the recent Fashion Week runways was more refreshing than I can say. And for a girl who loves a bit of boho glam, the maxi is an effortless way to embrace hippie chic this spring.

Having done my share of online window shopping this past weekend, I'm officially head over heels for the Chroma Reflections Maxi Dress from Anthropologie. Without getting too literal, this lovely dress seems to channel Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds, as a floral kaleidoscope blooms upon this delicate silk landscape by Edme & Esyltte. With pullover styling, gathered bell sleeves, and a smocked waistline, perhaps its best characteristic--second to elegance--is ease. And to be clear, I'm talking throw-on-this-dress-and-a-pair-of-Rainbows kind of ease. Unless, of course, you're the kind of hippie to go barefoot...

Hippie Chic for Spring

Like many of you out there, I feel that I have spent the winter--and perhaps even the better part of the fall--in skinny jeans. Seasonally speaking, they're more convenient for two reasons: (1) they can be tucked effortlessly into boots and (2) you never run the risk of the hem dragging along the ground and making you cold and wet. Of course, these aren't the only reasons that I love skinny jeans. Rather, their shape is inherently versatile, streamlined, and sophisticated. Yet, with the dawn of spring--and in spite of some very non-springy snow flurries--I've found myself wanting more from my denim... After all, what better time to embrace your inner flower child and return to the bell bottom?

I have been on the hunt for a new pair of trusty bell bottoms for a couple of weeks now. After walking all over London and Paris last March, my go-to pair by Ernest Sewn (with an inseam that turned out to be a tad too lengthy to wear with Converse) are utterly chewed up and destroyed. While I may have my reasons for loving skinny jeans, I have just as many reasons to love the fun flare of a good bell bottom; namely, the fact that they drape perfectly over sneakers or flip-flops and are effortlessly (hippie) chic. So with this criteria in mind and a few hard-earned dollars in my checking account, I hit Bloomingdales last weekend...

As it turns out, I'm not the only flower child out there. Based solely on the selection in the denim department at Bloomingdales, I can say with confidence that hippie is haute this spring. Here is what I took to the dressing room with me:

1.) Babe Power Stretch Mid-Rise Bell Flare Jeans by J Brand: These comfy bells are made using J Brand's own power stretch denim, which is designed to contour the body in all the right places for an ultra-flattering silhouette that will retain its shape. I personally love the mid-rise fit for its smoothing effect, and it also means that I won't have to hike up my pants all the time. And not to play favorites, but I love the subtlety of all J Brand denim; there are never any glaring logos or contrived detailing, and these bells are no exception. Way to keep it classy, J Brand.

2.) Carrie Skinny Knee Wide Flare by True Religion: This new flare from True Religion offers a slim fit through the knee, before breaking at the calf into a wide flare. With a rise slightly higher than most True Religion jeans, I really like the overall look of the Carrie; this may be partly because of the "short-fuse medium" wash, which gives these jeans a broken-in look without trying so hard to be "pre-destroyed."

3.) Dani Stretch Flare by True Religion: Considered the "perfect fit for every body," these low rise flares are made with 2% spandex for the ultimate curve-hugging experience. Unlike the Carrie, these bells feature True Religion's signature diagonally cut side seam, meant to accentuate your curves. I was psyched to find these on the Bloomies sale rack, but as it turns out, I'm just not a huge fan of the diagonal seam; for whatever reason, I can't shake the feeling that my pants are all twisted.

4.) Bell Bottom Super Flare by 7 For All Mankind: With an exaggerated bell, these Sevens have a fun, bohemian appeal to them. The aptly titled "vintage California" wash manages to be both dark and soft, with just a touch of fading and distressing. These bells are fabulously comfortable, but as much as I love the concept of the super flare, in actuality it was just a little too much fabric for me.

Truth be told, it was a clear choice; the True Religion Carrie and J Brand Babe were the right bell bottoms for the job. As far as my budget, the fact that I was only in the market for one rather than two pairs of jeans turned out to be surprisingly non-problematic. As luck would have it, Bloomingdales was running a delicious denim deal this weekend, offering 15% off the purchase of one pair of designer denim, or 25% off the purchase of two pairs. Doubly lucky were the few Bloomies gift cards I had been saving for such an occasion. So, without breaking the bank, I have found myself ready for spring--and quite the little haute hippie too!

When I was growing up, on rainy March days like this one, my mother would always say, "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb." That saying would somehow keep us going, knowing that the end was in sight--that there was indeed light (and spring!) at the end of a long, gloomy tunnel. And while today is precisely that kind of dreary day, after the brutal winter we've had, I find myself grateful for rain instead of snow, humidity rather than freezing temperatures, and cheerful red Hunter rain boots instead of my weather-beaten leaky Uggs. Truly, it's the little things that keep us going, and as fashionistas, it only takes a little pop! of color to have sunshine on a cloudy day.

You may have already started to notice that spring has sprung--in the catalogs and in the stores, at least. I have been happily perusing the pages, creating a mental "to buy" list based on this season's fashions. The common theme on said list is, of course, COLOR. I have come to realize that it makes all the difference, and it is perhaps for this very reason that I found myself inextricably drawn to a pair of fabulous yellow shoes...

Called "elegantly edgy," the very sight of J. Crew's new Sevigne Washed Leather Heels restored sunshine to my rainy morning. Made in Italy using a special washed lamb that's known for its buttery smooth texture, these sunny yellow heels feature a matte stacked heel and an exposed back zipper. I'm especially partial to the platform design since it provides added comfort, along with easy walking, but it's the pop! of yellow that really sells me on this shoe. It's also available in a "soft sandalwood" nude, but in my view, the citrusy zing that J. Crew calls "sour lemon" is fun, versatile, and sure to add a bit of sunshine to any kind of day.

When I read about Bumble and Bumble's newest product, Bb. Texture, in January's Elle, I have to confess that my first thought was: now my hair can look like Blake Lively's. A girl can dream, can't she? Indeed, I've read countless articles in fashion magazines, where stylists dish on how to recreate the blonde beauty's (seemingly) effortlessly tousled tresses. It's never as easy as they say, but with the debut of Bb. Texture, I feel like I've discovered a secret weapon...

Bumble and Bumble's senior Artistic Director, Howard McClaren, explained that the company started seeing [that] hand-done, second-day-hair look on the streets and on celebrities like Alexa Chung and Mary Kate Olsen...but stylists were having to use a combination of products...to reproduce it. Amen to that. Too many products, not enough time, not worth the effort. To fill this gaping hole in the hair care market, Bumble and Bumble created Bb. Texture, touting the newly released product as a hair undressing cream. The directions are happily simple: Work a small amount of Bb. Texture through damp hair (a must), starting at the roots to ensure extra lift. Let the product sit for a minute, and then loosen and ruffle your hair with your fingers. For added volume, you can use a diffuser.

The promised result is hair with that undone-yet-done quality, with a hint of grit, hold and a tousled, shine-free finish. In plain English? Hair that looks like you couldn't care less--but let's be honest, we all do. Bb. Texture is available in two sizes, 5 oz. for $24 or 2 oz. for $12. Just in case it really is too good to be true, I opted for the smaller size when I placed my order online today. I couldn't be more excited to try it, and once I do, you'll be the first to know if--hair gods willing--my hair looks like Blake Lively's. Minus the color. Brunettes are better.
