Love It or Loathe It? Episode 7

It's been far too long since my last episode of Love It or Loathe It?, where we hash out the latest and greatest fashion questions. Fortunately--and fortuitously--the opportunity presented itself to me while I was innocently online window shopping at Saks. Behold, the split-toe ankle boot...

I am so NOT a fan, but it does raise an interesting footwear fashion question: Do you love or loathe the split-toe look? And why?... The verdict will follow on Monday so get your votes in! And as always, thank you for your help and fashion savvy.

XOXO,
Lolly

Happy Birthday!--One Year Later, Still So Obsessed...

Today, dearest fashionista friends, is a very important day: She's Come Unheeled is celebrating its first birthday! So thank you, loyal readers and fashion gurus, for your continued support. And what better way to celebrate than to return to the starting line, with ankle boots? After all, it may be one year later, but I'm still so obsessed!

Interestingly enough, the ankle boot trend--that I lovingly termed "shootie"--is still going strong after a year. Will this look, like Uggs and Juicy sweatsuits, last forever? Perhaps! At any rate, let's revisit why we love them so much in the first place. For one, shooties keep those tootsies warm in the cccold New England winter much more effectively than a skimpy pair of heels ever could. Then there's the issue of versatility; they can be worn with a thick pair of tights and a skirt or dress, or with a fabulous pair of skinny jeans. The possibilities are endless!

Not for nothing, with spring just around the corner, I've noticed a recent modification to the shootie style: the peep toe. While it's definitely not warm enough for me to test this less-than-functional trend, I have to admit that I get the allure. A little peep of a toe, freshly pedicured (obvi) with bright red polish could be cute! I refuse to expose my tootsies to the elements until all the snow and ice is long gone, but come March 20 (or thereabouts) I could get into this. I guess you'll just have to stay tuned--for more on shooties and another year of adventures from your friendly neighborhood fashionista...

Belle of the Ball

If you can believe it, spring is just around the corner (March 20 to be exact), and there is no time like the present to begin your spring cleaning. For some, that means hauling out the broom, mop, and Windex for your own version of extreme makeover home edition, but for fashionistas it means something much, much different: time to clean out the closet! And the timing couldn't be more perfect, with the Belle of the Ball fundraiser extending from now until April 1. Now you can make room for some new spring looks and lend a helping hand at the same time by sharing your super chic dresses with those in need.

Celebrating it's 6th year, the Belle of the Ball fundraiser is a prom dress collection drive that aims to collect, clean, trendy, gently worn gowns and outfit 300-400 junior and senior high school students who otherwise would not be able to attend their prom night. Here's how it works:
  • Dresses can be any size, but they must be in good condition (ie. no rips, holes, broken zippers, or stains).

  • Remember that the dresses will be given to high school juniors and seniors so they should be both trendy and age-appropriate.

  • The dress collection takes place between now and April 1. For your convenience, you can drop off dresses at any Anton's Cleaners of Jordan's Furniture location during this time period.

I know we all remember how important prom was during our high school reign, and now you have a chance to help a new generation of young ladies (hello, fashionistas-in-training!) look and feel fabulous on their special night. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: doing good is always in style.

Special thanks to the lovely Lizzie for the heads-up on this amazing cause!

Johnny Was Here

I was lucky enough to have a mother/daughter date this past Friday night. As you may remember, I inherited my taste for expensive fashion from my beloved Momma so it should come as no surprise that Bloomingdales seemed like an ideal destination for two girls out on the town. Fortunately for us (and our wallets), Bloomingdales was having their fabulous Brown Bag sale. Heaven. On. Earth.

Perusing the seemingly endless racks of marked-down designer duds, I hoped to get lucky. I mean, you can always find great things on sale, but I was in search of something special... which manifested itself in the form of Johnny Was. For those unfamiliar with this line, Johnny Was is the ultimate in urban-bohemian chic from designer Biya Ramar. Her work is known for vibrant silhouettes infused with intoxicating color combinations.

Apparently I had been living under a rock until Friday, having never heard of Johnny Was, but as the saying goes, better late than never! I'm loving all signs that Johnny Was here: the easy, breezy, boho feel of the collection with color palettes, prints, and embroidery that all remind me of the years I spent in LA. So now that I'm officially missing the sun, I can only hope that spring and summer would get a move on it already. After all, I would like to actually wear my new dress!

Bigger Is Better

You may find this difficult to believe, but I was late to arrive at the flat iron party. In fact, I didn't actually own a flat iron until after college. I blame my hair stylist; how could they NOT have told me?!! While I was spending foreverrrr with my blow-dryer and a round brush, I could have been straightening in a snap! with the ease of a Chi. So maybe this is the reason that I have since been obsessed with straight hair? The same could be said of my TV addiction. We had (quite literally) no working channels on our TV growing up--and now watching all of my shows is like a full-time job! But I digress...

Whatever the reason, I have kept my hair on the straight and narrow for a good four years now. My Chi is a vital tool in my daily beauty routine, and I never leave home (overnight, at least) without it. Until a few days ago, that is... While killing time and perusing photos on Facebook from my recent weekend in Vermont with friends, I was startled to realize: my hair is flat. Straight to be sure, but flat flat flatttt? Ick. And just like that, I resolved to embrace the natural kink of my hair--enhanced with a few well-placed curls thanks to my curling iron, obvi.

Having come to this decision, I've noticed that big hair is everywhere in fashion--from the runway, to the red carpet, and featured in fashion editorial spreads like whoa. The common element: big hair equals glamour. Pump up the volume with curl and shape, and viola! Glamour. I decided to test this theory out for myself the past couple of days, ditching my Chi in favour of a little air-dry and a lot of curl. Once I got over feeling like my hair was a total mess, I sort of liked the way my hair totally took over. And what's more, I received more compliments than I had in...forever. What can I tell you? Bigger really is better.

Great Lengths? Not So Much...

A couple of weeks ago, I couldn't contain my excitement about the new Clinique High Lengths Mascara. After purchasing and testing it out for myself, I'm feeling sadly underwhelmed. Great lengths? Not so much...

As I mentioned in my earlier post, the major selling feature of this mascara is the "willow" brush, which is actually a curved, fine-toothed comb that is designed to capture even the tiniest of lashes so as to lengthen. The result is supposedly longer lashes that make your eyes look wide and bright. In my experience, the same willow brush that was supposed to revolutionize my lashes is just a huge pain to use. Rather than tracking down all my lashes, the curved shape of the brush made application difficult. The result: just as much mascara on and around my eyes as on my eyelashes. Such a hot mess--and so NOT what I need in the morning!

In theory, Clinique's vision is a good one, and I suppose that, if you're accustomed to working with a curved brush, this might be a good fit for you. Clearly, I am not that girl, and so--like always--I have run straight back into the open arms of my DiorShow Iconic Mascara. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

R.I.P. Alexander McQueen 1969-2010

To say that the fashion world suffered a huge loss yesterday would be a complete and utter understatement. The untimely death of Alexander (Lee) McQueen leaves a huge void, as the designer was said to be an industry genius. McQueen was found dead in his London flat yesterday, an apparent suicide (though full details of his death have not yet been released). McQueen lost his mother just last week, and reports have speculated that her passing may have been too much for the designer to bear. Notorious Vogue editor, Anna Wintour, responded to McQueen's death by stating, We are devastated to learn of the death of Alexander McQueen, one of the greatest talents of his generation. He brought a uniquely British sense of daring and aesthetic fearlessness to the global stage of fashion. In such a short career, Alexander McQueen’s influence was astonishing — from street style, to music culture and the world’s museums.

As a member of the masses, I feel wrong speculating on the "why," but I certainly maintain that the death of Alexander McQueen is terrible and tragic indeed. As I reflected last year, in my McQueen-themed Halloween post, Alexander McQueen was what some might consider a fashion prodigy. After dropping out of school at the age of sixteen to pursue a career in fashion, his degree collection from Central Saint Martins' Masters program was instantly snatched up by fashion icon/editor Isabella Blow (Blow later took her own life in 2007). Since then, the McQueen label has been renowned for its glamorous statement pieces and signature attitude of sophistication and darkness.

McQueen's sometimes controversial embodiment of high-fashion and macabre has always appealed to me on a personal level, possessing my own fascination for all things slightly melancholy. In the infinitely more poignant words of Anna Wintour, His passing marks an insurmountable loss. May he rest in peace.

Gentleman, start your engines... There are just three days left until V-day; do you have a present for your sweetheart yet? If your answer is no, never fear; you will soon learn that all is never lost when you have She's Come Unheeled just a mouse-click away. Allow me to share my top three Valentine picks, from a gentleman to his lady love:

Because two hearts are better than one... I am newly obsessed with these Logo Heart Studs by Dior. As a Valentine's Day gift, the heart shape is festive and fun. The added bonus is that Dior is always in fashion, and so your lovely lady can also wear them all year. After all, they are as tasteful and elegant as they are sweet.
Pricetag: $130

Say it with sweets... We all know that the road to a lady's heart is paved with sweet treats. In fact, nothing ends a marital spat between my beloved husby and me quite like a piece of carrot cake from the bakery on the corner! Knowing that, what better way to express your love than a dozen cupcakes, each expressing a romantic sentiment--and shipped right to her front door in a festive pink argyle box! Choose from traditional flavors like vanilla or chocolate, or go wild for love with more decadent choices like triple chocolate or red velvet. Mmmm...
Pricetag: $55 per dozen

Because every relationship has a soundtrack... For the anti-Valentine types out there, the soundtrack to 500 Days of Summer--the latest and greatest in anti-love stories--is the perfect way to put your heart on your sleeve without buying into the Hallmark-iest of Hallmark holidays. Tracks like The Smiths' Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want and Meghan Smith's rendition of The Pixies' classic, Here Comes Your Man will ring true to your girl's creative and intellectual sensibilities while making her heart melt (if only on the inside).
Pricetag: $13.99

At Valentine's Day, it really is the thought that counts, and as you can see from my fabulous top three, you don't have to break the bank to be thoughtful. So whether your valentine is a sophisticated fashionista, a pretty little homebody, an intellectual goddess--or better yet, all three!--be sure to show and tell her how she makes your heart go pitter-patter.

XOXO,
Lolly

Going to Great Lengths

As a Beauty Insider, I receive countless emails from Sephora, which I confess that I usually delete. Unless I know exactly what I'm shopping for, I prefer to go into the store to look around, test the products, and get inspired. But a few days ago, I received an email with the subject line, It's here! Needless to say, I was intrigued--and then severely disappointed when I discovered that the "it" in the equation was Kim Kardashian's new fragrance. No thanks!

Fortunately, all was not lost. Scrolling down through the rest of the newsletter, a spotlight on Clinique's new High Lengths Mascara caught my eye. It's no secret that I adore mascara, and I'm always open to trying something new. According to the Sephora website, this mascara provides dramatic length and volume immediately upon application. Clinique's secret weapon? The "willow" brush, which is actually a curved, fine-toothed comb that tracks down every last lash and takes them to great lengths. The result: long, luscious lashes that make your eyes look wider and brighter.

Clearly, I'm sold--and ready for a little online shopping. Stay tuned for the Lolly verdict.

Jeggings: The New Leggings

Like most fashionistas, I love leggings. However, my one problem with leggings is their lack of independence. Sure, they look fabulous under dresses, tunics, and long sweaters--but I have never seen them (effectively and/or fashionably) stand alone. I've seen girls try, and while I applaud their effort, fully exposed leggings look a liiiitle too much like tights. Have we learned nothing from Blair Waldorf? Please, ladies, tights are not pants!

Not surprisingly, the fashion drama doesn't end there. All I've ever wanted is a pair of thick leggings that could actually be worn as pants. Instead, faux denim--a serious faux pas--hit the runway last Spring. I'm relieved to report that the trend didn't stick, but the serious visceral reaction I experienced after watching Rock & Republic's acid-washed faux denim leggings come down the runway left me nauseous, traumatized--and very, very cautious about what would come next...

Jeggings! Part jeans, part leggings, and 100% fabulous. I admit, I was skeptical at first-- a reaction I credit to the post-traumatic stress of the faux denim leggings incident--but there is nothing NOT to love about this sophisticated hybrid! They fit even better than my favorite pair of skinny jeans (a true feat), yet they are infinitely more comfortable. As far as brands go, no one does it better than Paige Premium Denim. After the last few days, I think it's safe to say that I am officially obsessed with Paige's Glam Rock style in vinyl, an irresistible ink-black wash:

Day 1- Spent the day at bessie blue, where Ashley talked me into trying on the Glam Rock Jeggings by Paige. Hellooo, hotness! Bought them then and there.

Day 2- Went to brunch with Dallin. Wore my new Paige jeggings with Uggs, a vintage concert tee, and a long cashmere sweater: comfy AND cute!

Day 3- Dressing for the office made easy: jeggings, tall black boots, and a white long-sleeve tee underneath a grey, twill military-style blazer. Who needs business casual?

Day 4- laundry day!

Day 5- Another fabulous office outfit: jeggings, tall brown boots, a black Theory blazer, and classic Burberry plaid scarf. How's that for a power suit?

The obvious versatility of my amazing Paige jeggings has made them both a wardrobe staple and a fashion-forward force to be reckoned with. I can either wear them alone as jeans or underneath a long, drapey sweater as leggings. And with a comfort level equal or better than regular old leggings, who can argue with that? Not only are jeggings the new leggings, but they're quickly becoming the new jeans too! Clearly, there is no question about who's wearing the pants in this relationship.

Psst: If you're local, you can get your very own pair of Glam Rock Leggings by Paige Premium denim from bessie blue at 21 Leonard Street in Belmont.

Little Tees To Love A LOT

Do I have to remind you that Valentine's Day is just around the corner? Provided that you have left the house recently, I'm sure you have noticed: love is in the air--everywhere. So of course, lolly.brand is no exception! But no worries, I'm not about to get all sappy on you. After all, there are so many kinds of love--and not all of them are the cheesy kind that romantic comedies are made of. Today's post is about the special kind of joyful, protective love you feel for the little ones in your life, whether they be your children, your nieces or nephews, or the kids in the neighborhood that you babysit for. And so I ask: what better way to show your love than a little tee you love A LOT?

Back in the fall, lolly.brand revamped the signature Cupcake Tee with new colors, new sizes--a totally new look--so it was only fair that the lolly.girl tee received a makeover too! Now available is the (new) lolly.brand Signature Cupcake Tee for Little Girls. This soft, minty green tee features the lolly.cupcake in a bright, bubble-gum pink, a sinfully sweet color combination. And there's more! This sweet new style is now available in infant sized onesies--because sometimes good things come in reeeeally little packages!

I'm willing to bet that you won't find a sweeter way to show your little valentine how much you love them. But if your little valentine is a boy who isn't a fan of cupcakes or the pink/green color combo, brand.L by lolly.brand has this one covered. And of course, the brand.L Skateboarder Tee for Little Dudes is now available in infant-sized onesies too--too cute for words!

With styles this sweet, what better way to say "I love you" to your favorite little valentine? The tees might be little, but your favorite little-littles will love them--A LOT!
