Thirteen Things for 2013

Since my last post, summer turned to fall, which turned to winter...which turned to 2013.  Yikes, how the time flies.  So happy New Year to my long neglected but still greatly beloved friends at She's Come Unheeled!  In honor of the New Year and new resolutions ("blog more" is obviously included on my list), I wanted to share thirteen things  that I am already loving or want/need/havetohave in 2013.

Vinyasa Scarf, $48
by Lululemon
Vinyasa Scarf: My amazing sister got me this scarf for Christmas, and it is pretty much the best thing ever.  Its basic function is like an infinity scarf, but this one snaps together so it can essentially be worn in infinity different ways too!  So far, I have only worn it in two ways: snood-style and hood.  I was in Florida last month, and when the temperature dipped towards chilly, this scarf was my go-to accessory to stay warm.  Plus, for you Lulu-addicts like me, this scarf is made with soft Rulu, Lulu's signature running luon fabric that's moisture-wicking and breathable so you won't overheat.  In my humble opinion, this one is a wardrobe must.

Thickening Mascara, $30
by Trish McEvoy
Available at Nordstrom

Thickening Mascara: Trish McEvoy's new mascara is my new cosmetic obsession.  It promises a "formal, false lash effect," a marketing sentiment that was pretty much guaranteed to reel me in (as my husband says, I'm a "marketer's dream").  Nevertheless, I've been using it for months now, and I completely love it.  When I originally made my purchase, I was disappointed to learn that this mascara doesn't have the same tubing effect as Trish's other mascaras, which was one of the primary reasons I started using Trish mascara in the first place.  However, the girl at the Trish counter at Nordstrom advised me to layer this one over my faithful Lash Curling mascara so that I could sort of cheat my way to the tubing effect I desired.  Well, my Lash Curling recently ran out, and after a minor panic attack, I just forged ahead and used the Thickening Mascara by itself.  I have to admit that it works a LOT better on its own!  While no mascara on the planet is able to fully achieve the false-lash look, this one really does do a fabulous job of thickening and building my lashes to make them fan out and really pop.  Every girl needs this.

Harper's new pink TOMS

TOMS: It took me a while to jump on the TOMS bandwagon, but when my mother gave me a pair of fuzzy-lined wool TOMS for my birthday last summer, I was sold (see above sunset photo--I'm rocking my Vinyasa Scarf and my TOMS at the same time, holler!).  The cozy lining helped me transition into the cooler fall months, and the TOMS style is both comfortable and versatile.  Of course, their "One for One" mission (with every pair of shoes purchased, TOMS gives a new pair of shoes to a child in need) is amazing too and reason in itself to support TOMS.  Then I also realized that they make BABY TOMS!  They are basically the cutest footwear you will ever see, but I did have trouble committing to a purchase when Harper is at an age where she is growing out of her clothes faster than I can possibly keep up with.  SO...you can imagine how thrilled I was to find a pair of pink baby TOMS at my local kids' consignment shop just this week, and (wonder of all wonders) they were actually in Harper's size.  How can you not just melt when you see itty bitty TOMS?  Really now.

Frenzy, $27
by Chanel
Chanel Frenzy: Yes, while it's true that I am constantly in a state of Chanel frenzy, what I'm actually referring to Frenzy with a capital "F," from Chanel's Fall 2012 nail color line.  My sister gave me a bottle for a hostess gift at Thanksgiving, and it instantly became my favorite neutral.  Move over, Sand Tropez!  While the Essie color formerly occupied by number one spot, Frenzy bumped it down a notch.  The stony khaki color accomplishes a feat that every neutral should: it is visible yet nude.  That is to say, this shade of smokey greyish beige (dare I say, greige?)packs enough punch that it doesn't wash you out, even in the doldrums of winter, but it also won't compete with other colors you might be wearing on a given day.  As a neutral, I personally feel that it can be worn regardless of the season, and if you're going to shell out the big bucks for a Chanel polish, I think that is an important qualifier.

Tumbled Leather Reva Ballet Flat
in party fuschia, $235
by Tory Burch
Reva Flat: As I've already confessed, since having my baby, I have Come Unheeled in more ways than one.  Most often, I mean this literally, as my heels have been sadly neglected for the last 14 months.  It's basically an issue of practicality, since I find it easier to carry Harper and all her gear when I haven't added an extra four inches.  I also took a new job last spring and spend a lot of my work day walking between buildings on an urban campus, which is also a lot easier to do in flats.  All that being said, I have finally discovered for myself why Tory Burch's Reva Flat is so wildly popular.  I could truly wear this shoe everyday.  It is cute yet completely comfortable, not to mention Tory is always coming out with new, irresistible color options.  On that note, I'm loving the Reva in party fuschia, a bold pink patent leather that is just perfect for spring.  And also Valentine's Day (calling all cupids!).

Delightful GM, $1,340
by Louis Vuitton
Louis: I am turning 30 this year (gasp!).  For some time now, it has been my plan to own the Chanel Grand Shopper by the time I turned 30.  In the event that it didn't happen, plan B was to purchase the Chanel Grand Shopper for myself on my 30th birthday.  I mean, birthday at Chanel?  That hardly sounds bad!  Unfortunately, Chanel isn't exactly in the budget right now.  Sigh.  Still, I have my heart set on a fancy new bag for my fancy new decade...  Fortunately, there is no shortage of gorgeous bags in the world, and that is precisely where Louis comes in.  I discovered Louis Vuitton's Delightful GM a couple of years ago, and it definitely made an impression.  First of all, it's HUGE.  Forget Mary Poppins' bag, this one can fit way more stuff--and that's totally key for a girl on the go.  Of course, the monogram canvas is classic, perhaps even a staple in the fashion community, but the I like the way the slouchy hobo style gives this particular bag a more relaxed vibe.  The one tiny downside is that the Delightful GM isn't customizable with Louis' Mon Monogram Collection, but that's so not a deal-breaker.  With eight months to go until my big birthday, I'm now on the search for a fairy godmother, preferably one with an in at Louis Vuitton, but in the meantime, I'll have to start saving.

Sperry Top Sider for J. Crew
in platinum gold, $98
Gold Topsiders: I've been debating the purchase of gold Sperrys for well over two years now.  Clearly, I have problems with indecision, but when I received some J. Crew gift credit over the Christmas holiday, I knew the time to hesitate was through.  I am happy to report that I'm now the proud owner of my very own shiny, metallic Sperrys.  While I won't be able to wear them for several more months, in the meantime, they are sitting happily in my closet, just the golden beacon of light that I need to make it through the long, cold winter.  Like I said, I'm turning 30 this year so I need to make it a golden one.

Say Yes "Yes" Necklace, $78
by Kate Spade
Kate Spade Wedding: My college bff is getting married this spring so I have lately been obsessing over Kate Spade's Wedding Belles collection with her mind.  Whether for the bride, bridesmaids, or honeymoon, each item is pretty and timeless, with a little bit of whimsy. People say that a woman never looks more beautiful as the day she is married, and I love the way Kate Spade's collection celebrates this very idea of the bride as a beautiful wedding belle.  With pure sentiments like this "Yes" necklace, sacred vows are honored in a fashionably sweet way.  Yay for goin' to the chapel!

Rolled Slim in Lily Dot, $198
from Marc by Marc Jacobs
Available at Bloomingdales
Polka Dot: I inherited my affinity for patterns and prints from my mother, who especially loves polka dots.  Really though, who doesn't?  So I was immediately attracted to these fun jeans from Marc by Marc Jacobs.  Here, the inherent femininity of a pretty little polka dot is turned on its nose with fading and distressing.  I love the resulting casual but girly aesthetic, perfect for spring and summer.  Now I just need them to go on sale!

Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20- Illuminating
in warm radiance, $43
by Laura Mercier
Available at Sephora

Fake Flawless Skin: I received a free sample of Laura Mercier's Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 from Sephora a while back.  I threw it in my make-up bag and didn't think much more about it...until my early sleepless nights with a new baby had me looking a little less than rested.  Without an under-eye concealer handy, I thought I might use it as a stand-in.  Now I am loving it!  Admittedly, it is not supposed to be used as under-eye concealer.  However, I tend to shy away from heavy or more pronounced cosmetic products, which concealers often are, and so this tinted moisturizer is much more my speed.  As a lightweight, sheer foundation with a hint of sheen and color, I've found that it masks any under-eye shadows and instead gives my eyes a fresh, almost dewy look.  Of course, I'm sure it also works fabulously when applied as intended, as a tinted allover facial moisturizer.  I haven't actually tried that yet, but I'll be sure to report back if I do.

Pyramid Stud Silicone Case
in blazer blue, $45
by Tory Burch
Tech Accessories: My beloved Kate Spade iPhone case looks like it has seen better days (it has) so I have recently been on a request to find a replacement.  After recently finding myself on the losing end of a heated Ebay bidding war for the case I really wanted and couldn't find anywhere, I had to accept that maybe there were other fish in the sea.  I'm happy to report that there are!  I came across this Pyramid Silicone Stud case by Tory Burch online the other day, and it might be just the fish I'm looking for.  As I've said before, I'm a sucker for studs and spikes so I'm loving their very practical manifestation here.  This case is available in "blazer blue" and "royal fuschia."  While I'm typically more of an everymustbepink type of girl, I'm actually feeling drawn to the blue.  I feel like the "blazer blue" (navy) gives the studs a more subtle, dignified feel, perfect for the New Year and a more grown-up me.

Keeper Chambray Shirt, $78
by J. Crew
Chambray: My husband loves chambray, which is only further evidence that my born-and-bred California boy is becoming more of a New Englander with each passing day.  He has several chambray shirts, but up until recently, my personal chambray count was 0. So you can imagine how excited I was to unwrap one of his Christmas gifts to me and to discover my very own chambray shirt inside!  I am drawn to casual, effortless feel of chambray, but I also like that it can be dressed up by tucking it into a skirt.  About a month ago, I saw the cutest outfit on display in the J. Crew window, where the chambray shirt was tucked into a red and green plaid skirt and paired with black tights and a statement necklace.  Now I just need to complete the rest of that outfit!

Cultured Pearl Earrings, $925
by Tiffany & Co.
Tiffany Pearls: I received my Tiffany pearl earrings from my mother when I was in college, and I have worn them pretty much everyday since.  Pearls are, of course, timeless and elegant, and there isn't an outfit on the planet that doesn't look better with pearls.  Recently, however, I have begun to feel like my pearls need a new look.  I had been debating going one size bigger than the pearls I already have--that is, until I saw Tiffany's cultured pearl earrings.  A stunning adaptation of the traditional pearl look, these earrings are 18k white gold with cultured pearls and round brilliant diamonds.  They are nothing short of breathtaking, and if I were so lucky as to have these, I feel that I can quite honestly say I would never need another pair of earrings again.

So there you have it.  As you can see, while I'm making every attempt to be practical these days, I simply can't help but dream big.  However, I would feel remiss if I didn't mention how blessed I feel for all the things I already have.  In fact, just this morning, when I mentioned the handbag on my wishlist, my husband reminded me that I don't need a handbag to feel like I have arrived--that the little girl asleep in the backseat of the car during our conversation was evidence of how far I have come in life.  While I don't like conceding, he was/is undeniably right.  I have so much to be grateful for, and I feel lucky for that everyday.  BUT...I still want my Louis bag.  And on that note, until next time, happy New Year--and happy shopping!

Polar: The New White

White denim has been all the rage for the last few summers, and I can totally see why.  Nothing compliments a good tan like a crisp white, and white jeans lend themselves fabulously to a nautical look, and can be dressed up or down...  Clearly, the list goes on!  Yet, I have yet to purchase a pair of my own.  So why would a self-proclaimed fashionista intentionally deprive herself of such a blatant trend?  The truth is, I am far too accident prone to wear that much white.  Seriously, on days when I wear a white tee-shirt or top, I undoubtedly spill something on myself so white pants--well, you get the picture.  But as a fortune cookie once told me, all is never lost.

Mid-Rise Skinny Leg in Polar, $180
by J Brand

Allow me to introduce you to polar, the newest wash of J Brand's Mid-Rise Skinny Leg.  Think: polar bear.  They are not a perfect white, but in that they are perfect.  This broken-in icy white is the ideal wash for the wannabe-white-denim-wearing girl on the go.  The moment I saw them, I knew I had to have them.  If I had a signature denim, J Brand's mid-rise skinny leg would be it so the polar wash was essentially the cherry on top.  The worn, textured white means that I won't be afraid of wearing them out and about, and maybe even getting a little dirty (I'm sorry, but how do you white denim lovers manage to stay so pristine?).  Contrast stitching complements the perfectly imperfect white, but the beauty is that--like your standard white denim--polar is perfect for spring and summer.  Dearest fashionista friends, all the signs are there: this is the new white.

Psst...  For you Boston area local fashionistas, you can get your very own polar J Brands at Belmont's fabulous boutique, Bessie Blue.  Check out their website for store hours and directions!

Episode 6: Jeans For Dress-Up

When I was growing up, there was a distinct separation between casual clothes and dress-up clothes.  Dress-up clothes were for church, parties, airplanes (remember those days?), and weddings or funerals, whereas casual clothes were for pretty much all other occasions.  This separation was just as important as cardinal fashion rules like wearing a slip under a skirt or no white after labor day.  In fact, even into my angsty teenage years, I pretty much subscribed to this wardrobe dichotomy.  It wasn't until I moved to LA for college that my staunch New England fashion preconceptions loosened a bit, and I discovered there was an entire style spectrum in between casual and dress-up.  During my four year stint in the City of Angels, I learned a lot about fashion--not to mention, life in general--but perhaps the most important fashion message was that you can (and should) wear jeans for dress-up, and it is for this revelation that I will be eternally thankful to my one-time home of LA.

Some ponder important life questions like: what came first, the chicken or the egg?  As for me, I wonder whether jeans for dress-up inspired the designer denim fad (a trend that is happily alive and well today) or if the designer denim fad made it okay to wear denim to dinner and a movie?  Regardless, I learned about both during my undergraduate years, and my wardrobe has never been the same.  I hoard designer denim like, well, a hoarder--and there have even been times when my husband has had to set some harsh limits for me, like no more jeans until I get rid of some that I already have (sigh).  But I digress...

The beauty of jeans for dress-up is that they are as stylish as they are comfortable, and when I'm wearing my favorite denim, I never feel more like myself--which is precisely how any girl wants to feel, regardless of the occasion.  Interestingly enough, denim has a spectrum in and of itself.  That is to say, there are some pairs of jeans that I reserve for casual wear and others that are more appropriate for going out.  The difference between the two, of course, is further reinforced by footwear choice: Uggs or heeled leather boots, Converse or Louboutins, flip flops or flats, and so on.

But don't get me wrong.  Now that I'm all grown up, I love playing dress-up just as much--if not more--than I did when I was a little girl.  But with the exception of church, the really fancy occasions are few and far between, and the occasions that call for just a little something special are far more frequent.  And this is how I rationalize all the jeans that I already own--and all that I still want to buy...  So thank you, LA LA Land, for teaching me about casual couture and the absolute necessity of jeans for dress-up.  My fashion sensibilities will be forever indebted.

Pants That Pop!

Warning: this post is not for the faint of heart--or at the very least, if you're afraid of color, consider yourself warned. In past posts, I've raved about the glories of color, suggesting a little pop(!) of color for your nails or perhaps your shoes. But today is different; today we're going all out with pants that really pop!

Isn't color exactly what you need on this snowy APRIL day? J Brand to the rescue. Their new line of Haute Hues is where bold color meets go-to classic. Made of Japanese luxe twill and fitted from hip to ankle with a slightly higher-rise, the 811 Mid-Rise Skinny Leg is available in pretty much every color of the rainbow. My favorites have to be the "brights"--bright red, bright royal, bright yellow, and bright fuchsia. I mean, go bold or go home. However, if you're a more delicate flower who prefers pastels for spring, you can always opt for far less hue with the "pales"--pale pink, pale yellow, and pale blue. Now you can have your color--and wear it too!

Hippie Chic for Spring

Like many of you out there, I feel that I have spent the winter--and perhaps even the better part of the fall--in skinny jeans. Seasonally speaking, they're more convenient for two reasons: (1) they can be tucked effortlessly into boots and (2) you never run the risk of the hem dragging along the ground and making you cold and wet. Of course, these aren't the only reasons that I love skinny jeans. Rather, their shape is inherently versatile, streamlined, and sophisticated. Yet, with the dawn of spring--and in spite of some very non-springy snow flurries--I've found myself wanting more from my denim... After all, what better time to embrace your inner flower child and return to the bell bottom?

I have been on the hunt for a new pair of trusty bell bottoms for a couple of weeks now. After walking all over London and Paris last March, my go-to pair by Ernest Sewn (with an inseam that turned out to be a tad too lengthy to wear with Converse) are utterly chewed up and destroyed. While I may have my reasons for loving skinny jeans, I have just as many reasons to love the fun flare of a good bell bottom; namely, the fact that they drape perfectly over sneakers or flip-flops and are effortlessly (hippie) chic. So with this criteria in mind and a few hard-earned dollars in my checking account, I hit Bloomingdales last weekend...

As it turns out, I'm not the only flower child out there. Based solely on the selection in the denim department at Bloomingdales, I can say with confidence that hippie is haute this spring. Here is what I took to the dressing room with me:

1.) Babe Power Stretch Mid-Rise Bell Flare Jeans by J Brand: These comfy bells are made using J Brand's own power stretch denim, which is designed to contour the body in all the right places for an ultra-flattering silhouette that will retain its shape. I personally love the mid-rise fit for its smoothing effect, and it also means that I won't have to hike up my pants all the time. And not to play favorites, but I love the subtlety of all J Brand denim; there are never any glaring logos or contrived detailing, and these bells are no exception. Way to keep it classy, J Brand.

2.) Carrie Skinny Knee Wide Flare by True Religion: This new flare from True Religion offers a slim fit through the knee, before breaking at the calf into a wide flare. With a rise slightly higher than most True Religion jeans, I really like the overall look of the Carrie; this may be partly because of the "short-fuse medium" wash, which gives these jeans a broken-in look without trying so hard to be "pre-destroyed."

3.) Dani Stretch Flare by True Religion: Considered the "perfect fit for every body," these low rise flares are made with 2% spandex for the ultimate curve-hugging experience. Unlike the Carrie, these bells feature True Religion's signature diagonally cut side seam, meant to accentuate your curves. I was psyched to find these on the Bloomies sale rack, but as it turns out, I'm just not a huge fan of the diagonal seam; for whatever reason, I can't shake the feeling that my pants are all twisted.

4.) Bell Bottom Super Flare by 7 For All Mankind: With an exaggerated bell, these Sevens have a fun, bohemian appeal to them. The aptly titled "vintage California" wash manages to be both dark and soft, with just a touch of fading and distressing. These bells are fabulously comfortable, but as much as I love the concept of the super flare, in actuality it was just a little too much fabric for me.

Truth be told, it was a clear choice; the True Religion Carrie and J Brand Babe were the right bell bottoms for the job. As far as my budget, the fact that I was only in the market for one rather than two pairs of jeans turned out to be surprisingly non-problematic. As luck would have it, Bloomingdales was running a delicious denim deal this weekend, offering 15% off the purchase of one pair of designer denim, or 25% off the purchase of two pairs. Doubly lucky were the few Bloomies gift cards I had been saving for such an occasion. So, without breaking the bank, I have found myself ready for spring--and quite the little haute hippie too!

Barton; (2) Babe Power Stretch Mid-Rise Bell Flare Jeans in Classic Wash by J Brand $196, available at Bloomingdales (http://www.bloomingdales.com/); (3) Carrie Skinny Knee Wide Flare in Short Fuse Medium by True Religion $218, also available from Bloomingdales (in store only); (4) Dani Stretch Flare in Vera Cruz by True Religion $134 (on sale!), also from Bloomingdales (in store only); (5) Bell Bottom Super Flare in Vintage California by 7 for All Mankind $198, also available from Bloomingdales (in store only).

Fashion Etiquette For Birthdays & Beyond

Happy birthday to She's Come Unheeled! Today, to celebrate two years' of fabulous fashion adventures, I have undertaken perhaps one of the most ambitious tasks ever. I wasn't sure if it could be done, but thanks to your help, the convictions of a few well-known designers, and a few of my own opinions, I now present to you: one very, very long list of 100 fashion DOs and 100 fashion DON'Ts. Because it's my birthday--and I'll make lists if I want to!

100 Fashion DON'Ts...

1.) Show your underwear. Lines or straps or whales tails...yucky.
2.) Long French nails. Sorry, you look like a stripper.
3.) Long nails. Period.
4.) Roots. Get real--and get your hair did!
5.) Sandals and socks. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.
6.) Wear something you don't love because it is in. You should dress to feel your best, regardless of what the magazines say.
7.) Exactly match the color of every article of clothing that you're wearing.
8.) Wear a very casual jacket over a very dressy dress.
9.) Wear white after Labor Day. Etiquette is not dead!
10.) Wear your Uggs with your bikini. If it's warm enough to swim, it's not cold enough for Uggs. You look stupid.
11.) Starve yourself
12.) Be a label whore. Everyone who's anyone started out as no one.
13.) Wear rings on every finger.
14.) Be afraid of color.
15.) Over-do your foundation
16.) Too-short skirts
17.) Show too much skin. Leave a little something to the imagination!
18.) Exposed bra
19.) Tights as pants.
20.) Buy something with hopes it will look good later. Some things really do look better on a hanger, or on someone else.
21.) Dress too much of your age; trendiness does not stand the test of time.
22.) White stockings with black shoes
23.) Chipped nails. Keep it fresh or take it off!
24.) Sunglasses indoors or at night.
25.) Wear something you feel insecure in; if you're going to be pulling down your skirt, or continuously adjusting a strapless dress, it's best if you just wear something else.
26.) Too much bling during the day. Not even Serena van der Woodsen, a fictional character, can pull it off. Save your sequins for the club.
27.) Buy something if you cannot wear it with at least three items currently in your closet.
28.) Buy something you can’t figure out how to put on in the dressing room in less than 1 minute. Fashion shouldn't be that complicated.
29.) Buy single-use items (wedding dresses are an exception).
30.) Excessive animal print. It's not Halloween.
31.) Not dressing your age.
32.) Acid wash jeans
33.) Fanny packs
34.) Pants with elastic waists (with the exception of leggings--but be mindful of no. 19)
35.) White men's dress shirts with no undershirt
36.) Gold chains on men
37.) Feathered bangs
38.) Sweatpants that gather at the bottom
39.) Wear shoes that are exactly the same color as your pants. Yawn.
40.) Buy something on sale you wouldn't buy at full price.
41.) Over-do your perfume.
42.) Take style tips from the cast of Jersey Shore
43.) Wear it if you can't breathe in it--and dance in it!
44.) Don't get a high-maintenance haircut. Who has time?
45.) Wear shoes that you can't walk properly in--no matter how fabulous they are.
46.) Disguise your figure with loose, oversized clothing. According to Tim Gunn, The more volume your clothing has, the more volume you appear to have.
47.) Orange-y pantyhose. The point is to match your skin tone, people!
48.) Nude hosiery with open-toed shoes.
49.) Denim on denim
50.) Overaccessorizing. Take one thing off before you leave the house.
51.) The golfing look, worn off the course
52.) Worn-out flip flops.
53.) The school girl look, if you're not a school girl.
54.) Shoulder pads
55.) Stay with one hairstyle for too long. Give yourself the decade test.
56.) Take your hairstyle to the extreme: too long, too short, too light, too dark...
57.) Be afraid to experiment with fun, playful colors when you get your mani/pedi
58.) Over-tweezed eyebrows
59.) Cat-eye make-up, circa Amy Winehouse
60.) Charge something you really can't afford to your credit card and tell yourself, "I'll pay it off later."
61.) Split-toed shoes. Camel toe, eeew.
62.) Smoking. Not only is it gross, but in all seriousness, lung cancer destroys families.
63.) At-home dye jobs
64.) Visible Peds
65.) Unopened vents. Don't forget to snip that pesky string on jackets, blazers, and skirts! Embarrassing--and you run the risk of ripping your garment when you take a large step or reach for something on the top pantry shelf.
66.) A gaping blouse. A button popping off onto the conference table? So not professional.
67.) Low ankle boots with cropped pants.
68.) Having a fashion muse like Lindsay Lohan or J-Woww.
69.) Baring your midriff. You are not a teen pop sensation. Sorry.
70.) Think that just because a high-end designer made it, it's a "DO."
71.) Hammer pants
72.) Wear all black to yoga. Lulu invented purple pants for a reason!*
73.) Heart-shaped sunglasses. Unless you're under the age of 10.
74.) Penciled-in brows
75.) Heavily lined lips. Unless you're a showgirl, your lip liner should blend with your lip color.
76.) Overmoisturize. While some might tell you that you can't have too much of a good thing, that rule of thumb doesn't apply when it comes to a clear complexion. Heavy creams can create a barrier on the surface of your face and keep your skin from absorbing moisture.
77.) Ed Hardy.
78.) Invest too much in trendy pieces. That's what H&M is for.
79.) Wear medicated lip balms. True, the tingle can be intoxicating, but these formulas won’t protect your pout; they’ll only make it drier. Look for lip balms or glosses with ingredients like shea butter and beeswax instead, both of which coat your lips with a layer that helps protect and nourish.
80.) Be a copycat. Instead, take inspiration from others and then make it your own.
81.) Keep your wellies on all day at work. Change into your heels or good flats.
82.) Overly distressed jeans are, well, distressing.
83.) Over-doing the smokey eye
84.) A smokey eye during the day
85.) Baggy jeans
86.) Designer knock-offs
87.) Hairy pits. Sorry, but someone had to say it.
88.) Sleep in your make-up. Let your skin breathe.
89.) Matchy matchy tracksuits. Unless you're Jane Lynch.
90.) Bib necklaces. Statement jewelry is one thing, but if the word "bib" appears anywhere in the name, take a pass.
91.) Visors
92.) Tapered pants
93.) Sleeveless high-necked blouses. If it's warm enough to go sleeveless, what do you need the high neck for?
94.) Scrunchies
95.) Pantyhose with sling-backs or mules.
96.) Too much fringe. When it comes to fringe--whether it be on a dress, a handbag, whatever--less is always more.
97.) Mullets--on guys or girls.
98.) Jumpsuits
99.) Forget to slice and dice the bottoms of your heels. A slippery surface plus sky-high heels spells inevitable disaster--not to mention embarrassment.
100.) Be insecure. Love yourself.

100 Fashion DOs...

1.) Invest in a really good pair of black high-heeled Mary Janes. Fortunately, they are not an urban shoe myth.
2.) Brightly colored rainboots. They will make rainy days--and your wardrobe--so much more interesting.
3.) Learn how to walk properly in heels.
4.) Own several LBDs.
5.) Pearls
6.) Wear your husband's t-shirts to bed.
7.) Wear suits without stockings.
8.) Wear navy with black (or brown).
9.) Wear jeans that fit (ie not too tight, not too baggy).
10.) Mix patterns
11.) Find a work-out you love (or don't hate).
12.) A classic trench.
13.) Dress for the weather.
14.) Splurge on a handbag you love
15.) Dress for your body type. Bikinis aren't the only cute bathing suits out there.
16.) Wear sunblock
17.) Red lipstick
18.) Dress up with a cocktail ring.
19.) Own a go-to pair of flats. You never know when you might have to run from the paparazzi--or to catch a bus.
20.) Dress your age. Every year on this earth is a gift.
21.) Patterned tights
22.) V-necks always make you look better, even if you're feeling kind of frumpy.
23.) Color, wherever it feels right.
24.) Spread good clothing karma! Clean out your closet and donate clothes you've outgrown, physically or emotionally, to an appropriate charity or clothing drive.
25.) Elegance and grace, both in what you wear and how you behave.
26.) Pedicures all year round
27.) When it comes to sunglasses, bigger really is better.
28.) Have a fashion failsafe that makes you feel good about your body and yourself for those off days.
29.) Before getting dressed in the morning, visualize your overall look.
30.) Shop a range of price points. There's no better match than a thrift store tee with a pair of designer jeans.
31.) Be brave! The trend has to start somewhere.
32.) Invest in timeless classics.
33.) Buy clothing that fits your lifestyle. If you spend your 9-5 in the office, splurge on a well made suit or an amazing pair of heels instead of blowing your paycheck on another pair of designer jeans.
34.) Animal print--in moderation--can add a fun pop! of pattern to any outfit.
35.) Retro party dresses
36.) Showcase one or two bright colors or one loud piece of jewelry instead of wearing the whole shiny rainbow.
37.) Carefully weigh your options...and then choose what will make you strut into a room like you own it.
38.) Ignore size. Bottom line: clothes that fit properly look better so don't get fixated on the numbers.
39.) Try it on. It's all about the mirror, not the hanger. Hello, that's what the dressing rooms are there for!
40.) Opt for pearls and a ponytail if you simply don't have time for a shower.
41.) Keep emergency bobby pins, mascara, and lip gloss in your purse.
44.) Dress your best. In the words of Coco Chanel, I don't understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little--if only out of politeness. And then, you never know, maybe that's the day she has a date with destiny. And it's best to be as pretty as possible for destiny.
45.) Ask yourself, "What would Jackie do?"
46.) Buy quality, not quantity.
47.) Wear head-to-toe black if you don't have a lot of time to get ready. It is universally chic.
48.) Always wear a good bra. It will make any top fit better.
49.) Make your belt mean something to your outfit. It's not there just to hold your pants up.
50.) Smile
51.) Always check your backside in the mirror before you head out. Everything that you care about showing or not showing from the front deserves the same amount of attention from the back.
52.) Define your waistline.
53.) Think about proportion.
54.) Fishnets, in neutrals and a fine weave. They are sexy without looking sleazy.
55.) Bright, gauzy scarves
56.) Balance your accessories. For example, if you have a scarf tied to one side, wear your bracelets on the opposite arm.
57.) White denim
58.) Opt for brightly colored or patterned flats. If they match nothing, it means they match everything.
59.) Invest in a high-quality flat iron.
60.) The perfect hem hits the top of the knee or an inch above—no higher.
61.) T-shirts: a soft, fitted cotton tee always works.
62.) Nude heels
63.) Understated cat-eye make-up
64.) Save your hard-earned cash to buy a really special splurge item
65.) Having a fashion muse like Jackie Onassis or Marilyn Monroe.
66.) Locate a really good tailor. Your hems--and your wardrobe in general--will thank you.
67.) Buying a shoe you love in every color.
68.) Keep it classy. You never want to try to ‘get away’ with anything, says Lizzie Post of the Emily Post Institute.
69.) Trust in the opinions of a few good friends. If your friends are telling you that those pants aren't "so flattering," they're just trying to be nice.
70.) Dress for the part.
71.) Unruly curls. Embrace what your mama gave you!
72.) Get your H2O! Drinking 64 ounces of water daily is essential for a healthy complexion because it flushes out toxins and keeps your insides running efficiently.
73.) Moisturize in the PM. There’s evidence that skin-cell regeneration is slightly faster at night than during the day, so take advantage of your skin’s receptiveness and don’t skimp on overnight hydration.
74.) Kate Spade
75.) Treat yourself to a facial once per season.
76.) Opt for SPF.
77.) Layer
78.) Maxi dresses
79.) Plaid
80.) Take inspiration from vintage trends.
81.) Opt for a subtle smokey eye to add instant glamour to any evening outfit.
82.) Military inspired fashion
83.) Steal your husband's watch
84.) Pea coats
85.) Shirtdresses
86.) Opt for leggings if you're questioning the appropriateness of your hemline
87.) Faux fur
88.) Get your beauty sleep. No girl wants/needs to hear "You look tired" from well-meaning--albeit entirely clueless--coworkers first thing in the morning.
89.) Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.
90.) Side-swept bangs
91.) Glasses. Geek is chic!
92.) Have a signature scent.
93.) Rose-gold jewelry. It looks amazing on bold necklaces and oversize watches, and it's also flattering to every skin tone.
94.) Wear camo. In moderation.
95.) Nautical-inspired fashion
96.) Own multiple pairs of boots. The possibilities are endless--riding boots, ankle boots, heeled, flat--and each style lends itself to a different look.
97.) Diamonds. Haven't you heard?--They're a girl's best friend.
98.) Leather bomber jackets
99.) Second-day hair
100.) Be confident. There is absolutely no substitute for knowing you look amazing.

So there you have it--all the DOs and DON'Ts a fashionista could ever ask for! Thanks to all of you who contributed your style savvy--and a special thank you for reading and supporting She's Come Unheeled over the past two years. Cheers to another two years of fashion adventures!

XOXO
Lolly

*My beloved Johanna shared this "don't" with me, and I confess that I have worn black to yoga many times... Apparently even fashionistas make style blunders from time to time. Looks like it's time to add some color to my workout!

Crush On This...

Valentine's Day may still be a month away, but it's never to early to start crushing. Especially when the crush in question is Crush Boutique, a coveted Charles Street fashion destination. When I first stumbled upon the garden level boutique after it opened in 2007, I felt as though I had discovered a hidden gem (literally--as it's partially hidden from the street). The cozy store is home to bold designs, bright colors, and boho/blinged out accessories that you'd be foolish not to crush on.

Like my personal style, my track record at Crush is all over the place, with past purchases ranging from chunky bracelets, to a preppy plaid dress, a hippie chic red peasant top, and dash of designer denim... However, on my most recent shopping excursion, I fell for a more subtle item: a ridiculously soft, burn-out tee in a grey-green that could've been custom made for me (it wasn't). Chatting with store co-owner Rebecca Penner, I learned that Crush had recently received their own branding, and said tee-shirt was just one example. Let me assure you, these girls know their stuff! The tee-shirt had me at hello, but I wasn't in the mood to try it on so Rebecca explained the fit and sizing of their line and suggested wearing my tee under a boyfriend blazer with a pair of heels to dress it up. Priced around $40, it was too versatile (and too soft!!) to turn down. Oh, and did I mention the customer service?

By now, you may be tempted to venture out into the elements in search of your own crush-worthy purchase, but with nearly two feet of snow slamming Boston today, there's no need to go all kamikaze snow bunny! Rather, the girls at Crush have made it easy to stay warm and fashionable with Crush online, their online store that boasts "one-of a kind accessories and unique pieces" that can be yours with the mere click of a mouse. But whenever the snow does finally stop, make some room in your schedule for a Charles Street fashion outing. After all, Valentine's Day is just a month away, and you'll want to be sure that you're looking crush-worthy too...

Fall Fashion Preview: Military Madness

With the hot summer days dragging, what has kept me going lately is...the air conditioning (sad but true). So in order to preserve my sanity and maintain my priorities (fashion!), I've been doing a bit of wishful thinking and looking ahead to fall. I have to tell you, the fashion forecast will make you mad for military--and I mean that in the best way possible. This fall, military chic will be everywhere, and the designers we know and love have truly outdone themselves. So without further ado, how about a little sneak peek?

It's better in leather: Probably my favorite fall item so far is the Heirloom Arturo jacket; not surprisingly, it's also amongst the latest and greatest from one of my favorite designers, Diane von Furstenberg. And DvF nails every detail of this military-inspired leather jacket, from its commanding structure to the eight brass buttons down the front. If I told you I salivated a little when I first laid eyes on this quintessential statement piece, would you judge me?

A woman in uniform? Don't mind if I do! Especially when the uniform in question is a classic army green, conjuring an "army surplus" aesthetic that is as functional as it is edgy. Made of a comfortable stretch cotton to boot, this dress features an off-center zipper, structured collar, and drawstring tie waist that accentuates the feminine elements of military chic.

Take it literally: Not that I needed another reason to anxiously anticipate the fall collections, but my love of all things camo print has been fully disclosed countless times before. Once again, the key to camo is balance; because the print is so bold in and of itself, it's most effective (and most high fashion) when applied to classic looks. For precisely this reason, I'm in love with these camo print flats from Michael Kors' KORS collection. The traditional ballet flat style gets a fierce makeover, with a camouflage printed leather upper that will add a hint of military madness to any outfit. I'm thinking: these flats, plus a pair of dark skinny jeans with a white tee= classic. Of course, if you're in the mood to spice up your 9 to 5, why not wear them with a basic yet elegant black suit?

The best part of this fashion forecast? There's SO much more to see--and if you can't hardly wait, thanks to the miracle of pre-sales, some of these style goodies are available now. But for those of you who can be patient, it will be worth the wait; military madness will soon abound. While some may lament the end of summer, believe me when I tell you that your wardrobe will be grateful for the upcoming season. After all, who needs a silver lining when you can have camo print, brass buttons, and army green?

Jeggings: The New Leggings

Like most fashionistas, I love leggings. However, my one problem with leggings is their lack of independence. Sure, they look fabulous under dresses, tunics, and long sweaters--but I have never seen them (effectively and/or fashionably) stand alone. I've seen girls try, and while I applaud their effort, fully exposed leggings look a liiiitle too much like tights. Have we learned nothing from Blair Waldorf? Please, ladies, tights are not pants!

Not surprisingly, the fashion drama doesn't end there. All I've ever wanted is a pair of thick leggings that could actually be worn as pants. Instead, faux denim--a serious faux pas--hit the runway last Spring. I'm relieved to report that the trend didn't stick, but the serious visceral reaction I experienced after watching Rock & Republic's acid-washed faux denim leggings come down the runway left me nauseous, traumatized--and very, very cautious about what would come next...

Jeggings! Part jeans, part leggings, and 100% fabulous. I admit, I was skeptical at first-- a reaction I credit to the post-traumatic stress of the faux denim leggings incident--but there is nothing NOT to love about this sophisticated hybrid! They fit even better than my favorite pair of skinny jeans (a true feat), yet they are infinitely more comfortable. As far as brands go, no one does it better than Paige Premium Denim. After the last few days, I think it's safe to say that I am officially obsessed with Paige's Glam Rock style in vinyl, an irresistible ink-black wash:

Day 1- Spent the day at bessie blue, where Ashley talked me into trying on the Glam Rock Jeggings by Paige. Hellooo, hotness! Bought them then and there.

Day 2- Went to brunch with Dallin. Wore my new Paige jeggings with Uggs, a vintage concert tee, and a long cashmere sweater: comfy AND cute!

Day 3- Dressing for the office made easy: jeggings, tall black boots, and a white long-sleeve tee underneath a grey, twill military-style blazer. Who needs business casual?

Day 4- laundry day!

Day 5- Another fabulous office outfit: jeggings, tall brown boots, a black Theory blazer, and classic Burberry plaid scarf. How's that for a power suit?

The obvious versatility of my amazing Paige jeggings has made them both a wardrobe staple and a fashion-forward force to be reckoned with. I can either wear them alone as jeans or underneath a long, drapey sweater as leggings. And with a comfort level equal or better than regular old leggings, who can argue with that? Not only are jeggings the new leggings, but they're quickly becoming the new jeans too! Clearly, there is no question about who's wearing the pants in this relationship.

Psst: If you're local, you can get your very own pair of Glam Rock Leggings by Paige Premium denim from bessie blue at 21 Leonard Street in Belmont.

Angry Music, Vampires, & New England--Oh My! An Ode to Black

Lately, I'm all about black. Black clothes are pretty much my uniform at work, black nails have become a part of my identity, a light smokey eye has taken over my cosmetic repertoire, and even my hair is black now. I love black for being simultaneously functional, chic, and totally classic.

So what's the deal? Have I gone emo? Am I a bit too obsessed with vampires? Maybe there's a little too much angry music on my iPod? My mother will tell you it's New England. When she and my Daddy moved back to Boston after living in LA for years, she said that her technicolor sunny California wardrobe stood out like a sore thumb against the black and grey New England background. So maybe that's it--maybe I'm a little too New England...

Whatever the reason, black is the new black--at least for me. So as an ode to the color I so dearly love and obsess over, I thought I would share some of my favorite black possessions with you. Some are old, some are new--but none are borrowed and NONE are blue!

Black Tee. Okay, let's rewind to the part about how I might be a little too obsessed with vampires: it's true. But can we also talk about what an amaaazing husband I have, considering that he purchased this tee for me, despite my competing affections for the fictitious and fiercely handsome pale face? Is it so wrong to love them equally?

Black Nails. French manicures are soooo last year! Like a little black dress (LBD!), black nails are classic. Whether you opt for Chimney Sweep or Black Satin, rest assured that your nails will work for day or night, work or play. Just make sure you keep your nails short and square; we don't need to get all creature from the black lagoon or anything.

Black Jeans. My office has a no denim rule. I know, right?--so unfair! The kicker is that my jeans are some of the nicest things I own! Yet, I have found that it's possible to bend the rules with black jeans, and my pair of black Joe's Jeans with their tasteful cigarette leg is my favorite way to go. Am I going to get totally nailed by putting this confession on the internet? Likely. But for the sake of you fashionistas living in a no-denim-by-day world out there, I'll take the hit.

Black Shoes. I received my first pair of Chucks as a child, but we were reacquainted during college when a friend gave me a pair (adult-sized this time) for my birthday--and it's been a love affair ever since. Unlike Kristen Stewart, I never wear them with a party dress--nor do I wear them to work (some rules can neither be bent nor broken). But every other time and place is fair game. Like most black apparel, they are comfortable, classic, and fabulous.

Black Hoodie. Sometimes a fashionista just wants to be cozy (hello, lolly.brand!), and nothing is more cozy than a hoodie. For years now, my black hoodie and I have been inseparable. Granted, my "black hoodie" is more like a series of different black hoodies that have been used, abused, and worn out. My new favorite brand for cozy-cozies is Alternative Apparel (not to be confused with American Apparel), AND if you're loving this fabulous Rocky style hoodie, then just wait until it has the skater graphic from brand.L by lolly.brand on it!* Coming soon...

Painting my nails in preparation for a friend's Christmas party a couple of weeks ago, my adorable husband remarked that black wasn't exactly the most festive choice. Nonetheless, it certainly looked fierce with my black and gold Yansi Fugel dress! What can I say? I guess I'm just happy being a black sheep--and loving angry music, vampires, and New England (obvi).

See you next year, dearest fashionista friends! I'll be the one wearing black...

XOXO,
Lolly

*Obviously, I'm ALL about shameless self-promotion, so let me just add this: brand.L skater hoodies will be available in January 2010--yay! Stay tuned at www.lollybrand.net for exclusive details. Plus, lolly.brand is now on Facebook; join the group by clicking here!
