Summer Things

With Memorial Day weekend come and gone and Boston temperatures over 90 degrees for three consecutive days this past week, I think it's fair to say that summer is here.  Some years, I feel like summer comes and goes without me having the chance to acknowledge or even properly appreciate it.  I resolve that this year will be different.  I have grand plans for beach days, delicious summer menus on the grill, and summer fashions.  Here are 5 of the things that I'm already excited about:

Glitter Nail Color
in Candy Shop, $19
by Deborah Lippmann
Available at Nordstrom

Nail care is a crucial part of the summer, and today I finally had the opportunity to get a much-needed mani/pedi.  Now I'm feeling far more summer-ready.  And speaking of summer nails, while I don't yet have this amazing nail lacquer from Deborah Lippmann in my collection, I'll stress the yet because I'm thinking it is a must.  Growing up, I was obsessed with the game Candy Land, particularly with the character Queen Frostine who I felt was my game character doppelganger.  This polish is like Candy Land for grown-ups, a light pink with candy colored glitter flecks throughout.  Let's be real, this is a party for your nails, and after finally seeing The Great Gatsby this weekend, I am ready for parties AND glitter.

Peach Bruschetta with Ricotta and Prosciutto
Recipe thanks to Williams-Sonoma

When I look at the Williams-Sonoma catalog, I genuinely want to be more domestic.  Of course, life always seems to get in the way, and we wind up eating quesadillas or cereal most nights.  Summer resolution?  I will make this peach bruschetta with ricotta and prosciutto.  According to WS, it involves 15 minutes of prep and 15 minutes of cook-time.  Now that is a timeline I can commit to!  Plus, doesn't this picture make you want it to eat it, like NOW?  Here's the recipe so you can:

Ingredients:
1/3 cup balsamic vinegar
4 slices country-style bread, each about 1/2 inch thick
1/3 cup olive oil, plus more for drizzling
2 large peaches, pitted and each cut into 12 slices
6 Tbs. ricotta cheese, lightly seasoned with kosher salt
3 oz. thinly sliced prosciutto
1 1/2 oz. arugula
Maldon sea salt for sprinkling

Directions:
-In a small saucepan over medium heat, bring the vinegar to a simmer and simmer until reduced by half, 3 to 4 minutes. Let cool.
-Preheat a panini press on the “sear” setting according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Generously brush both sides of the bread slices with the 1/3 cup olive oil. Working in 2 batches, place the bread on the panini press, close the lid and lock the top of the press so the bread is not being compressed. Cook until browned on both sides, 2 to 3 minutes. Set aside.
-Working in 2 batches, arrange the peach slices on the panini press, close the lid and cook until the peaches are nicely marked on both sides, about 2 minutes.
-Spread 1 1/2 Tbs. cheese on each bread slice. Drape the prosciutto on top, dividing evenly, and top with the peach slices. Put the arugula in a small bowl and lightly drizzle with olive oil. Top the bruschetta with the arugula. Drizzle with the reduced vinegar and sprinkle with Maldon sea salt. Serve immediately. Serves 4.

Lounging poolside with my girl

Lounging poolside.  Okay, for us, that means Harper's little pool in our backyard.  On Friday afternoon (day 2 of aforementioned 90 degree temperatures), like most Bostonians, I was beyond hot.  Not even day 2 of ice cream treats offered sufficient cooling, and that's when you know you're in trouble.  So we decided it was time to break ground on our swimming pool--and obviously we went with the top-of-the-line kidney-shaped pool!  That's just how we roll in the Wilson family.  Seriously, sitting inside that tiny pool with my sweet girl was exactly what I needed.  I have a feeling it was perhaps the best summer investment ever made.  Oh, and Harper's watering can to go with it, of course.

Printed Tee-Shirt Dress
in Egyptian Turquoise, $35
by Diane von Furstenberg for babyGap
Wishes really do come true!  One of my favorite fashion icons, Diane von Furstenberg, did another limited collection for babyGap and Gap Kids this year.  Her Explorers Collection features graphic prints in bright, cheerful colors that are fun and youthful.  Obvi, I couldn't resist getting something for little H.  It was hard to pick just one, but Harper just had to have this printed tee-shirt dress.  Is it wrong to want one in my size too?

Lululemon hits the tennis court!  Until today I had NO idea that Lulu did tennis wear.  Fortunately, my super stylish friend, Aimee, filled me in--and how cute is this Hot Hitter Dress?!  I played tennis during my middle school years but haven't been on the tennis court since, and lately I have really been wanting to get back to it.  What appeals to me about tennis is that it is a sport you can play forever.  My grandmother played until she was in her late 70s; how great is that?  Of course, the fashion doesn't hurt either; who doesn't love tennis whites?  Especially from Lulu, with irresistible design coupled with amazing moisture-wicking, breathable fabric.  Now, to get back on the court...

Hot Hitter Dress in Aquamarine/White, $98
by Lululemon

The first official day of summer isn't until June 21, but it feels like summer is already upon us.  With my newly painted nails and fashion and culinary inspiration, now all I need is a tan!

More On Hippie Chic For Spring: The Maxi

Tall girls, rejoice! This spring and summer, long is in and maxi dresses and skirts abound. In my opinion, it's about time. Thigh-grazing hemlines are basically a tee-shirt for me so seeing lots and lots of length on the recent Fashion Week runways was more refreshing than I can say. And for a girl who loves a bit of boho glam, the maxi is an effortless way to embrace hippie chic this spring.

Having done my share of online window shopping this past weekend, I'm officially head over heels for the Chroma Reflections Maxi Dress from Anthropologie. Without getting too literal, this lovely dress seems to channel Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds, as a floral kaleidoscope blooms upon this delicate silk landscape by Edme & Esyltte. With pullover styling, gathered bell sleeves, and a smocked waistline, perhaps its best characteristic--second to elegance--is ease. And to be clear, I'm talking throw-on-this-dress-and-a-pair-of-Rainbows kind of ease. Unless, of course, you're the kind of hippie to go barefoot...

Fashion Etiquette For Birthdays & Beyond

Happy birthday to She's Come Unheeled! Today, to celebrate two years' of fabulous fashion adventures, I have undertaken perhaps one of the most ambitious tasks ever. I wasn't sure if it could be done, but thanks to your help, the convictions of a few well-known designers, and a few of my own opinions, I now present to you: one very, very long list of 100 fashion DOs and 100 fashion DON'Ts. Because it's my birthday--and I'll make lists if I want to!

100 Fashion DON'Ts...

1.) Show your underwear. Lines or straps or whales tails...yucky.
2.) Long French nails. Sorry, you look like a stripper.
3.) Long nails. Period.
4.) Roots. Get real--and get your hair did!
5.) Sandals and socks. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.
6.) Wear something you don't love because it is in. You should dress to feel your best, regardless of what the magazines say.
7.) Exactly match the color of every article of clothing that you're wearing.
8.) Wear a very casual jacket over a very dressy dress.
9.) Wear white after Labor Day. Etiquette is not dead!
10.) Wear your Uggs with your bikini. If it's warm enough to swim, it's not cold enough for Uggs. You look stupid.
11.) Starve yourself
12.) Be a label whore. Everyone who's anyone started out as no one.
13.) Wear rings on every finger.
14.) Be afraid of color.
15.) Over-do your foundation
16.) Too-short skirts
17.) Show too much skin. Leave a little something to the imagination!
18.) Exposed bra
19.) Tights as pants.
20.) Buy something with hopes it will look good later. Some things really do look better on a hanger, or on someone else.
21.) Dress too much of your age; trendiness does not stand the test of time.
22.) White stockings with black shoes
23.) Chipped nails. Keep it fresh or take it off!
24.) Sunglasses indoors or at night.
25.) Wear something you feel insecure in; if you're going to be pulling down your skirt, or continuously adjusting a strapless dress, it's best if you just wear something else.
26.) Too much bling during the day. Not even Serena van der Woodsen, a fictional character, can pull it off. Save your sequins for the club.
27.) Buy something if you cannot wear it with at least three items currently in your closet.
28.) Buy something you can’t figure out how to put on in the dressing room in less than 1 minute. Fashion shouldn't be that complicated.
29.) Buy single-use items (wedding dresses are an exception).
30.) Excessive animal print. It's not Halloween.
31.) Not dressing your age.
32.) Acid wash jeans
33.) Fanny packs
34.) Pants with elastic waists (with the exception of leggings--but be mindful of no. 19)
35.) White men's dress shirts with no undershirt
36.) Gold chains on men
37.) Feathered bangs
38.) Sweatpants that gather at the bottom
39.) Wear shoes that are exactly the same color as your pants. Yawn.
40.) Buy something on sale you wouldn't buy at full price.
41.) Over-do your perfume.
42.) Take style tips from the cast of Jersey Shore
43.) Wear it if you can't breathe in it--and dance in it!
44.) Don't get a high-maintenance haircut. Who has time?
45.) Wear shoes that you can't walk properly in--no matter how fabulous they are.
46.) Disguise your figure with loose, oversized clothing. According to Tim Gunn, The more volume your clothing has, the more volume you appear to have.
47.) Orange-y pantyhose. The point is to match your skin tone, people!
48.) Nude hosiery with open-toed shoes.
49.) Denim on denim
50.) Overaccessorizing. Take one thing off before you leave the house.
51.) The golfing look, worn off the course
52.) Worn-out flip flops.
53.) The school girl look, if you're not a school girl.
54.) Shoulder pads
55.) Stay with one hairstyle for too long. Give yourself the decade test.
56.) Take your hairstyle to the extreme: too long, too short, too light, too dark...
57.) Be afraid to experiment with fun, playful colors when you get your mani/pedi
58.) Over-tweezed eyebrows
59.) Cat-eye make-up, circa Amy Winehouse
60.) Charge something you really can't afford to your credit card and tell yourself, "I'll pay it off later."
61.) Split-toed shoes. Camel toe, eeew.
62.) Smoking. Not only is it gross, but in all seriousness, lung cancer destroys families.
63.) At-home dye jobs
64.) Visible Peds
65.) Unopened vents. Don't forget to snip that pesky string on jackets, blazers, and skirts! Embarrassing--and you run the risk of ripping your garment when you take a large step or reach for something on the top pantry shelf.
66.) A gaping blouse. A button popping off onto the conference table? So not professional.
67.) Low ankle boots with cropped pants.
68.) Having a fashion muse like Lindsay Lohan or J-Woww.
69.) Baring your midriff. You are not a teen pop sensation. Sorry.
70.) Think that just because a high-end designer made it, it's a "DO."
71.) Hammer pants
72.) Wear all black to yoga. Lulu invented purple pants for a reason!*
73.) Heart-shaped sunglasses. Unless you're under the age of 10.
74.) Penciled-in brows
75.) Heavily lined lips. Unless you're a showgirl, your lip liner should blend with your lip color.
76.) Overmoisturize. While some might tell you that you can't have too much of a good thing, that rule of thumb doesn't apply when it comes to a clear complexion. Heavy creams can create a barrier on the surface of your face and keep your skin from absorbing moisture.
77.) Ed Hardy.
78.) Invest too much in trendy pieces. That's what H&M is for.
79.) Wear medicated lip balms. True, the tingle can be intoxicating, but these formulas won’t protect your pout; they’ll only make it drier. Look for lip balms or glosses with ingredients like shea butter and beeswax instead, both of which coat your lips with a layer that helps protect and nourish.
80.) Be a copycat. Instead, take inspiration from others and then make it your own.
81.) Keep your wellies on all day at work. Change into your heels or good flats.
82.) Overly distressed jeans are, well, distressing.
83.) Over-doing the smokey eye
84.) A smokey eye during the day
85.) Baggy jeans
86.) Designer knock-offs
87.) Hairy pits. Sorry, but someone had to say it.
88.) Sleep in your make-up. Let your skin breathe.
89.) Matchy matchy tracksuits. Unless you're Jane Lynch.
90.) Bib necklaces. Statement jewelry is one thing, but if the word "bib" appears anywhere in the name, take a pass.
91.) Visors
92.) Tapered pants
93.) Sleeveless high-necked blouses. If it's warm enough to go sleeveless, what do you need the high neck for?
94.) Scrunchies
95.) Pantyhose with sling-backs or mules.
96.) Too much fringe. When it comes to fringe--whether it be on a dress, a handbag, whatever--less is always more.
97.) Mullets--on guys or girls.
98.) Jumpsuits
99.) Forget to slice and dice the bottoms of your heels. A slippery surface plus sky-high heels spells inevitable disaster--not to mention embarrassment.
100.) Be insecure. Love yourself.

100 Fashion DOs...

1.) Invest in a really good pair of black high-heeled Mary Janes. Fortunately, they are not an urban shoe myth.
2.) Brightly colored rainboots. They will make rainy days--and your wardrobe--so much more interesting.
3.) Learn how to walk properly in heels.
4.) Own several LBDs.
5.) Pearls
6.) Wear your husband's t-shirts to bed.
7.) Wear suits without stockings.
8.) Wear navy with black (or brown).
9.) Wear jeans that fit (ie not too tight, not too baggy).
10.) Mix patterns
11.) Find a work-out you love (or don't hate).
12.) A classic trench.
13.) Dress for the weather.
14.) Splurge on a handbag you love
15.) Dress for your body type. Bikinis aren't the only cute bathing suits out there.
16.) Wear sunblock
17.) Red lipstick
18.) Dress up with a cocktail ring.
19.) Own a go-to pair of flats. You never know when you might have to run from the paparazzi--or to catch a bus.
20.) Dress your age. Every year on this earth is a gift.
21.) Patterned tights
22.) V-necks always make you look better, even if you're feeling kind of frumpy.
23.) Color, wherever it feels right.
24.) Spread good clothing karma! Clean out your closet and donate clothes you've outgrown, physically or emotionally, to an appropriate charity or clothing drive.
25.) Elegance and grace, both in what you wear and how you behave.
26.) Pedicures all year round
27.) When it comes to sunglasses, bigger really is better.
28.) Have a fashion failsafe that makes you feel good about your body and yourself for those off days.
29.) Before getting dressed in the morning, visualize your overall look.
30.) Shop a range of price points. There's no better match than a thrift store tee with a pair of designer jeans.
31.) Be brave! The trend has to start somewhere.
32.) Invest in timeless classics.
33.) Buy clothing that fits your lifestyle. If you spend your 9-5 in the office, splurge on a well made suit or an amazing pair of heels instead of blowing your paycheck on another pair of designer jeans.
34.) Animal print--in moderation--can add a fun pop! of pattern to any outfit.
35.) Retro party dresses
36.) Showcase one or two bright colors or one loud piece of jewelry instead of wearing the whole shiny rainbow.
37.) Carefully weigh your options...and then choose what will make you strut into a room like you own it.
38.) Ignore size. Bottom line: clothes that fit properly look better so don't get fixated on the numbers.
39.) Try it on. It's all about the mirror, not the hanger. Hello, that's what the dressing rooms are there for!
40.) Opt for pearls and a ponytail if you simply don't have time for a shower.
41.) Keep emergency bobby pins, mascara, and lip gloss in your purse.
44.) Dress your best. In the words of Coco Chanel, I don't understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little--if only out of politeness. And then, you never know, maybe that's the day she has a date with destiny. And it's best to be as pretty as possible for destiny.
45.) Ask yourself, "What would Jackie do?"
46.) Buy quality, not quantity.
47.) Wear head-to-toe black if you don't have a lot of time to get ready. It is universally chic.
48.) Always wear a good bra. It will make any top fit better.
49.) Make your belt mean something to your outfit. It's not there just to hold your pants up.
50.) Smile
51.) Always check your backside in the mirror before you head out. Everything that you care about showing or not showing from the front deserves the same amount of attention from the back.
52.) Define your waistline.
53.) Think about proportion.
54.) Fishnets, in neutrals and a fine weave. They are sexy without looking sleazy.
55.) Bright, gauzy scarves
56.) Balance your accessories. For example, if you have a scarf tied to one side, wear your bracelets on the opposite arm.
57.) White denim
58.) Opt for brightly colored or patterned flats. If they match nothing, it means they match everything.
59.) Invest in a high-quality flat iron.
60.) The perfect hem hits the top of the knee or an inch above—no higher.
61.) T-shirts: a soft, fitted cotton tee always works.
62.) Nude heels
63.) Understated cat-eye make-up
64.) Save your hard-earned cash to buy a really special splurge item
65.) Having a fashion muse like Jackie Onassis or Marilyn Monroe.
66.) Locate a really good tailor. Your hems--and your wardrobe in general--will thank you.
67.) Buying a shoe you love in every color.
68.) Keep it classy. You never want to try to ‘get away’ with anything, says Lizzie Post of the Emily Post Institute.
69.) Trust in the opinions of a few good friends. If your friends are telling you that those pants aren't "so flattering," they're just trying to be nice.
70.) Dress for the part.
71.) Unruly curls. Embrace what your mama gave you!
72.) Get your H2O! Drinking 64 ounces of water daily is essential for a healthy complexion because it flushes out toxins and keeps your insides running efficiently.
73.) Moisturize in the PM. There’s evidence that skin-cell regeneration is slightly faster at night than during the day, so take advantage of your skin’s receptiveness and don’t skimp on overnight hydration.
74.) Kate Spade
75.) Treat yourself to a facial once per season.
76.) Opt for SPF.
77.) Layer
78.) Maxi dresses
79.) Plaid
80.) Take inspiration from vintage trends.
81.) Opt for a subtle smokey eye to add instant glamour to any evening outfit.
82.) Military inspired fashion
83.) Steal your husband's watch
84.) Pea coats
85.) Shirtdresses
86.) Opt for leggings if you're questioning the appropriateness of your hemline
87.) Faux fur
88.) Get your beauty sleep. No girl wants/needs to hear "You look tired" from well-meaning--albeit entirely clueless--coworkers first thing in the morning.
89.) Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.
90.) Side-swept bangs
91.) Glasses. Geek is chic!
92.) Have a signature scent.
93.) Rose-gold jewelry. It looks amazing on bold necklaces and oversize watches, and it's also flattering to every skin tone.
94.) Wear camo. In moderation.
95.) Nautical-inspired fashion
96.) Own multiple pairs of boots. The possibilities are endless--riding boots, ankle boots, heeled, flat--and each style lends itself to a different look.
97.) Diamonds. Haven't you heard?--They're a girl's best friend.
98.) Leather bomber jackets
99.) Second-day hair
100.) Be confident. There is absolutely no substitute for knowing you look amazing.

So there you have it--all the DOs and DON'Ts a fashionista could ever ask for! Thanks to all of you who contributed your style savvy--and a special thank you for reading and supporting She's Come Unheeled over the past two years. Cheers to another two years of fashion adventures!

XOXO
Lolly

*My beloved Johanna shared this "don't" with me, and I confess that I have worn black to yoga many times... Apparently even fashionistas make style blunders from time to time. Looks like it's time to add some color to my workout!

Paper Crown

Fashion week reports from all the online publications that I subscribe to have been pouring into my inbox lately, and so I've been trying to keep on top of the news--and, of course, the trends. However--perhaps due to an MTV/reality TV addiction slightly unbecoming at my age--one particular announcement caught my eye: the debut of Paper Crown.

For those of you Laguna-Beach-turned-Hills watchers, Paper Crown is the contemporary line from Lauren Conrad (aka the designer formerly known as LC). But if you've been craving another reality series with Lauren Conrad as star of stage and screen, you will be disappointed to learn that MTV recently dropped her new series, which was set to follow the young designer in the making of Paper Crown. Apparently it was too "high brow" for MTV viewers--but that's a topic for another day... However, it seems that all is never lost when you're MTV's darling (must be nice), and her collection will hit stores this fall.

So, rather than setting a new series recording on your DVR, how about making some room in your closet? Though the Paper Crown price point has yet to be disclosed, there's certainly no lack of wearable fashion where this line is concerned. According to Fashionista, my go-to source for Fashion Week reports and hot-off-the-press trend forecasting, Paper Crown features on-trend basics like leather shorts, silk blouses in blush tones, slouchy blazers, tight cocktail dresses, tiered ruffled maxi dresses (a Conrad staple) and short, flouncy, belted dresses. Indeed, the versatility of the Paper Crown designs are perfect for the gal on the go, transitioning effortlessly from day to night with a youthful bohemian ease.

How refreshing to see the reality star spread her wings beyond scripted fights with frenemies like Kristen and Heidi. Indeed, the lovely Lauren Conrad has grown into a fashion force to be reckoned with, and I have to say that I'm genuinely looking forward to the debut of Paper Crown for the masses. Looks like we need to mark our calendars for fall!

I Want Candy!

Right around this time each year, the dismal grey piles of ice-encrusted snow dominating the barren winter landscape starts to get me down. Though we've made it to February and the end is in sight, these days it takes more than sheer optimism to put on a happy face. While we can't control the weather (shame), fortunately for all you fashionistas out there wardrobe is one thing we can control. So let's sweeten your day with thoughts of warm, happy spring fashions, shall we?

And on that note...I want candy! Literally--in the case of the Candy Shop Jeanette Dress. For me, this dress was love at first sight. You could chalk it up to nostalgia; this dress conjures images of Candy Land--particularly Queen Frostine and Princess Lolly (though the latter is not my namesake, she is certainly my soul sister)--and what little girl didn't grow up loving them? Whatever the case, this silk shirt dress from Kate Spade is too sweet not to love, featuring sunny candy colored stripes, a button front, short sleeves with gathered cuffs, and a skinny pink patent belt. I can see it now: this dress, a cheerful spring day--you can almost hear the birds singing, am I right?!

Though it's clearly vibrant where color scheme is concerned, I feel like this dress is actually quite versatile. It's certainly more of a day dress, but wherever your day may take you, you can take this dress with you: the office, lunch with the girls, afternoon tea, a proper English garden party... But there is one caveat; when it comes to styling, it's best not to go too girly, or else you run the risk of looking overly little girl-y. You can avoid this fashion faux pas by opting for grown-up cosmetics, perhaps a luscious red lip or a smokey eye (though I wouldn't suggest both at the same time). Alternatively, adult footwear produces the same result, and a pair of sky-high heels in a nude patent leather would take the Candy Shop Jeanette to the next level.

So if the winter world outside has you feeling down, turn your thoughts to the sweetness of spring--and make a little room in your closet while you're at it. After all, you'll need a spare hanger if you plan to make this dress your own! At least I will, seeing that I practically always want candy.

Lady Luxe

Remember back in grade school when the new girl immediately sky-rocketed to popularity, leaving all the other girls in her class in a dismal cloud of dust behind her? Well, Lady Luxe is the new girl in my 'hood, and while there isn't much competition, she's still made one hell of entrance!

But maybe I'm getting ahead of myself; allow me to explain... As you may already know, I love love love discovering new boutiques in and around the Boston area. I'm especially partial to vintage and/or consignment shops, which feel like the grown-up version of treasure hunting. You never know what might be hiding on a shelf or rack, and I suppose it's the thrill of the hunt that gets me. Lady Luxe is just this type of shop, and I dare say that part vintage lifestyle and part modern hipster equals one very cute new girl.

I have been meaning to pop into Lady Luxe since I first noticed it last summer. Its location on the Belmont/Cambridge line means that it couldn't be more conveniently located (for me, at least), but I tend to always pass it en route to another destination and just never seem to have a moment to spare! But today was the day. After a rendez vous with some of my very besties, we popped to see what we could see. The sunny vintage shop is bigger than it appears from the street, housing a mix of retro clothing, accessories, and housewares that all possess a suprisingly striking modern appeal.

The treasure on this particular treasure hunt was, without a doubt, an Oscar (de la Renta, to be clear) cap sleeved sheath dress covered in matte finish gold sequins. While it may have been quite literally worth its weight in gold (I kid you not, this dress was heavy!), I'm pretty sure I could have made it look light and effortless. While the price tag of $185 was hardly unreasonable, I had a sneaking suspicion that my adorable husband might disagree with my appraisal so I kept my wallet tucked safely inside my handbag. This time. But I'll be back. After all, who doesn't want to be just as luxe as the new girl?

Psst... If you need to see it to believe it, Lady Luxe is located at 31 Belmont Street in Cambridge, MA--and they're having a sale all through out the month of January! Click here to visit their Facebook page for more details.

Crush On This...

Valentine's Day may still be a month away, but it's never to early to start crushing. Especially when the crush in question is Crush Boutique, a coveted Charles Street fashion destination. When I first stumbled upon the garden level boutique after it opened in 2007, I felt as though I had discovered a hidden gem (literally--as it's partially hidden from the street). The cozy store is home to bold designs, bright colors, and boho/blinged out accessories that you'd be foolish not to crush on.

Like my personal style, my track record at Crush is all over the place, with past purchases ranging from chunky bracelets, to a preppy plaid dress, a hippie chic red peasant top, and dash of designer denim... However, on my most recent shopping excursion, I fell for a more subtle item: a ridiculously soft, burn-out tee in a grey-green that could've been custom made for me (it wasn't). Chatting with store co-owner Rebecca Penner, I learned that Crush had recently received their own branding, and said tee-shirt was just one example. Let me assure you, these girls know their stuff! The tee-shirt had me at hello, but I wasn't in the mood to try it on so Rebecca explained the fit and sizing of their line and suggested wearing my tee under a boyfriend blazer with a pair of heels to dress it up. Priced around $40, it was too versatile (and too soft!!) to turn down. Oh, and did I mention the customer service?

By now, you may be tempted to venture out into the elements in search of your own crush-worthy purchase, but with nearly two feet of snow slamming Boston today, there's no need to go all kamikaze snow bunny! Rather, the girls at Crush have made it easy to stay warm and fashionable with Crush online, their online store that boasts "one-of a kind accessories and unique pieces" that can be yours with the mere click of a mouse. But whenever the snow does finally stop, make some room in your schedule for a Charles Street fashion outing. After all, Valentine's Day is just a month away, and you'll want to be sure that you're looking crush-worthy too...

Smokin' Hot!

Here's a fun fact: The first recorded use of grey as a color name in the English language was in AD 700.* Since then, grey has come to be associated with depression, boredom, neutrality, indefiniteness, old age, and contentment. However, as a gal who loves grey, I can't say that I agree with these rather bleak connotations. Rather, shades of grey overwhelm my closet, and as I've confessed in past weeks, grey has recently overtaken my beauty regime as well--and trust me, it's smokin' hot...

Quite literally, in the case of Smokin' Hot, a new polish from Essie's Winter 2010 collection. At first, I wasn't sure about it; I'm not a huge fan of purple, and its appearance in the bottle had an undeniably purple tone to it. Yet, the Essie website calls this nail color a "stone-cold fox gray that burns hotter than any flame," and when applied to the nails, this smoky grey is truly smoldering. As a styling tip, this color is particularly flattering for those with short, square nails; the look is subtly Parisian chic and--appropriately--smokin' hot.

And not to digress, but grey was all over London during Fashion Week this past fall, both on and off the runway. According to Olivia Bergin from the Daily Telegraph online, Grey [enjoyed] a moment as the versatile shade to perfect tricky, trans-seasonal dressing. I would venture to say that, in addition to smoothing the seasonal transition, grey also transitions rather seamlessly from day to night. It is this very fact that makes grey a staple for the gal on the go. A smart grey dress with opaque black tights and black heels is equally office friendly and dinner worthy (especially when you throw on a bit of smoky shadow en route!). You know what they say: where there's smoke there's fire, and my newly polished grey nails are equal parts versatile and (obvi) smokin' hot.

*Okay, okay, so my "fun fact" is from Wikipedia--so please feel free to correct me in the "comments" section if I'm wrong. From what I hear, the truth will set you free!

Tonight We're Going to Party Like It's...2011

Okay, okay, so "tonight we're going to party like it's 2011" doesn't exactly have the same ring to it as Prince's "1999." Nonetheless, with the New Year fast approaching, it is our solemn duty as fashionistas to celebrate in style. So without further ado, allow me to suggest a few wardrobe possibilities for whatever venues you might currently be considering (decisions, decisions!)...

(1) If your plan is to party like a rockstar...then you need the Althazar Dress by Tory Burch. Once thought to be irreverent, even a fashion faux-pas, the combination of navy and black is now considered bold, modern, and sophisticated. Its body con fit and rows of sequin stripes brings the Althazar's timeless silhouette to a whole new level--one that's simply made for a new year. Styling tip: best worn with opaque black tights and your very highest black heels.

(2) If you're snuggly and snowbound...then you need the Electra Vest from the J. Crew Collection. Reinterpret "snow bunny" by adding a bit of hipster flair with this electra-fying furry vest. Made of Italian shearling panels with a defined collar, the short and fitted silhouette is ultra flattering when worn over a boyfriend top and paired with skinny jeans. The overall effect is a subtly modern homage to the après ski look. Styling tip: tousled hair and hipster glasses are optional...but absolutely fabulous.

(3) If you're braving the elements...then you need this Wool Felt Coat from Marc by Marc Jacobs. Because let's be honest, freezing outside is so not hot. The good news is that it's hip to be warm when you select the right outerwear, and this Marc classic (worn by the likes of Sienna Miller and Blake Lively's Serena van der Woodsen) brings a bit of military edge to the table with its gold tone buttons and hook and bar closures. And because the details really do matter, this jacket's bold red lining adds a little pop! of color that can boost a fashionista's spirits during the doldrums of winter. Styling tip: As fabulous as Blake/Serena may look in her itty bitty mini and spiky heels, if you're spending NYE in the bitter cold outdoors, ditch the stilettos and opt for sleek riding boots instead (shearling lined is a plus).

One of the things I love most about New Year's is that there's not just one option for celebrating. In fact--rather symbolically, I think--the possibilities are endless. For some, this means going downtown and standing in the freezing cold as the minutes tick down to midnight. Others opt for parties with friends, or cozy evenings at home with loved ones. One of my high school friends celebrated his birthday on New Year's, and so--in my younger years--December 31 always meant the most fun birthday party everrr. But whatever your New Year's Eve protocol, style is a MUST. And on that note, cheers to a very fashionable New Year.

Unleash Your Inner Animal

Everyone who's anyone already knows that Eclipse, the third cinematographic installment in the Twilight saga, came out on DVD this past weekend (can I get an Amen?). So, of course, a Twilight marathon was a MUST for me, and I accordingly subjected my wonderful husband and equally wonderful mother-in-law to countless hours of Team Edward vs. Team Jacob... That said, it may come as no surprise that the whole concept of the "inner animal" has been on my mind, and it is perhaps for this very reason that I now find myself inexplicably obsessed with Tory Burch's leopard print Capys Dress.

What might otherwise be a conservative silk dress with a classic silhouette is anything but-- given its bold leopard print. I actually had the recent opportunity to view (and covet) this dress in person at the Tory Burch store in Las Vegas, and I have to admit that the photo online doesn't do it justice. I found the color to be a more of a muted yet rich caramel color than the almost golden yellow in the photo. Nonetheless, I love the styling of Capys in this photo, with the opaque black tights and black heels; I feel it's crucial to balance a wild animal print (or any sort of wild print) with more understated accessories, and black is ideal for this particular dress. The Tory Burch website touts it as "perfect for holiday cocktails," and whether it's cocktails or mocktails that you're sipping this season, I agree that it's high time to unleash your inner animal.

From The Great Gatsby to Cuchi Cuchi--Back to the Roaring Twenties

Last night, my husband and I had the opportunity to dine out with our great friends at Cambridge's Cuchi Cuchi. Having heard countless rave reviews of the Central Square spot, I was just waiting for an excuse to check it out for myself--and it was well worth the wait, both for the spicy and sophisticated cuisine and the inspiring fashion. The concept behind the chic hotspot is essentially an homage to la belle epoch and early Hollywood. The result is a glowing, lavishly furnished restaurant/bar, where Daisy Buchanan-esque waitresses serve small, "straight up" dishes (not to be mistaken for tapas!) and vintage cocktails. Feeling as though I had stepped into one of Jay Gatsby's infamous parties, I almost found myself looking for a single green light, minute and faraway, that might have been the end of a dock.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. While dressing for dinner earlier that evening, I lamented my lack of wardrobe options. My adorable husband, who always does his homework, reported that the Cuchi Cuchi website identified the dress code as one of casual elegance, which was further qualified as pearls and designer jeans. Although I was somewhat surprised by these specifics, it made dressing that much easier--and without further fuss and bother, I happily climbed into my black Rock & Republic skinny jeans, and we hit the road.

Yet, just thirty minutes later, surrounded by a glamorous waitstaff who captured the quintessential Gatsby look with unparalleled perfection, I was feeling much more like the unrefined Myrtle Wilson (was it because of our shared last name?) than the ravishing (albeit fickle) Daisy. It wasn't until later that I learned that Cuchi Cuchi actually has its own costume closet and vault library so that their staff can bedazzle themselves in vintage clothes and jewels like the roaring twenties never ended. From the glitz to the glam to the painted, ruby red lips, these lovely ladies glittered with finery that left me considering the ways that an everyday fashionista might incorporate a bit of old world beauty and excess into an everyday look.

As it turns out, the answer lies in Cuchi Cuchi's own brilliant dress code. By simply adding a few choice accessories to an otherwise streamlined look, you can infuse the everyday with a much-needed hint of drama. For example, a jeweled hair pin; dramatic faux lashes and red velvet lips; a glittering cocktail ring; a luxe silk blouse; or even a a simple headband, worn jazz-era style (across your forehead) can bring your pearls and designer jeans look back to the bygone age. Plus, there's a good chance you already have many--if not all--of these items in your closet. That means you get to be glamorous and frugal at precisely the same time--leaving your hard earned dollars for a night out at...Cuchi Cuchi! I mean, really now, where else would you go?

Please Mind The Gap

Happy Monday, style mavens! After discussing Paris at length for the last few weeks, I thought that we might kick off this week by dishing about what the Brits are wearing. Between doses of proper English tea (and all the delicious goodies that go with it), Sarah and I were able to fit in a lotttt of shopping into just a few days in London--and with it, a lot of style watching too! Read on for a few trends of note that can easily be incorporated into your spring look...

Punk rock is all the rage amongst crowds of youthful London girls--but they don't make 'em like they used to. Today's punk rock look is a contemporary re-interpretation of the age-old trend, characterized by destroyed tights; bright colors worn in layers; biker jackets; heavy eye make-up; and hair for daysss (in all directions humanly possible, albeit with the help of hairspray). If there was ever such a thing as punk rock couture, then it can be found in London, where rocker is part runway, part imagination, and--at times--utterly feminine. And you know how I love the edgy/girly duality!...

The world is flat. As Sarah reported back in her dispatch from across the pond in September, London "women walk everywhere and for once, their footwear reflects the adage of form following function." But make no mistake, style is not up for negotiation. In fact, I've never seen more variation of flats: neon, patterned, blinged-out bejeweling... You name it, they wear it. Although a heel lover myself, my trip across the pond has made a convert out of me--especially after days of walking and majorly aching feet. I now totally understand the flat appeal: live it, love it--wear them!

Heavy bangs are everywhere, and though I may have had trouble committing to my bangs, the ladies of London are definitely not having the same commitment issues. After observing the ease with which they rocked their edgy cuts, I was half tempted to return to bangs myself--but with summer (and humidity) just around the corner, the necessary maintenance of a heavy bang was a deal breaker for this American girl. I guess I'll leave that one to the British babes.

Ankle boot obsessed: It seems that I have a little something in common with the girls across the pond, for they too are obsessed with ankle boots. I noticed them everywhere, especially in the flat variety (which makes sense, obvi, considering our above discussion of flats). In fact, Elle UK reported that ankle boots will be the summer's surprise fashion hit, especially when worn battered and boyish--like you're not even trying (even though we'll know better).

So there you have it, all the trends you'll need for a charming--yet utterly chic--London style. At least, that's the word according to this fashionista's trend spotting. While not all of these trends work for me, I am most definitely embracing flats this season, which is actually a big change for me (despite all 5 feet and 11 inches of me). Until next time, thanks for stopping by--and please mind the gap.

I Love Paris, Part 2

As you might have gathered from last week's post, there are many reasons why I love Paris. Among them is one that I haven't yet mentioned: the fresh, new shops. No matter where you go in the U.S., you're mostly faced with the same selection. I suppose that's what happens when department stores take over the world? Of course, while you can usually find charming independent boutiques scattered throughout our great cities and towns, there's often repetition with the lines they carry. So what's a girl to do?--Go to Paris!

Shopping in Paris is like starting over. With the exception of the big designers (the blessing and the curse of that pesky fashion monopoly I mentioned earlier), there are countless lines that (a) I have never heard of, (b) are unavailable in the States, and/or (c) both. There are the fabulously infamous concept stores like Merci and Colette (to be discussed in more detail by Miss Sarah when she returns from Egypt--did I mention how jealous I am of my jet-setting friend?), as well as the smaller--yet equally edgy--independent shops as well. And somewhere along this fashionable spectrum is Swildens.

Anne Sophie, the enchanting and bubbly shop girl (as a fellow shop girl, I mean that as a term of endearment--just to be clear) who was part British and part French, might have had a liiiittle something to do with my new found love for Swildens. With the size and appearance of a pixie and the energy level of Mary Poppins, she went above and beyond--going so far as to swap music recommendations with Sarah and telling me that I looked like the model in a music video her ex-boyfriend produced (yes, she actually proceeded to show us the video). Definitely one of my more unique shopping experiences, shall we say? But I digress... The point, dearest fashionista friends, is this: Swildens offers a stunning array of boho chic apparel--made of luxurious fabrics in a variety of solids and prints, always with a flattering cut. And you can't really argue with that.

I, for one, totally fell for a long hippie-esque maxi dress with bell sleeves, which miraculously filled a void in my closet: a maxi dress with sleeves. Anne Sophie helpfully offered some style advice about how to effectively work the dress: wear my hair loose with just a few strands pulled back from my face (the ultimate flower child 'do), with an assortment of long, delicate chains at my neck. While I don't really go for long necklaces--with the obvious exception of pearls--I could definitely agree to the hair style, seeing that it's not all that different from my daily look.

So, if you haven't already guessed, I bought the dress--which is now waiting patiently in my closet for its summer debut. Clearly, Anne Sophie is one fabulous sales person--and with that bit about me looking like a model? Please, she had me at bonjour.

I'm A Barbie Girl--and so are they...

It wasn't too long ago that I was raving about Christian Louboutin's fabulous Barbie partnership--and I confess I didn't think it could get much better than that! But it seems wonders never cease, for the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), a not-for-profit trade association of America’s foremost designers, hosted a Barbie Collector Charity Auction on Ebay earlier this year to benefit their educational initiatives and scholarship program. The benefit featured Barbie (obvi!), à la Kate Spade, Alexis Bittar, and Betsey Johnson--just to name a few. Clearly, life in plastic just got so much more fantastic.

These special Barbies' apparel centered around everyone's favorite fashion MUST, the little black dress (LBD), in accordance with the style and personality of each of these fabulous designers. Don't ask me how it happened, but the fact that I MISSED this exclusive event (which ran from January 28-February 7) is something that I may never forgive myself for. My only hope is that one lucky bidder will get tired of their Barbie girl and put her back up for auction?... Pretty please?...

Spring Dress Lust

Here in Boston, the weather has been beyond gorgeous for the past few days, which has me believing that spring really is around the corner. With that thought in mind, I've been breaking out a few choice spring wardrobe pieces and considering possible additions to my wardrobe for the newly budding season... Hence the (most recent) object of my dress lust.

You may recall Miranda Priestley's snide remark in The Devil Wears Prada, "Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking." So, yes, I concede that florals are an obvious choice. Yet, after the loooong and harrowing winter doldrums, my rebuttal is this: what is so wrong with a few well-placed flowers? And well-placed they are, on the Nil Dress in Falling Anatolia Multi by Diane von Furstenberg.

Made of cascading crinkled chiffon in a brilliant white, the Nil Dress features delicate blue and purple anatolias, collecting around the bottom hem and slowly creeping towards the neckline. Cinched at the waist with a self-tie belt, and complimented by a loose v-neck and flutter sleeves, it really doesn't get more delicate, feminine, or springy than this--and I want it! If it were mine (sigh), I would play up the edgy factor with a pair of really killer heels. After all, every good little floral-loving girl has a rockstar side too. Or that's just me? Regardless, you can have your flowers however you like. They may not be groundbreaking, but they are a spring MUST.

Belle of the Ball

If you can believe it, spring is just around the corner (March 20 to be exact), and there is no time like the present to begin your spring cleaning. For some, that means hauling out the broom, mop, and Windex for your own version of extreme makeover home edition, but for fashionistas it means something much, much different: time to clean out the closet! And the timing couldn't be more perfect, with the Belle of the Ball fundraiser extending from now until April 1. Now you can make room for some new spring looks and lend a helping hand at the same time by sharing your super chic dresses with those in need.

Celebrating it's 6th year, the Belle of the Ball fundraiser is a prom dress collection drive that aims to collect, clean, trendy, gently worn gowns and outfit 300-400 junior and senior high school students who otherwise would not be able to attend their prom night. Here's how it works:
  • Dresses can be any size, but they must be in good condition (ie. no rips, holes, broken zippers, or stains).

  • Remember that the dresses will be given to high school juniors and seniors so they should be both trendy and age-appropriate.

  • The dress collection takes place between now and April 1. For your convenience, you can drop off dresses at any Anton's Cleaners of Jordan's Furniture location during this time period.

I know we all remember how important prom was during our high school reign, and now you have a chance to help a new generation of young ladies (hello, fashionistas-in-training!) look and feel fabulous on their special night. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: doing good is always in style.

Special thanks to the lovely Lizzie for the heads-up on this amazing cause!
