au revoir twenty-something

Once upon a time...

Today is major, as I say goodbye to my 20s and prepare to join the ranks of a new decade.  I have been having issues about this milestone.  When I was little and played with Barbies, I would make Barbie's mom 30; it seemed old, very adult-like and serious.  So I was shocked when it came upon me so quickly.  I thought I would own my own home by now, or at least my own Chanel handbag!  But...

I like to think that what I lack in status symbols, I make up for in other ways.  While there is actually a lot that I don't remember about the last decade of my life, I have experienced the utmost in triumphs and tragedies--but have so much to be grateful for today.   Namely I am thankful to be standing on the brink of a new age bracket with outstanding friends and an amazing family by my side, all of whom have made my birthday month ridiculously special so far--and it's not even my birthday yet!

I have had this week off work, which may be one of the very best ways to celebrate any birthday.  So today, while Harper did a half-day at school, I took the opportunity to run some errands AND treat myself to the obligatory mani/pedi so that I could feel truly ready to be a grown-up tomorrow.  While my tootsies were being polished and pampered, I caught up on the September issue of Glamour, which must have been fate since one of the featured articles was Olivia Wilde's "Advice for Turning 30."

Unlike my husband, Olivia Wilde has never exactly been on my radar, but it turns out the girl can write!  As a fellow almost-30-year-old, she calls our impending milestone the "Cut the Bullsh-t and Go Be Awesome stage," which is definitely something I can get down with. I mean, please, I'm already awesome! Of her list of dos and don'ts for thirty-somethings out there, here are my three favorites--which made me laugh so I had to include them in their entirety rather than paraphrasing (I might be awesome, but I'm not exactly what you would call funny):

DON'T freak out about all the brilliant people who accomplished more than you by 30.
Yes, Einstein had discovered the theory of relativity by your age, and Emily Brontë had written Wutheringfu*#ing Heights, but honestly, what you achieve is far less important than what kind of human being you are. What do you want people to say at your funeral: "Olivia may have cured HIV, but she ran over my cat and drove away laughing"? No, thanks! I'd rather be a good person who makes people happy than a dick who wins a Nobel by 32.

DO reap the benefits of your accumulated wisdom.
You're 30: You know stuff now. Your twenties were for "ducking up," as my auto-correct would say, and learning from those mistakes. (For instance, never again will I convince myself that sleep is for sissies and go straight from a party to the airport. You will not "sleep on the plane"; you'll vomit in the security line. Go to bed.) Now you get to live with that knowledge under your belt. Also, make it a nice belt. You're 30. Stop dressing like a hobo.

And DON'T be bogged down by your past.
Saturn has now orbited the sun once since you've been alive; make this next go-round whatever you want it to be. Consider your baggage (bad boyfriends, job setbacks, body issues) lost by the airline of life, leaving you empty-handed at your new destination with only one choice: Go shopping.

That's it. Now go—be awesome.

The reality is that 30 is upon me, whether I'm "ready" for it or not. So what choice do I have but to boldly go where everyone 30+ has gone before?

I may not have discovered the theory of relativity or even invented Post-Its, but I feel like I'm doing okay nonetheless and have left some room for growth too... I have become a little bit more domestic (thank you, Pinterest!); learned how to say no when I'm feeling stretched too thin; embraced flats; have started my own little family with my amazing and ridiculously tall husband; refuse to paint my own toes but can totally handle a DIY mani; stopped apologizing for my taste in bad tween TV; love where I work; have some seriously fabulous friends; and feel anchored by my faith.  I told you I was already awesome!  So 30 years old?  Maybe I can handle this after all.

summer update part 2

Last month, after an embarrassing update, I promised I would have at least three more items crossed off my summer bucket list at the beginning of August.  Since we are now forging into the middle of the month, I felt like I should make good on my promise.  Here's where I stand...

My husband (on the left), making me the perfect s'more.

I am obsessed with s'mores right now.  In fact, did you know that this past Saturday was National S'mores Day?  I actually didn't discover that fun fact until Sunday, but at least my obsession is a timely one.  I've had the chance to enjoy s'mores on several occasions in the last month.  The best was definitely the traditional version, enjoyed around an outdoor fire with family and friends at my mom's house in Western MA.  With Harper on my lap, my obliging husband was the one who actually made my s'mores (yes, I ate two), and he has basically perfected the art.  Thanks to the life-changing powers of Pinterest, I have also learned about and successfully recreated a version of s'mores that doesn't require a camp fire.  Behold, the s'mores bite; I know that s'mores sans fire sounds blasphemous, but these are pretty darn close to the real thing.  If you don't believe me, just try them:

Yet another reason I love Pinterest: s'mores bites

Ingredients:
-6 graham cracker sheets
-6 large marshmallows
-12 Hershey’s Kisses, unwrapped

Directions:
-Break graham cracker sheets in half.

-Cut each marshmallow in half.
-Heat oven to Low Broil.
-Align graham crackers in the center of a cookie sheet about 1/2″ apart from each other.
-Top each graham cracker with a marshmallow with the cut/sticky side down.
-Place marshmallow-topped graham crackers under broiler.  Don't walk away!  Watch them, as they will toast quickly, allow to toast until marshmallows are golden.
-Once golden, immediately remove from oven, and place 1 Hershey's Kiss in the center of each toasted marshmallow and gently press down.
Yum.

It is indeed possible I have been eating so many s'mores in a desperate attempt to ignore the fact that I'm turning 30 this month.  I've been trying to adjust my attitude though, since the truth of the matter is that aging is a gift that not everyone is able to enjoy.  I haven't actively been planning the party of the century or anything, but I feel like my "perfect 30th birthday" is totally within reach, with my birth month off to a fabulous start.  On Saturday, my lovely sister treated me to lunch at one of my favorite restaurants, followed by window shopping, and then an indulgent spa facial.  It feels a little symbolic that I've shed a layer of skin (okay not really--but exfoliation counts) to greet a new decade.  Regardless, sister spa time was a truly incredible birthday gift--and my skin feels amazing.  Also amazing was the watermelon mint cooler I had at lunch, which I am now inspired to recreate at home.

Watermelon Cooler at The Cottage in Wellesley, MA

In fact, home creations just might be the theme of this month.  I have been wanting to redo our bedroom for a while now.  The décor just isn't working for us; it is dark and, despite our best design attempts when we moved in three years ago, just misses the mark.  At the top of my "must have" list is space-saving storage, and to that end, I have been coveting an amazing storage bed from Pottery Barn that is simply not within our budget.  So my handyman husband found the plans online and began construction this weekend; I am nervous but excited to see how it will turn out.  I have given him a pretty tight deadline of two weeks so only time will tell!  Also part of the bedroom redo is a new color scheme palette.  Right now, blue is our central color, but we're trying to move in a softer direction--perhaps a light grey, maybe accented by a pale aqua...  We have nothing set in stone yet, as the bed is taking precedence, but I am looking forward to the finished product.

So here's the official report:

Reread The Great Gatsby (my favorite summer book)
  • Hoping to accomplish this while I'm off work next week...
Finally complete Harper's baby book (she is going on 2, after all)
  • Planning to finally order prints tonight!
Make s'mores around an outdoor fire
  • Done--and yum!
Redo my bedroom décor
  • A work in progress!
Explore a New England beach I haven't been to before
  • On the calendar for this weekend with some of my besties--another early birthday celebration!
Finally have a picnic with my amazing cousin before she moves
  • Hopefully this week?
Go for long summer walks (a favorite pastime)
  • A walk is not the same thing as walks so clearly I'm still working on this one...  Fortunately for me, the temperatures have been lovely this month so far--so let's leave it at "to be continued."
Do more yoga
  • Haven't been back to class yet...  Le sigh.
Eat fiddleheads while they're in season
  •  Impossible (poor time management)
Plan my perfect 30th birthday in the absence of Chanel (tick tock!)
  • A work in progress...

I still have a lot of work to do, but I'm feeling much, much better about my progress this time around.  Things weren't looking good for me for a moment there, but I'm grateful that I actually put my summer goals in writing so that I can truly hold myself accountable.  Thankfully now it's all happening!  Stay tuned for the final report...

stealing from friends

Last month, I attended a health and beauty exchange with some of my favorite ladies.  For those unfamiliar with this type of event, it is like a Yankee Swap but far more fabulous.  Here's how it works: you set a price point for a favorite health or beauty item; buy enough for all who will be in attendance; and get together to exchange and dish on your health and beauty secrets.  So fun, right?!

I picked up some helpful tricks of the trade, and a few particulars have already been implemented in my own personal regime:

All About Eyes, $30 for 0.5 oz.
by Clinique
Available at Sephora

The lovely Genevieve shared a beauty secret she learned during her time in France: under-eye cream is a MUST.  She swears by Clinique's All About Eyes, applied twice daily as part of her morning and evening routine.  Since my under-eyes haven't exactly received rave reviews since my adventures as a fashionista became the unheeled adventures of fashionista and baby, I had to try it for myself.  I have been using All About Eyes for only a couple of weeks now so I can't speak to the long-term results, but I already love the restorative, moisturizing lightness of this cream and the fact that a little goes a long way.  Hopefully I am also on my way towards looking as fresh-faced as Genevieve and the tres chic women of France.

Almond Supple Skin Oil, $40
by L'Occitane

The lovely Mary shared a very helpful beauty secret for expectant mamas, the Almond Supple Skin Oil from L'Occitane.  Having recently moved into my third-trimester, this seemed like a necessity.  Made of almond and Cameline oil, your skin is left feeling deeply moisturized and more toned.  It is safe to apply all over, and since I find the summer to be a very drying season, particularly as Harper and I frequent the pool, I've also been using it on my legs to combat dryness.  I had shied away from oils in the past for fear that I would feel greasy or sticky, but this oil is light and absorbs into the skin quickly.  Those who know me also know that I am olfactorily-challenged, but from what I have heard, the scent is delicious too!

Sugar Shine Lip Treatment, $18.50
by Fresh
Available at Sephora

The lovely Aimee introduced me to Fresh's Sugar Shine Lip Treatment, and I am a total convert.  In the past, I have used and loved their Sugar Advanced Therapy, and so I trust Fresh implicitly.  While it is difficult to compete with Sara Happ's Lip Slip, which has been my glossy go-to for what feels like forever, the Sugar Shine Lip Treatment brings the amazing powers of Fresh to a shiny new place.  This all-in-one lip remedy is neither heavy nor sticky, but it moisturizes while also adding gloss and a subtle sheen.   All of this has earned it a place in my handbag to be used for any and every occasion; I am completely obsessed.

I feel very fortunate to be in the mix with some totally dialed-in girlies and to have the opportunity to beg, borrow, and steal their secrets to health and beauty.  Hopefully this will be the first of many health and beauty exchanges to come!

I Am Thankful For My Fashionista Friends Episode 30: Be Inspired

Image thanks to Daily Candy

As you know, I dedicated She's Come Unheeled posts during the month of November to the spirit of thanksgiving and the people, places, and things that have inspired my gratitude--not to mention my fashion sensibilities.  With all that's happened in my life lately, this 30-day pledge has been a challenge at times, but I feel fortunate to have had the specific opportunity to reflect on what I'm thankful for--and it's hard to believe that it's already the 30th!  Given that today is the last official post (which is not to say that I won't share my gratitude in the future), it feels appropriate to give thanks for fashion in general, especially the DOs and DON'Ts that keep a self-proclaimed fashionista on her toes.

Yesterday, while my baby slept, I left the NICU to grab some lunch.  Feeling lethargic as I trudged back to the hospital, a fellow pedestrian caught my eye: a man carrying a briefcase and wearing work pants and oxfords, paired with a purple hoodie and sleeveless denim vest.  Unfortunately, I only saw this ensemble from the back and regret that I didn't think to stealthily snap a photo with my iPhone, but still I had to laugh--and I needed to laugh.  It didn't take a fashionista to recognize what was amiss with that outfit: everything.  Yet, I am thankful for fashion DON'Ts like this one to add a little comic relief to my day and to serve as a reminder of, while beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, there are some fashion rules that should not be broken.

Just as fashion DON'Ts crop up in the most unexpected places, fashion DOs can appear just as randomly.  Today, while walking to the elevator (again to grab some lunch--I sense a pattern here), I passed a fellow NICU mom in the hallway, looking like the portrait of chic in the hospital corridor.  Her outfit was simple but elegant: black leggings, a white tunic-length tee with a cozy sweater and...nude patent leather flats.  Now, I've already professed my love for my nude pumps, but I never even considered nude flats.  They have the same versatility as nude pumps, yet by nature of being a flat, they are inherently more casual.  Still, they add a level of style and grace that is to be coveted.  Simply put: I need to get a pair of my own, and I am thankful for the fact that fashion inspiration can strike at any time, in any place.

As Coco Chanel once said, Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.  In the past month, as I have kept myself especially open to inspiration, I have found this to be more true than ever before.  Whether it's a DO or DON'T, a hot trend or a classic, fashion is absolutely everywhere--and I am thankful to be able to soak in it, to experiment with new ideas, and to be inspired by the fashion of others.  And on that note, dearest fashionista friends, I am thankful for each of you and your unceasing fashion savvy.  November will soon be over, but I'm already looking forward to holiday fashion...  Just saying!

I Am Thankful For My Fashionista Friends, Episodes 21-26: Things I Love

Dearest fashionista friends, I hope you all had a marvelous Thanksgiving and were able to celebrate all the things in your life that you have to be thankful for!  Over the past 20 posts, I have shared some of the fashion, beauty, and lifestyle inspirations that I am grateful for.  However, nothing compares to the blessing that my husband and I received when we welcomed our little girl, Harper Livingston, one week ago today.  Born at just over 36 weeks, Harper has spent the first week of her life in the NICU at Beth Israel hospital in Boston to gather her strength before she can return home with us.  I am eternally thankful for the precious gift of our sweet baby girl, and for all the people that have supported, encouraged, and lifted us up over the past week.  There is nothing more fashionable than an outpouring of love.

So, while I was able to get a post in after Harper was born last Saturday, I have since neglected my pledge of 30 posts of gratitude throughout the month of November.  I know you understand.  But as my mother says, better late than never--so allow me to share a condensed version of the people and things I have been specifically thankful for (some huge and perhaps obvious, others small and simple) over these last few days...

Le Pavillion iPhone 4 Case
in white/black/pink, $40
by Kate Spade
#21: I am thankful for...my iPhone.  Seriously.  Dallin and I have observed several pay phones throughout the hospital corridors, and I have wondered if I could even figure out how to use a pay phone anymore?  I mean, I certainly don't know how much it costs to make a call these days; the last time I used a pay phone, my age ended in "teen," and the going rate was 35 cents.  Indeed, my iPhone has proved to be worth its weight in gold these days (and as a portfolio analyst, I can safely assure you that gold is all the rage).  It has kept us connected to family and friends, while also serving as a handy camera, an alarm clock, and the source of countless games.  I have to thank my awesome friend and coworker, Joe, who encouraged me to take the iPhone plunge when my beloved Blackberry finally died, for I am truly thankful for this little piece of absolutely crucial technology--in its irresistible Kate Spade polka dot case.

#22: I am thankful for...my fabulous friends and family.  Obvi!  Over these last days, Dallin, Harper, and I have received so much love from the amazing people that we are lucky enough to call family and friends.  From visits with friends bearing emergency cases of ginger ale; to quality time with family and an extremely eager new grandmother; to countless emails and texts; to Thanksgiving treats brought all the way to the hospital, the word "thankful" doesn't actually do justice to how I feel about the loving kindness we have received.  Thank you.

Golden Bronzer, $32
by Trish McEvoy
Available at Nordstrom
#23: I am thankful for...the healing powers of make up.  Truly, I don't mean this in a shallow or superficial way.  When I was discharged from the hospital on Thursday, Dallin and I had to face the incredibly difficult obstacle of returning home--without our baby girl.  I'm not going to say that I handled this situation with poise and grace; rather, I spent most of Wednesday in tears of anticipation.  But on Thursday, as we gathered our things, I decided that I needed to ready myself to face the world--and that falling apart wasn't going to do me (or anyone else) any good.  In an effort to pull it together, I straightened my hair, brushed on some of my favorite Trish McEvoy bronzer, added a little Chanel eyeliner, and brought out the big guns with my waterproof tube of DiorShow mascara. I had to laugh when our nurse remarked on how much "better" I looked that day; clearly, I'm not a natural beauty.  But sometimes just putting in the effort can help, and I am grateful for these cosmetic staples for making me look--if not feel--like a normal human being again.  The rest will hopefully come with the healing powers of time.

Dallin and me on the Outer Banks this past summer

#24: I am thankful for...my amazing husband.  In the five plus years we have been married, Dallin has proved himself time and time again to be the best companion a self-proclaimed fashionista like me could have possibly asked for in life.  He just knows.  When he left the hospital briefly on Monday night to go home and grab some work clothes for the next day, he returned with (among other things) my cashmere socks and the newest issue of Us Weekly.  On Wednesday, when I was on the verge of falling apart, he helped me on a walk outside to get some air and try to clear my head, no matter that I was wearing my Juicy velour PJ pants and Ugg slippers.  These small acts of selflessness--not to mention every time I see him cuddling with or feeding our baby daughter--remind me of how thankful I am to be blessed with Dallin as an eternal companion.  I know Harper will be equally thankful for her daddy.

DTB Duffel in black, $78
by Lulu Lemon
#25: I am thankful for...my Lulu Lemon yoga bag.  Since I was discharged from the hospital, DallinDallin's iPad, and all the normal stuff into my Burberry tote was going to result in broken handbag straps (for the third time).  So we turned to the amazing Lulu Lemon yoga bag that my amazing sister, Annie, and her equally amazing boyfriend, Gil, got me for my birthday in August.  Its size is big enough to fit everything we need for a day at the hospital, and it comes equipped with dozens of handy pockets and zipped compartments to stay organized.  When life gets crazy, sometimes it is the simple things for which you can be thankful.  I may not be toting the bag to and from yoga for a while, but that doesn't mean I can't feel a sense of peace.

#26: I am thankful for...the joy of motherhood.  When we lost our baby boy, Rex Fish, last October, I had never felt such complete and utter devastation and feared that I would never have the opportunity to enjoy the blessing of a living child.  While Harper is currently facing the challenges of being born early, I am thankful for the gift of her life and for the opportunity I have to be a mother.  She is precious, sweet, and even a little bit feisty at times, and I look forward to watching her grow and mature with each passing day--and hope for the day that we can bring her home with us.

Dear fashionista friends, it's hard to believe that we are quickly approaching the end of November, and though my blog pledge (of 30 posts in the spirit of thanks) has been a tall order at times, I am thankful to have had the opportunity to reflect on the people, places, and things that have inspired my gratitude.  While today I have condensed the last six days into one post, believe me when I tell you that I could have written volumes about the love and support my little family has received during that time.  So thank you again to those who have made my burdens light--and to the little fashion tricks that have helped me make it with just a little bit of style too.

Episode 18: I Am Thankful For All Things Nautical

I woke up before my alarm this morning and, not being able to get back to sleep, I found myself with a bit of extra time on my hands and decided to check my email.  I was happy to discover a TGIF message from my adorable sister, containing a valuable fashion tip from our dear friend Rian: The Daily Prep, a fabulously preppy blog.  The most recent post featured these amazing rope bracelets by Lemon & Line that appealed to my love of all things nautical--and now I'm a bit obsessed.  So today, not only am I thankful for the lovely Rian, but I am also thankful for the inside scoop on this fun new nautical fashion.

Nautical Rope Bracelets from the Nantucket Collection, $25 each
by Lemon & Line

Made in Newport, these nautical rope bracelets from Lemon & Line's Nantucket Collection are available in red, yellow, navy, and green.  The nautical knot is balanced with a metal clasp that adds an interesting contemporary element--and I am totally sold.  Upon further investigation, Lemon & Line have some other great collections available too (the Newport and Vineyard), but the cheerful color palette of their Nantucket Collection definitely speaks to me.  For a nautical-loving girl like me, there couldn't be a more perfect accessory, and the price isn't prohibitive either.  Many thanks to the lovely Rian for her style savvy and for bringing a bit of knotty-ness to an ordinary Friday.

Episode 13: Loving Wallis

Without a doubt, butter London is one of my favorite nail polish companies.  Not only is it fabulously British, but the colors are splendidly unique--and always well named.  To me, the name counts, and I'll admit to being sold on one nail lacquer over another simply on the basis of a cool name.  In fact, naming the colors of cosmetics would be my dream job (anyone hiring?).  So I was pretty excited when my amazing friend, Annie Rose, gave me a bottle of butter London's Wallis lacquer for my birthday a couple of months ago--and I am thankful for the surprising opportunity it provided for me to learn about the namesake of this fabulous color.

Wallis Nail Lacquer, $14
by butter London

I had read a while back that Wallis was all the rage during London Fashion Week--and one look tells you why.  I have yet to see a color quite like this one, and that's really saying something because I get my nails done a lot.  Back in the summer, I was all about gold glitter polish on my toes, but Wallis is more than basic gold.  Rather, to steal the words straight from butter's website, Wallis is a tarnished metallic olive gold that heralds from butter's Fall/Winter 2011 collection.  According to butter's Founding Creative Director and color trend expert Nonie Creme, the collection as a whole was designed to “reflect the 'luxe-grunge' moment, and burst of new era, ‘dirty’ jewel tones prevalent on the catwalk for Autumn/Winter 2011.” Indeed, there is a certain rich darkness to Wallis that makes it sophisticated yet irreverent--and I absolutely love it.

The butter website's description of Wallis adds that the color is as mysterious and regal as its namesake.  This got me thinking, what namesake?  Not being a Brit myself (shame--I would love the accent), I thought that maybe there was some trendy royal that I didn't know about.  After some investigation, it turns out that there's a good story behind the name of this amazing nail lacquer, and I'm so thankful that a nail polish--of all things--pushed me towards a juicy little history lesson.  It also turns out that my original suspicions weren't totally off the mark...

The original Wallis:
The Duchess of Windsor in 1936
Photo thanks to Wikipedia

Born Bessie Wallis Warfield in 1896, Wallis was was an American socialite whose life story reads practically like an episode of Gossip Girl--though I venture to say that the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite have got nothing on Wallis.   Her first marriage to US naval officer, Earl Winfield Spencer, Jr. ended in divorce, though she soon married again.   It was during her second marriage, to shipping executive Ernest Aldrich Simpson, that Wallis was rumored to have become the mistress to Edward, Prince of Wales.  It wasn't until two years later, after Edward's ascension to the throne as King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom and the Dominions, that Wallis divorced her second husband--and Edward proposed to her.

Of course, Wallis's checkered marital past was a red flag for those proper Brits; that is to say, the King's intention to wed a woman with two living ex-husbands threatened to cause a constitutional crisis in the United Kingdom and the Dominions, and so lucky husband number three ultimately abdicated the throne to be with his lady love. Following the abdication, the former king was titled Duke of Windsor by his brother George VI, and after their marriage, Wallis was formally known as the Duchess of Windsor (not quite the same ring as "Her Royal Highness"--but still).  And then they lived happily ever after.  Okay, maybe not--but they did hop back and forth across the pond, living the high life as society celebrities, surrounded by controversy and intrigue.  If US Weekly had been around then, I'm sure they would have covered the story.

I never thought I'd learn all that from a bottle of nail polish, but knowing what I know now, the glittery darkness of butter's Wallis lacquer seems totally befitting its namesake.  So thank you, dear Annie Rose, for my amazing nail color--and for the opportunity to learn a thing or two about history and scandal.  Love it.

FYI: Nonnie Creme quote from butter London's website.  Information on Wallis from Wikipedia--so feel free to correct any unintentional historical inaccuracies!

Episode 4: Not Your Ordinary Hair Tie

I'm all about accessories, but I have to admit that sometimes function takes precedent over fashion.  For example, the two black hair elastics that I wear on my right wrist everyday aren't really a fashion statement, though maybe I should claim them as my "signature look."  Rather, I keep them on stand-by for the million occasions I encounter during the day when I need to get my crazy long hair out of my face and get down to business.  Then, when my fabulous friend, Annie Rose, flew in from Seattle for a fun weekend visit last month, I learned that there are some hair ties out there that give function and fashion an equal opportunity.  These are not your ordinary hair ties--and for this (and a laundry list of other reasons) I am thankful to the lovely Annie Rose.

Emi-Jay Hair Ties in Cure Collection, $7.99

Created by Emily Matson and Julianne Goldmark, Emi-Jay Hair Ties are "guaranteed to make your outfit and your day."  These handmade hair ties come in just about every color that you can imagine and are sold in bundles of three to eight.  Made to be soft and stretchy, no matter how tight you pull your ponytail, they won't leave a dent in your hair.  But perhaps the best part is that each hair tie resembles a knotted ribbon instead of your standard elastic band so you can wear it around your wrist for a boho bracelet look until it's time to put your hair up.

With so many to choose from, the most difficult decision you will have to make when it comes to Emi-Jay hair accessories will be your desired color collection.  At the moment, I'm stuck on the Military Collection and the Rainbow Glitter Collection.  Looks like my two little black elastic bands are getting an upgrade--all thanks to my lovely friend, Annie.

I Am Thankful For My Fashionista Friends, Episode 2: Why Palmer's Is the Best. Thing. Ever.

I am a lip gloss junkie.  On any given day, there are at least three--if not more--tubes of lip product in my purse.  Today, the zip pocket of my Burberry tote includes a Palmer's Cocoa Butter Swivel Stick, Smith's Rosebud Salve, MAC's Cremesheen Glass in Boy Bait, and Fresh's Sugar Plum.  With these four options, I have my bases completely covered, as far as moisturizing, conditioning, and color go--but if I were stranded on a deserted island and could only take one with me, it's a total no-brainer: my Palmer's Swivel Stick would win every time.

Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Swivel Stick, $3.79
Available at Walgreen's

I am thankful to my lovely friend, India, for sharing this vital beauty secret with me (well, that and about a million other reasons).  Palmer's is nothing fancy.  You can find it in the same aisle as the body wash and lotion at just about any drugstore, and the packaging is just about as simple as it gets too.  But don't be fooled; what Palmer's lacks in frills, it makes up for in pure amazingness.  The cocoa butter formula contained in the swivel stick that so closely resembles a glue stick (other people will remind you of this fact, should you apply your Palmer's in public) is the best thing you could possibly do for your lips.  Your pretty pout will be shiny and moisturized almost instantly.

My beloved state of Massachusetts is a little confused about when exactly winter is supposed to start--what with snow in October and all--but since the official start of winter isn't that far off, chapped lips are a definite concern for many a fashionista.  Not to worry, Palmer's has got you covered.  While this swivel stick is actually intended for general "marks, blemishes, and rough, dry skin" (hence it's glue stick size?), I would suggest keeping your swivel stick reserved for your kisser.  But if you're in need of general moisturizing, I would look to a bottle of lotion instead (of course, Palmer's has you covered there too.)

As much as I love all my fancy beauty products, Palmer's is basically the best thing ever.  I should know; I've tested the waters, and I will be eternally thankful to my darling India--and Palmer's--for keeping my pout pretty.
